Album of Prints (Grand Tour 1820) Early Lithography. 1820. Signed by C. A. Putnam. A young man named Charles Andrew Putnam, from a prominent Boston family of physicians and scholars made the "Grand Tour" of Europe in 1819-1820. He later became a doctor and shared a prominent practice in Boston with his father. Wealthy young American men and women often went this fashionable route, before settling down to marriage. Along the way he purchased prints showing the famous places which he had visited. The majority of these (36) are done in the then new media of lithography. They are double-tinted in sepia and blue and the size and weight of a postcard, approximately 4 x 6". The next group (19) are steel-engraved and 4 x 5". Many of these are signed and dated. Finally he included a set of 5 hand-colored small, 6 x 4" prints of English birds with descriptions on the reverse. All of these, he placed in a scrapbook by making slits in the book's pages and fitting the prints in. Happily he did not use a bit of paste. The prints are in fine condition. The album itself is missing one of the boards and the other board is loose. He wrote the name of the city depicted in his fine hand on the front of each of the lithographed prints. He visited England, France, Ireland and Scotland. Bookseller reference : PHBOOKSAL69149 |
