Spanish booksellers strike

INFORMATION Over *ONE MILLION BOOKS REMOVED* from Internet We have been informed that the majority of Spanish dealers in rare, old and used books have decided to remove their books for one week from www.iberlibro.com and www.abebooks.com, after this Canada based multinational announced a rise in costs. According to the dealers this measure will oblige them to pass on the rise to their customers, effectively making their books more expensive. During this week, the bookdealers will be taking a series of measures to offer the cheapest and most efficient possible service to their customers. It is intended to concentrate the disruption and distortion of the market, that is bound to arise, to the shortest period possible. The immediate effect for internet users is that over 1.200.000 books will *no longer be available* from *28th April to 4th May* on *www.iberlibro.com* or *www.abebooks.com* However, in order to keep their friends and customers fully informed, they have confirmed that the stock of all the book shops involved, and many more, will still be available on the following sites: [Uniliber.com=>http://www.uniliber.com] 220 book shops, mainly Spanish. 2.740.000 books, mainly Spanish. About Antiqbook

Antiqbook started its services in April 1996. At first it was meant to be a platform for Dutch book dealers, but it was soon discovered by booksellers from abroad. Admission is restricted to independent professional booksellers. Antiqbook has gradually but consistently grown to its present size of 8 million books from 850 booksellers world-wide. Over the years one of Antiqbook's strong points has been a simple and straightforward service to both book dealers and book buyers. A prospective customer is put directly in touch with the bookseller of his choice, who then processes the order in his own preferred way. Booksellers have a choice between paying a commission to Antiqbook or a fixed monthly fee. Antiqbook is privately owned. Piet Wesselman, who started as an online antiquarian bookseller in 1993, is president and general manager.

Marelibri and Umberto Eco

+The Marelibri Award given to Umberto Eco during the 30th anniversary of the ESOPO Marelibri.com, one of the most important European website for antique books, has decided to award the title of Honorary Bookseller 2008 to Umberto Eco, passionate bibliophile and creator of Giambattista Bodoni, the antiquarian bookseller of "The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana" published by Harcourt, 2005. We created this award to honor those persons who through their passion, culture and knowledge of the world of books have become our ideal booksellers. The Award ceremony was held Saturday March 8th at the Hotel de la Ville, via Hoepli 6, Milan, Italy, at 11 am. About Prolibri

After long theorical discussions about our aims and visions a bunch of freedom and independence loving antiquarian booksellers with online activities decided months later at the beginning of the 21st century to create a cooperative of antiquarian booksellers, the so called GIAQ (Genossenschaft der Internetantiquare : Cooperative of the antiquarian online booksellers) which should run and own a proper platform (www.prolibri.de) offering our items. Due to our IT-mastermind Thomas Benedix we are now offering one of the best german databases and, though regarded sceptically - not only by our colleagues - but also by some of our dealers, we are very fit for the market as a democraticly ruled and commonly owned enterprise. How quick we are was proven in the last months (June 2007 to january 2008) as we decided to cooperate with our european friends and helped in forming the structures and the creating of a database, which seems to be, now mainly due to the french team, one of the best in Europe; all this within less than 6 months. Why do we talk about structures, visions and organisations ? Technics and so on and not about customers, as there are two kind of: first of all, you, the booklover and hunter of long searched book without whom we would have nothing to do and, the second kind of our customers, the free and independend online antiquarian bookseller, mostly a very individualized and sometimes freaky human beeing, surrounded by tons of books described for and waiting for you to come and see and order. In a certain sense we created prolibri and recently marelibri to give them, all of us, our faces back, lost in the anonymity of online trade run nowadays by the big business. We are very happy that you found this site and had been so curious to read about us, who we are and what we want, thank you. About Uniliber

Uniliber was born on the 26th of October 2006. It's a non-profit-making association, all professionals of old and modern books may join, and as soon as they're in, they have the same rights and responsabilities as the other members. On a market full of sites dedicated to the purchase of old books, Uniliber appears with a new particularity, the fact that all members are the owners of the site and therefore may decide for their future by themselves. With this particualrity the site became in a short period of time one of the sites offering the most inetresting books for the hispanic world The association is managed by a group of volunteers, regularly renewed, elected during a general assembly by the association's members. Another of our particularities is that all the universitarian and/or academic organisations from any country that publish a book in one of the official language of Spain or simply about Spain, are invited to promote their book freely on Uniliber. About Livre Rare Book

The "Librairie du Bât d'Argent" was founded in 1936 at "rue du Bât d'Argent" (Silver Pack-saddle street), n°3, in mister Nourry's old bookshop that used to be called "Aux 500 000 bouquins" (the 500 000 books). This place had been a bookshop since 1907, before, it was a hatter's shop... After years of selling new books, renting books, organizing conferences (in the shop's basement), we decided to make catalogues and lists of books in the sixties. First they were made with a roneo and alcohol stencils, then they were printed, then came offsets, photocopies, I've tried everything to make catalogues till 1992 when the Rank Xerox daisy wheel died and I bought a computer with a small ink printer (Magic, compared to offset!)... That's when I discovered the joys of computing... and the internet! When I understood what it was, I started building a site for my bookshop, then an electronic directory of booksellers, finally opened the doors of the site to other colleagues : livre-rare-book.com was born! It was 1995. Since then, the site has grown with the internet. The internet is a great wave which has been pushing around traditions and cliches for the last fifteen years. In this adventure, we learn everyday, we meet new ideas, we adapt to new techniques and we have never ending surprises... The building of Marelibri fits naturally in line with this work. About Maremagnum

In 1940 Libreria Malavasi was founded by Paride Malavasi, in Milan, and it's now one of the oldest antiquarian bookshop of the town. Paride Malavasi died in 1975, but the bookshop continued its activity, with his children, Maurizio, Sandra and Sergio: the three brothers and sister created a new site in 1995, Maremagnum.com The name of the site seems rather odd: someone called it Malemagnum (the great evil), someone Maramagnum (a wordplay) and someone Mare Nostrum (the Mediterranean sea). As a matter of fact this name has an historical origin. At the end of the XVIIth century, two brothers, Francesco and Alessandro Marucelli, founded the "Biblioteca Marucelliana", a public library still existing in Florence, and tried to realize a universal bibliography, called Mare Magnum: the work consisted of 111 in-folio volumes, which unfortunately were never published. The name Mare Magnum remained in the Italian language, as an example of a caotic work, big like the sea, while Mare Magnum wanted to be a "Mare" (an ocean) of bibliographical information, compiled to help scientist and scholars from all over the word. It's in the same spirit as the Marucelli brothers, that the Libreria Malavasi wanted to offer a site cataloguing all books from all over the world, starting from incunabula up to now. The association has been created by five European sites, all dedicated to antiquarian and modern books, in order to realise a set of common initiatives. In the near future, the association will expand its activities beyond those purely of www.marelibri.com, to include participating in and organising fairs, exhibitions, conferences, debates, and books presentations. We will also be glad to answer your questions about antique books and more. Our association is characterised by three principal features : - 1 - Each of the founding sites is prominent in its own country (the Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany, Spain). While retaining the distinct character of each participating site, we think European cooperation is necessary for further improving the online services for booksellers and book lovers. Hence, we have combined our efforts to offer the best services to today's internet users. In addition, we're planning to expand the number of participant sites. - 2 - All participating sites of /marelibri.com/ are either associations of booksellers or are privately owned by booksellers.
