‎AMERICAN FIRE MARKS‎

‎Insurance Company of North America paperback Philadelphia: . First edition. Soft cover. Very good. Octavo 9 x 6! printed card wraps centered by a reproduction of a 1792 America fire mark. Frontispiece initial letter and three in-text illustrations. Other illustrations throughout depicting fire marks from the collection. The latter consists of one hundred and seventeen fire marks each with a full-page photographic image and accompanying description. 133 pp. A portion of lower spine missing and light soil marks to cover; interior mark-free and clean. The !Fire Mark! was a means for firemen to identify !insured! from !uninsured! dwellings and thus establish at a glance whether or not the Fire Brigade was required to provide their services. This somewhat awkward situation arose as a result of the fire brigades being funded and operated by insurance firms. With the advent of public and volunteer fire companies however the use of fire marks diminished greatly. Today they are extremely rare and desirable with very few remaining in private hands.‎

‎CROMWELL’S SOLDIER’S CATECHISM. WRITTEN FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT AND INSTRUCTION ALL THAT HAVE TAKEN UP ARMS ESPECIALLY THE COMMON SOLDIERS‎

‎Elliot Stock hardcover London: . First edition thus. Full-leather. Near fine. Facsimiled from one of the only two copies known to exist. With a short Preface by its Possessor Walter Begley. 12mo 7.75 x 5.125" suede with original wrappers preserved. x 28 pp. Scattered foxing to text block; wrappers chipped and browned. Ex libris J. Warren Maclay Field Director of the American Red Cross; Ex libris Walter Begley with his bookplate. A rare piece of ephemera as this was Begley's personal copy. There is no record of the number of copies Begley had printed up but we assume a modest number. The fact that this copy is from the library of the person who published a facsimile after one of the two known pieces still extant in suggests just how very rare this little bit of ephemera remains today. The Soldier!s Catechism emerged during the English Civil Wars as part of the !New Model Army! the most famous of the Parliamentarian Armies. In addition to being an army of expertly trained soldiers led by trained military commanders the soldiers of the Cromwellian Army retained its reputation as one of the most virtuous armies ever to take the field of battle due largely to their Puritan religious zeal. The New Model Army was stood up on February 15 1645 from the existing !Roundhead! forces.! --Michael E. Cannon Jr. --Includes the above descriptive bibliography with accompanying color photograph laser printed on Southworth parchment neatly folded and laid in.‎

‎INSECTS DID IT 1ST‎

‎Ye Galleon Press paperback Fairfield WA: . First edition. Soft cover. Very good. Signed. Royal octavo 8vo 10 x 7 inches bound in stiff yellow wraps illustrated in green. 4 vii i 160 1 pp. with references and index. Illustrated with insect caricatures by E. Paul Catts as well as black and white detailed photographs of insects including electron scanning microscope views. Signed by E. Paul Catts on the title page "To ___ with best regards -- enjoy-please / Paul Catts." "Organized into 81 chapters each concerns a different achievement in which insects have precedence over other animals including humans. Each chapter includes references to books and scientific papers in which the achievement or behavior is described. In most instances several different insects are used as examples to illustrate the variety and extent of the 'first'. Each chapter is illustrated with a cartoon and in many cases a photograph. When appropriate the Order and Family of the insect are included in the text. Family names can be easily recognized because they always end in -idae. A complete list of the insect orders can be found on page 140. Several topics in this book deal with sexual or other topics that some people might find sensitive especially in regard to younger grade school children. With this in mind we placed those chapters at the end of the book so they can easily be excluded if this is deemed appropriate." --From the Preface. --Includes the above descriptive bibliography with accompanying color photograph laser printed on Southworth parchment neatly folded and laid in.‎
