The Boston Society was organized to promote the study of the history of Boston and the preservation of its antiquities. This book is an exact facsimile of the original manuscript, published without a title page, and any other information to identify this book. The manuscript was given to the Society by E. Channing Stowell of Malboro, New Hamphire in 1924. This manuscript is the accounts of the Vigilance Committee of Boston who ran the Underground Railroad over the period of Oct. 1850 to Jan.1861. This account is a fascinating record of the activities of the Vigilance Committee. For example on Dec. 12, 1850, 200 handbills were printed (for $5.00) "warning fugitives of the people against Slave Hunters" On Feb. 18, - March 6, 1851, mentioned are the passages of several slave fugitives, to various locations such as Canada, England, and Plymouth Ma. The cost of legal fees, food, and clothes are also noted. One explanatory note for Feb.15th 1851, notes the following. "Shadrach a fugitive Slave from Virginia was arrested at the instance of John Caphart, a Slave hunter from Norfolk, via, and taken before Commission Curtis, who after the adjournment of the first examination, was rescued from the Suffolk Court house, by the colored people, & sent to Canada. For this brave act, Lewis Hayden, Robert Morris, James Scott & Elvin Wright, were arrested & tried before Judge Sprague of U.S. Court, & were all acquitted; the expanses of these trials, are herewith recorded, & were defrayed by donations & contributions, entered on the opposite pages of this book."
