Where The Wall Ends: Recollections Of A Tyneside Town Wallsend Arts Centre paperback . Softback. Printed card wraps with edges bumped and slight discolouration. Internally the text block is generally clean and tidy. . What gives Wallsend a place in history is far more than its situation at the end of the Roman Wall as I soon discovered when I met Alf Senior of the Local History Society. He showed me his writings on Wallsend ! Willington Quay ! Howdon gathered over many years and talked of his desire to publish an historical record of the borough a link between generations during which so much has changed. In my capacity as community arts worker at the Walisend Arts Centre I was able to offer assistance with such a project. Thus our meeting provided the basis and the spark of enthusiasm for the book that has emerged. Other members of the Local History Society came forward with their recollections of this borough !s past and as word of the project spread additional contributions were received from other local residents. What has evolved is a collection of prose poetry photographs and drawings that form a social history by the people who have lived it. Here are memories of growing up at the turn of the century when Walisend was still a village; of family life and entertainment for a generation that withstood repeated economic difficulties and war; of working in the shipyards collieries and elsewhere or of providing homes for the men who followed these trades; of adjusting to all forms of !ptogress!. Most of these recollections took the form of tape-recorded interviews which I transcribed slightly abbreviated and re organized for clarity and over-all cohesiveness and then showed to the contributors to check and amend as they wished. In all instances I have endeavoured to remain fcithful to each person ~s style and focus of concern. Any errors of !fact! have been left because memory and interpretation are herein considered as real and substantial as the actual events. The Personal Recollections of General Edward Porter Alexander. Fighting for the Confederacy is one of the richest personal accounts in all of the vast literature on the war. Alexander a native of Georgia and a West Point graduate who rose to the rank of brigadier general was involved in nearly all of the great battles of the East from First Manassas through Appomattox. His duties as an engineer artillerist and staff officer brought him into frequent contact with most of the high command of the Army of Northern Virginia including Robert E. Lee Stonewall Jackson and James Longstreet. His narrative is replete with superb insignts into the campaigns in which he participated and is filled with utterly candid appraisals of leaders on both sides. Completed several years before his classic Military Memoirs of a Confederate and intended only for his family and closest friends the 1200 page manuscript lay virtually unknown for eight decades until Gary Gallagher succeed in indentifying the various segments of the manuscript disentagling them from other of Alexanders papers and reconstructing the recollections in their original form. There is a very candid review of the work in the Dictionary of National Biography which states that "In spite of the strongest remonstrances from Poole and Gillman vanity and self-righteousness together induced Cottle in his 'Early Recollections chiefly relating to Samuel Taylor Coleridge' not only to enumerate all his own little generosities to Coleridge and Southey but to enter into the painful details of Coleridge's opium infatuation printing his own letters and the answers. The unworthiness of such conduct is even aggravated by an attempt to represent it as the fulfilment of an injunction of Coleridge's own wrung from him by the extremity of mental and bodily anguish. Cottle erred from sheer obtuseness and want of moral delicacy and hurt himself much more than Coleridge whose failings would have become sufficiently known from other sources while even Cottle's poems would have given a very inadequate idea of his stupidity without his memoirs. 'The confusion in Cottle's "Recollections" is greater than any one would think possible' says Southey. It may be added that the book is very inaccurate in its dates and that the documents quoted are seriously garbled. Reprehensible and in some parts absurd it is however by no means dull and besides its curious and valuable particulars of the early literary career of Coleridge and Southey has notices of other interesting persons otherwise little known such as Robert Lovell and William Gilbert."
