FIRST EDITION Bound in the publishers red paper covered boards with black title lettering. This is the scarce first impression of the first edition of Alison Uttley's rare first book. Pictoral colour illustration onlaid to front board remains intact with no fading. Double matching green illustrated endpapers to front and rear of book. All pages are present and correct and in presentable condition. Fine Margaret Tempest artwork throughout which blends so wonderfully with the original storytelling of Alison Uttley. Paper covering to spine is missing but book still remains solidly bound. Light discolouration patches to rear board. Overall a very presentable copy which would benefit from a little tender loving care to restore it to its undoubted former glory. Photographs of the book are available on request. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall FIRST EDITION This is the first impression of the first edition of what is perhaps one of the most elusive of all of Alison Uttley's childrens books. Bound in the publishers grey paper covered boards with Margaret Tempest colour illustration to front board. Light rubbing and wear to the boards in all the usual places but nontheless this remains a very good, honest copy. Previous owners inscription to the blank side of the front fly leaf. Double matching blue and white illustrated endpapers to front and rear of book. The beautiful colour illustrations by Margaret Tempest have retained all their freshness and vibrancy despite the books 66 years of age. Photographs of the book are available on request. Loosely laid is a short note from Uttley on her headed paper which reads, "Dear Peter, Pens will not write so excuse this note. I hope you will like the stories. Alison." Somewhat above-average wear externally. We presume backstrip is missing as prior owner has neatly covered spine with masking tape which, most fortuitously, is unobtrusive in appearance. Few minor pencil marks mostly erased from endpapers. Several minor perforations to front free endpaper and first blank leaf, as if by a kitten's tiny claws. One inch chip from lower corner of page 19. Half-inch tear to top edge of page 56. Two small chips from lower corner of page 107. Two-inch tear to lower fore-edge of back free endpaper.
