‎[Blaeu Joannes)‎

‎Bercheria Vernacule Barkshire - a Map of Berkshire‎

‎Blaeu unknown Amsterdam: . An excellent example measuring 23.5x19.5 to the extreme borders. Good wide margins measure 2 inches. These are clean and tidy with no signs of cuts nicks or tears to the edges. Slight angle to the top and bottom edges suggests that they may have been cropped but this does not affect the image at all. The map was once mounted to stubs and has a verticle centre fold line and Spanish text plus page numbers to the reverse. Nonetheless it is a very good copy neat and tidy. Upper portion of image taken up by title cartouche to the top centre showing title in Latin and vernacular English between two Royal officials. To the right and left of this ar two different Royal Coats of Arms. The county borders are lightly colourd in green and blue and the cartouche plus the arms are hand coloured in red yellow green purple blue with occasional gilt highlights. This is a very aesthetically pleasing map. As was the custom only Berkshire has its geographical features included with surrounding counties identified with black ink titles in Latin and English only. The lower right corner shows a hand coloured illustration of the map maker with cartograpghical instruments. No author or date is given for this map but it probably comes from the Dutch cartographer Willem who published his "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" or "Novus Atlas" and included a separate volume for England and Wales. The first edition of this was 1648 and it was updated and revised by his sons several times after his death. The maps are well known for ornate cartouches and coats of arms the use of gilt decorations as well as high quality papers. We can send images of thsi excellent map on request. . Very Good/No Jacket. 23.5x19.5 Inches.‎
