unknown In this fascinating and well researched historial biography Haswell takes on the difficult task of rehabilitating the 'liberal' repution of James II. This task is all the harder given the dominance of the Whig and Marxian historiography of this period of history. Yes Haswell concedes James had become a Catholic but he was also genuine champion of religious tolerance. He argues that James was brought down by the naked ambition of William of Orange and the naked greed and self-interest of the English Whig landed elite. who wished to entrench their own indirect oligrachical rule. Their betrayal Haswell argues undermined fundamentally the basis upon which James' regime relied. The book itself is in pristine condition. DJ spine and covers all excellent. Pages tight clean and unmarked. A really lovely copy of this work. I offer a no questions asked returns and refunds policy on book value if returned within thirty days of delivery.Like New ISBN : 0
