2 works bound together - [4], 111pp + [6], 146pp. Quarter morocco and cloth, title in gilt to spine. Very minor wear to extremities, spine very slightly faded. Internally some browning to endpapers, title and half-title lightly water-stained to fore-edge, the second work is lightly waterstained to fore-edge, some light browning. Includes a map and a key to the map in the 'Information' part. Scarce, no copy with same pagination located on estc (the Information for Mungo Campbell seemingly only calls for 76pp). "What is known is that when, on 24 October 1769, Eglinton saw Campbell on Ardrossan beach with a musket, he had already warned him against carrying weapons on his land. The earl rode up with some servants and challenged Mungo to hand over his piece, chiding him in the process for suspected poaching. Campbell refused absolutely, and backed away from the earl, who continued to demand the weapon while also calling for his own musket to be brought to him. As the stand-off continued Campbell stumbled over a rock and discharged his weapon as he fell. The ball struck the earl in the stomach, inflicting what he himself immediately recognized as a fatal wound. Having been taken back by carriage to Eglinton Castle the earl died of his wounds in the early hours of 25 October. Campbell himself was found guilty of murder at the high court of justiciary in Edinburgh on 27 February 1770, but escaped execution by hanging himself in his cell on the night of 1 March" (Oxford DNB) Bookseller reference : 15025 |
