Sm. 8vo. Orig. boards. (18, 34 blank) lvs., written in ink, in a readable schoolish hand. Travel journal by a young person, nicely written in a readable school-hand, presenting a day by day account of a summer holiday trip from The Hague to Cleves, by way of Utrecht and Gelderland, and back again, undertaken with the parents in the summer of 1838. The first entry dates from Friday July 27, 1838, and the last from Monday, September 3, 1838. The diary was probably kept to oblige the parents since all entries are rather short, and except for the main data of the trip the child seems not have found much to tell. In Cleves is noted: 'went with Papa to walk in the mountains'. Fine copy. Bookseller reference : 4960 |

(MAPS FOR A GEOGRAPHICAL GRAMMAR). EDINBURGH, FOR ALEXANDER KINCAID, 1790). Modern half grey calf, with old title-label mounted on spine. With 33 folding engraved maps, by McIntyre, T. Conder, and some by J. Fraser after A. Kincaid. 1 leaf with manuscript index. Atlas, consisting of a collection of maps, taken from a "Geographical Grammar" published at Edinburgh in 1790, as is to be gathered from the vaguely visible offprint of the original text on verso of the first world map. Most maps, more or less, have vague offprints of the lettering of the original text on the facing pages, but it is mostly on the back of the maps. Still, in spite of the removing of the text, the present atlas is an interesting and nice pocket-atlas, and probably complete. It contains maps of the World, the Strait of Magellan, a spherical globe, Ancient Asia, the Roman Empire, the world as known to the Ancients, Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Scotland, England & Wales, Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany & The Netherlands, Poland & Prussia, Spain & Portugal, Italy, European Turkey & Hungary, Ancient Greece, Asia, the travels of Jesus, the East Indies, Hindostan, Africa, Palestine or Holy Land, North America, South America, the West Indies, New Holland or Australia, the Northern Hemisphere, the Southern Hemisphere, and 3 small spheres with their mathematical projections. All maps of the contemporary world are stated to be designed after the latest discoveries, the maps of the hemispheres showing the routes and dates of the latest voyages. Good copy. 'T HUIS KOSTVERLOOREN. (NO PLACE, CA. 1740). 165 x 212 mm. Washed pen and ink drawing (in black and brownish ink) of the house Kostverloren. Original washed pen and ink drawing by a professional eighteenth-century artist, with a view of the manor house 'T Huis Kostverloren' (caption in an eighteenth-century hand at the top of the drawing), also called Ruijschenstein or Brillenburg, situated along the river Amstel just outside Amsterdam. This manor was founded in 1420. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it was a source of inspiration for many artists, including Beerstraten and Rembrandt, who has drawn the house several times. In 1650 the house was severely damaged by fire but it was restored in the '60 of the seventeenth century: the tower was restored and the house pulled down to be rebuilt on lower foundations. In 1822 the house was sold for demolition. Fine drawing.- (Some foxing). Cf. I.H. van Eeghen, Rembrand aan de Amstel (Amsterdam 1969). Bookseller reference : 91MGUB7YLZSD |

(ACROBATS). DEVENTER, J. DE LANGE, (CA. 1830). Catchpenny print. Folio. Large woodcut illustrating various circus acts of acrobats, rather crudely touched with blue and brown colours. Popular catchpenny print of acrobats, including rope-dancers and jugglers, published by J. de Lange Junior, active in Deventer between 1822 and 1849. The print is numbered 37, and the block probably came from the stock of J. de Lange Senior, who had started the firm in about 1750. The print was published by J. de Lange under no. 103 as well, and it was also published with text in the Frisian language. Acrobats and traveling performers with trained animals belonged to the oldest subjects for catchpenny prints, and according to De Meyer, rope-dancers came first. The oldest catchpenny print of a street performance of some dozen rope-dancers was anonymously published in Amsterdam in the early seventeenth century. Good copy. (AMBACHTEN, BEDRIJVEN EN VERMAKEN). SNEEK, F. HOLTKAMP, (CA. 1815). Catchpenny print. Folio. With 20 small woodcuts between black-lined borders, depicting a variety of trades and professions, like a printer, postman, grocer, parson, soldier, sailor, fruit seller, fish woman, etc., also incl. some classical gods, like Bacchus and Ceres, fun at the fair, etc., each woodcut with title underneath and all coloured by thumb with red and yellow. Nice print, but rather crudely coloured, produced by J. Noman in Zaltbommel with the address of one of his retailers, F. Holtkamp in Sneek. Noman had taken over the blocks from W.G. van de Sande & Co. in Amsterdam, where the print was also numbered 19, but where it had bilingual text, Dutch and French. Noman left out the French text as well as the title. The title quoted above is taken from De Meyer's catalogue of W.G. van de Sande & Co. The print is also known with the address of Noman, dated 1815. Good copy.- (Some sl. defects to fold in the middle; sl. frayed at edges). De Meyer p. 61 and Noman cat. 19; cf. (ANIMAL PICTURE BOOK THE NETHERLANDS, CA. 1800). Sm.8vo. Contemp. blind wrappers. With 8 full-page engraved plates of animals, all nicely coloured by hand. (16) pp. Children's picture book with beautiful full-page pictures of animals, all plates accompanied by one leaf of text in verse and in prose. The first plate is titled: "Het Zwyn" (The Pig), with a nice picture of a pig coloured in yellow and brown, standing on yellow and green grass, accompanied by a poem starting with the line: "Gulzig, vuil en traag is 't zwijn" (Greedy, dirty and slow is the pig), and warning the children never to be like one! Further depicted are a bull, a sheep with her lamb, a cow, a goat, and some curious animals, like "De Lemmus en de Getulus", explained to the children as a sort of rabbit and a sort of squirrel, "De Aquaticus en de Philander", a sort of tortoise known to Plinius, and a sort of ape, but both not known to Buffon as stated in the accompanying text, and finally "De Gulzo of Veelvraat", described as a very greedy sort of dog, living in the woods of Germany. All in all a most charming and rather curious picture book, seemingly published as such, without any title or publisher's address. It could have been intended as a children's colouring book, but then our child must have coloured it under guidance with much care. The size is ca. 10 x 16 cm. Good copy of a rare anonymous item. (CARICATURES ON THE NEW EDUCATION ACT OF 1885. NO PLACE, 1885). 16 full-page carricatures printed in sepia, versos blank, on the New Education Act of 1885, signed V. (16 ) lvs. Separate quire with well designed and inventive caricatures on the new Education Act, intended to end the "school-war" which had divided Dutch politics since the beginning of obligatory primary education. The law now treated schools of all religious communities on equal footing as the public schools; but it did not however, end the war, as the struggle went on, now for equal subsidization by the Government. The artist probably was Alexander Ver Huell (1822-1897), a popular cartonist at the time. He studied in Leyden and became famous for his caricatures on students' life, which he published under the pseudonym O. Veralby. Later he lived in Arnhem. (HERBAL). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER. (NETHERLANDS), 1878-1879. Folio. Contemp. half cloth portfolio. With 43 separate lvs. with pen drawings of herbs, plants and flowers of the field, all nicely watercoloured, with title, date and signature "v.d. A." added in manuscript, 3 similar drawings in pencil, also watercoloured, double-page watercolour of grasses, unsigned, 4 smaller field sketches in pencil, and 2 pen drawings in brown ink, one showing a cross-section of a live sponge, and the other a small and charming caricature of a gentleman in city clothes smelling a flower and standing between animated plants and flowers. Rare collection of a very neatly executed manuscript herbal, with all the plants very carefully, finely and most accurately drawn and coloured by hand. The herbs are often accompanied by small plant details and all have some manuscript explanatory text, and are signed and dated with the initials "v.d. A." This was probably a gentleman from Zeeland, because one plate mentions: "naar een ex. uit het bosch bij Domburg" (after a specimen found in the woods near Domburg). Only one of the drawings is dated 1893, all others 1878 or 1879, often including also the month in which the herb was found. The names of the plants are added in Latin and other observations added in Dutch. The handwriting is in brown ink, clear and well readable. Size per leaf unfolded 134x 79 cm. Preserved in a slipcase. Manuscript on two folded leaves of vellum with attached printed document filled out in manuscript, with blindstamepd paper seal attached. Very interesting document for the history of Jamaica. It is the will of Joseph Barnes (d. 6 May 1829 at Kingston, Jamaica), who had property in Cumberland Pen on Jamaica. As executors of the will are mentioned: Joseph's brother Thomas Barnes to whom a part of the property in Cumberland Pen had descended (with John Sutton Williams as his attorney) and Barthlomew Ibbott Williams residing at Jamaica, and Alexander Evans and John Lynch at London. The will was registered and officially endorsed in London on 9 November 1831 in the name and with the seals of William the Archbishop of Canterbury. The will lists as Joseph Barnes's heirs among others Bettey Stalker (widow of William Stalker and sister of Joseph Barnes) and Joseph's 'dearly beloved daughter' Charlotte Hannah Barnes. It is the latter who inherits another part of her father's property on Jamaica: '... all that land ... which is situated to the northward and eastward of the house in which I now reside situated on the Rock Ffort or Great Wind Road in the parish of Kingston with the appurtenances thereunto'. Another part of his property was 'in the parish of Saint Catharina in the County of Middlesex and island of Jamaica commonly called and known by the name of Cumberland Penn together with all and every negro and other slaves thereunto belonging ...'.
