Edition originale des deux chefs-d'ooeuvre de Diderot placés en tête de l'ouvrage : Les Deux amis de Bourbonne et l'Entretien d'un père avec ses enfants. Le faux-titre porte Contes Moraux de Mr. D... Premier tirage des illustrations de Gessner (11 figures, 3 en-têtes et 12 culs-de-lampe dessinés et gravés à l'eau-forte par Salomon Gessner lui-même). S'étonnant du mélange des contes réalistes de Diderot avec les fades idylles de Gessner, l'abbé de Vauxcelles s'exclamait : Ce sont des satyres parmi des nymphes. Les deux contes de Diderot furent écrits après le voyage qu'il entreprit à Bourbonne et Langres en 1770. Le conte des Deux amis serait de Mme de Prunevaux, réécrit par Diderot. Exemplaire contenant (ignoré de Tchemerzine et d'Adams) un feuillet intitulé : Ad Salomon Gessnerum... Gessner himself was responsible for the illustrations, the ornaments and the printing. In this German version he included the pastoral play "Evander und Alcimna" and the poem "An den Wasserfall" which the French "Oeuvres" of 1777 did not contain; on the other hand, he omitted the "Contes" of Diderot which the French edition offered. Housed in a marbled board slipcase.Salomon Gessner (1730-1788) Âa booksellerÂs son, was apprenticed to the bookseller Spener in Berlin. Giving up this employment, he lived for a time by painting and engraving In 1750 he settled in Zurich, continuing to live by painting, including painting on porcelain. He began to write idylls in poetic prose, beginning with Daphnis (1754). His Idyllen (1756) achieved a nation-wide success. In Der Tod Abels (1758) he attempted an epic in prose In his idylls, Gessner, who is indebted to Theocritus and Virgil, creates an idealized, orderly, almost horticultural state of nature, from which everything rough and craggy has been eliminated; his shepherds are similarly untouched by the ruder aspects of country life. His work embodies the city-dwellerÂs longing for a nature which he does not know, and this explains its instant popularity (The Oxford Companion to German Literature).Nicolas-André Monsiau (1754-1837) Âwas a Parisian who attained some reputation as a painter of both classical and modern subjects. HUSER ) A LYON, CHEZ AMABLE LE ROY, LIBRAIRE M.DCC.LXXXIII ( 1783 ) "rare édition lyonnaise qui est contemporaine de son auteur vaut le détour tant pour les textes et l'agréable traduction par Huber que pour la beauté naïve et bucolique des 11 planches ( non signées ), relié ( reliure pleine basane de couleur fauve ), au format in f° 12 ( 80 x 140 ), complet 3/3 volumes, dos lisse joliment décoré de roulettes dorées, pièces de titre et de tomaison en maroquin vert olive avec lettres dorées, tranches mouchetées et gardes jaspées, signet rouge, ouvrages de respectivement XX ( préface ) + 231pp + 1 table, puis 255pp + 1 table et 307pp + 3 de table imprimées sur papier vergé clair et de qualité ; Commentaires : Salomon Gessner est un peintre et un poéte suisse d'expression allemande, membre du Cercle des disciples de Bodmer, il publia dans leur revue Criton ses premiers poèmes, en 1751, puis en 1754 Daphnis, enfin, en 1756, la première série des Idylles qui devait lui assurer une grande renommée. Il se lia d'amitié avec Geller, Ewald von Kleist, Wieland ( qui plus tard devint le beau-père de sa fille ) et Bodmer qui l'encouragea à écrire le poème La Mort d'Abel. Contemporary scored calf, spine richly gilt, with red morocco title-label, lettered in gold, ornamental gilt borders on sides, gilt inner dentelles and binding edges, g.e., marbled endpapers. With stipple-engraved colour-printed frontispiece, and 5 stipple-engraved colour printed plates by Colibert, Casenave and Clement after the designs of Nicolas Moniau. 161, (3 blank) pp. First edition of Hubert's prose translation of Gessner's celebrated poem <I>Der Tod Abels</I>, which was first published in German in 1758. Salomon Gessner (1730-1788), known throughout Europe for literary works of pastoral themes and his rococo style, was a bookseller's son, and started his career as an apprentice to the bookseller Spener in Berlin. Giving up this employment, he lived for a time by painting and engraving. In 1750 he settled in Zurich, continuing to live by painting, including painting on porcelain. Later he was also a town councillor and a forestry superintendent who also ran an important publishing house, from which he published his books with his own excellent etchings. He began to write idylls in poetic prose, beginning with <I>Daphnis</I> (1754). His <I>Idyllen</I> (1756-72) achieved a nation-wide success. In <I>Der Tod Abels</I> (1758) he attempted an epic in prose in five 'Chants', becoming soon his most renowned work, and making him the most successful and typical representative of a literary rococo movement. In his idylls, Gessner is indebted to Theocritus and Virgil, creating an idealized, orderly, almost horticultural state of nature. His <I>Tod Adams </I>was reprinted many times and was translated into 20 languages, including Welsh, Latin, and Hebrew. The English translation ran through many editions and was admired by the Romantic writers Sir Walter Scott, Lord Byron, and Wordsworth. The final collection of his works was published at Zuerich in 1841.The beautiful stipple engraved plates are after the drawings by Nicolas Monsiau. They were engraved by Colibert, Casenave, and Clement, and printed in colour in one run through the press. The six plates in this copy are in their first state, before numbers; two have the artist's & engraver's name; 3 have only the engraver's name.Nicolas-Andr Monsiau (1754-1837) was a Parisian who attained some reputation as a painter of both classical and modern subjects. He was elected to the Academy in 1789. Frontis and 4 other color-printed plates with tissue guards. Contemporary marbled calf with gilt floral & leaf borders, turn-ins gilt, a.e.g, marbled endpapers. Rebacked with original spine & morocco lettering pieces. Foxing on H4, otherwise a lovely large-margined copy in later slipcase. The beautiful stipple engraved plates, after drawings by Nicolas Monsiauu, were engraved by Colibert, Casenave, and ClÂment, and printed in color in one run through the press.
