New York: P. F. Collier & Son, 1910. Hardcover. Cover is blue with gold stamp design on front, gold lettering on spine. Page tops gilt. Red end papers. Overall pages are clean and tight; some separation at pp 4-5, but still attached. Illustrated with three b/w photogravure pictures. Volume ! Of a 3 volume set. Based on the diaries of the Duke de Saint-Simon, a member of the royal court of Louis XIV, the 'Sun King', from the latter part of his reign, through to his death in 1715 and the early part of the regency of Louis XV. This was written by an insider of the court, over 2800 pages originally, and none of it was published until after the Duke's death; a wise man, he didn't wish to lose his position by having others read his opinions of the goings ons of the high and mighty, including the King and other members of the royal family. This book was originally written over 300 years ago and yet it is still highly readable and entertaining. It is bawdy, insightful, honest, appalled, proud and an unparallelled reference source for the period. The king kept his nobility ensnared around him at Versailles, where they were under his watchful eye and could not foment rebellion or successfully question his authority or edicts. To be exiled from the court was the 'fate worse than death' that virtually no one could contemplate with anything other than horror. In this hothouse atmosphere Louis pulled the strings of all those around him, keeping them on their toes and obsessed with the ridiculous minutiae of court ritual. London: George Allen & Unwin, Ltd. (1926). Eighth printing. Three volumes. Octavo, royal blue cloth, gilt, in dust jackets. 386, 381, 425pp. with general index in volume three. Very good in fair to good jackets. There is offsetting on the endpapers. One volume has a small amount of bubbling of the cloth on the back cover. The jackets have some chipping at the extremities, but volume three's jacket has a 3/4 by 2 inch chip at the head of the spine.

Appears to be an unread set, a very SHARP and handsome collection. Original green/gray cloth binding with paper paste-on title plates to spine, lightly tanned with age while remaining clear and legible. Gilt to topedge of all three volumes. From the Universal Classics Library. Illustrated with photogravures on japan vellum, etchings hand painted india-plate reproductions and full page portraits of authors. Includes the original laid in notice of 'How to Open a Book' designed specifically for these deliberately rough cut pages. Other than very mild shelfwear to top and bottom of cloth spine, these volumes are clean and crisp. A nice set for the collector to placeon display. Very Good +.
