Princeton, Princeton University Press, 1959; . Princeton, Princeton University Press, 1959; in 8, 1 frontispice, 13pp., 286pp., fig. dans le texte, cart. édit. Edition originale. Doctor W. Penfield has been Director of the Montreal Neurological Institute since its founding in 1934 and was Chairman of the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery of McGill University. He has previously published six books on various phases of neurology, neurosurgery and neurophysiology . Dr. Lamar Roberts was Chief of Neurosurgery at the University of Florida Medical School. He was awarded the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees at McGill University for his graduate studies on speech defects and neurological localization . This book is the outcome of ten years of carefully planned study of the neurological mechanisms of speech. Separate consideration is given to aphasia and other speech disturbances, brain dominance and the evidence for localization in the dominant hemisphere... Through case studies of cortical excision and a new method - mapping the limits of the cortical speech areas by electrical interference - the authors have amassed a remarkable body of evidence, thoroughly documented by case studies, photographs and drawings and a review of the literature. This study, which was presented in part at the Vanuxem Lectures of Princeton University, will appeal to neurologists, physiologists and anatomists - but also, in a much wider field, to psychologists, speech therapists and the teachers of secondary languages (note de l'éditeur).
