MANNERS, LORD JOHN.

El Casamiento Espanol / Del Siglio 19. Por Lord John Manners, Miembro Del Parlamento Ingles.

London: Printed by James Steward, 117, Drury Lane, 1846. - Octavo, softcover. The contents have been rebound in 19th century tan wraps with the title handwritten in ink on the front wrap. The wraps are lightly bumped & creased. Half-title & 22 pages. There is some very light creasing to the top & bottom margins of the pages. Very good. The author of this pamphlet was Lord John James Robert Manners, seventh Duke of Rutland, [1818-1906]. On completing his education, Lord Manners traveled with his brother to France, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. In Spain he visited Don Carlos whose claim to the Spanish throne ignited the Carlist Wars. When Ferdinand VII of Spain died in 1833, his wife became Queen Regent for their infant daughter Isabella [1830-1904]. Carlos, brother of Ferdinand and uncle to Isabella, laid claim to the throne as the nearest male heir. In 1846, Isabella chose to marry her Bourbon cousin, Francisco de Asis, Duke of Cadiz, who became king consort. Manners, writing before the marriage, makes an impassioned plea for the rights of the son of Don Carlos. "...We will leave it to our readers to say whether, with a heart so generous, a mind so well stored, a youth of such undeserved misfortune, and a spirit so gallant, the influence of the fair-play-loving English nation should be used to keep the Prince of the Asturias from the throne to which he was born..." He calls for a marriage between Carlos Luis and Isabella: "The Prince of Asturias [Carlos Luis] will enter Madrid as the husband of Isabella, and the restorer of the greatness and glory of Spain, with the approbation, applause and gratulation of the Parliament and people of England".The text of this pamphlet originally appeared in English in the Oxford and Cambridge Review for 1845. Its caption title was "Spanish match of the 19th century" and it was published anonymously. Manners used as background for it two works: Legal order and constitutional rights by Viscount T. H. J. Ranelagh and Prince of the Asturias by F. F. Ivers. The publication at hand has no translator mentioned and may well have been written in Spanish by Manners himself. This apparently is the first and only separate edition of the material, no doubt written in Spanish for the benefit of Manners' Spanish friends.Rare. No copies were located on KUK or WorldCat.

[RUSSELL, Lord John, 1st Earl Russell].

The Nun Of Arrouca : a tale.

First Edition, modern quarter morocco lettered in gilt, brown cloth sides. Sm.8vo, pp[2] half-title + [2] title + 87, couple of neat booklabels on endpaper, an excellent copy. Rare early novel by the youthful Lord John Russell, later grandfather to the philosopher Bertrand Russell. A radical liberal, Lord John Russell twice headed the British government as a major reforming Prime Minister. In his youth he had several times visited Portugal, where he met Wellington; and had also travelled to Elba to meet Napoleon. In this late-Gothic romantic novella Edward Pembroke, a young English officer serving in the Peninsular War, is wounded while heroically rescuing the nuns of a Portuguese convent from the inevitable depredations of a French squadron. He is nursed to health by one of the nuns, Catherine. They fall passionately in love : she determines to forsake her orders : divine punishment is, naturally enough, meted out when she rapidly succumbs to consumption. According to Summers : Gothic Bibliography : 'Very shortly after publication, the author determinedly suppressed the book, buying up every copy at whatsoever price and destroying it'. See also Block : English Novel. No copy listed in Cambridge University Library, Bodleian Library, or the National Union Catalogue.

SOMERS, LORD JOHN

The Security of English-MenS Lives, Or the Trust, Power and Duty of the Grand Jurys of England. Explained According to the Fundamentals of the English Government, and the Declarations of the Same Made in Parliament By Many Statutes

London, Benj. Alsop, 1682. Full-Leather , 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. The Security of English-Men's Lives, Or the Trust, Power and Duty of the Grand Jurys of England. Explained according to the Fundamentals of the English Government, and the Declarations of the same made in Parliament by many Statutes; Somers, Lord John; London,  Printed for Benj. Alsop at the Sign of the Angel and Bible over against the Poultry Counter. 1682. 16mo, 168pp, full leather. Contemporary bindings in poor condition, corners rubbed and bumped, leather rubbed at board margins and spine, chips at bottom board edges and spine ends. Inner hinges split and boards holding by cords front and rear endpapers and prelims missing (book opens onto title page). Internally, some browning to margins of front and rear pages, otherwise reasonably clean. Small worm hole through book at lower margin, well away from text area. Text block intact with no loose pages, only pulling at gutters at a few places. This influential book, first printed in 1681, defined a hearing before a grand jury of peers as a fundamental English right. An assertion of the priority of the law over the English crown, it was written to support the right of a grand jury to reject the bill of indictment against Anthony Ashley-Cooper, First Earl of Shaftesbury, issued by Charles II. Somers, a barrister of the Middle Temple and an important Whig statesman, was Lord Chancellor of England during the reigns of William and Mary and Queen Anne. He presided over the framing of the Bill of Rights (1689). This is the second of the two 17th century editions.  A very important work and extremely rare in this early edition, only several copies are known still to be in circulation .
