Japan, approximately 1910-20. Leporello of 25 segments with tipped in original photographs on both sides, each of them has an additionally tipped in small manuscript title at the upper right side. Original gold embossed and -titled black laqueur album; square-8vo.(ca. 12 x 18 x 4 cm; photograph-size ca. 10 x 15 cm. A few photographs in their order: 'Cedar Avenue of Nikko', lined with approximately 13.000 cryptomeria trees, known as Sugi, the national tree of Japan. Consisting of three parts converging on the city of Imaichi, the Cedar Avenue of Nikko is some 35 kilometers long and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest tree-lined avenue in the world. The Cedar Avenue of Nikko is the only cultural property designated by the Japanese Government as both a Special Historic Site and a Special Natural Monument. / 'Shinkyo - Sacred - Bridge', which stands at the entrance to Nikko's shrines and temples, and technically belongs to Futarasan Shrine. The bridge is ranked as one of Japan's three finest bridges. It was constructed in 1636 and until 1973 was off limit to the general public. / Torii and pagoda at entrance to Tosho-gu Shrine. / The Bell at Toshogu-shrine / The rotating lantern at Toshogu / The heavily decorated Yomeimon-gate of the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan for over 250 years until 1868. The shrine is dedicated to the spirits of Ieyasu and two other of Japan's most influential historical personalities, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Minamoto Yoritomo. / Many pistures of the lavishly decorated shrine complex which consists of more than a dozen Shinto and Buddhist buildings set in a beautiful forest. Initially a relatively simple mausoleum, Toshogu was enlarged into the spectacular complex seen today by Ieyasu's grandson Iemitsu during the first half of the 17th century. Countless wood carvings and large amounts of gold leaf were used to decorate the buildings in a way not seen elsewhere in Japan, where simplicity has been traditionally stressed in shrine architecture. / The Iemitsu Mausoleum (Taiyuinbyo) of the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu, the grandson of Ieyasu. The Taiyuinbyo resembles the Toshogu in its layout and lavish decorations, but it is intentionally kept more modest than the Toshogu. Like the Toshogu, the Taiyuinbyo combines many Shinto and Buddhist elements. Taiyuinbyo belongs to Rinnoji Temple. / Ryuzu Waterfall 'Ryuzu no taki' (dragon head waterfall). The name comes from the shape of the falls, which resembles the head of a dragon. The waterfall is located on Yukawa River, shortly before the river discharges into Lake Chuzenji. / Kegon Waterfall 'Kegon no taki', an almost 100 meter tall waterfalll. Being the most famous of Nikko's many beautiful waterfalls, it is even ranked as one of Japan's three most beautiful falls; it is the only exit for the waters of Lake Chuzenji. / Lake Chuzenji 'Chuzenjiko', a scenic lake in the mountains above the town of Nikko. It is located at the foot of Mount Nantai, Nikko's sacred volcano, whose eruption blocked the valley below, thereby creating Lake Chuzenji about 20,000 years ago. --- Most pictures are in square-format, the falls in upright-format. The album is in a beautiful condition. Bookseller reference : 453059038 |

Mathurin Henault hardcover Paris: Mathurin Henault, , 1628. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9Ÿ - 12" tall. 4to. [21 x 14.5 cm], (8) ff., 1193, (1) pp., (7) ff., including title printed in red and black. Bound in contemporary French calf, spine in 6 compartments richly gilt, morocco title label. Upper margin of title shaved, brushing the tops of a few letters. Some mild even toning and a handful of leaves with some pale waterstaining, but generally a fresh copy, excellent. Rare first French edition of the earliest written eyewitness account of Japan, by the adventurer, pirate, missionary and mercenary who was among the first Europeans to visit that country. In 1537 Mendes Pinto (1509?-1583) began a 21-year odyssey to the East. Although his reliability has been questioned almost since the original publication of this work in 1614, it is generally considered to offer authentic and valuable information on 16th-c. Asia, and its importance for the development of the European image of Japan is unquestioned: "Certainly no other 17th-century Iberian work on Asia enjoyed a comparable diffusion; and certainly Mendes Pinto may be characterized as 'the Mandeville' of his day" (Lach). It includes perhaps the earliest accounts of pirate battles in Eastern seas, wild beasts in Asia's equatorial forests, and the Dalai Lama.Mendes Pinto gives a detailed and reliable description of Japan, which he visited four times-in fact, he claims to have been with the Portuguese who first made landfall there in 1542 or 1543. He was an ardent admirer of Francis Xavier, to whom he lent money for the building of a church in Yamaguchi, and may have been the founder of the first European settlement near Yokohama in 1548. After Xavier's death in 1552 (which he describes), Mendes Pinto gave up a large fortune to return to Japan as ambassador and missionary, even briefly becoming a member of the Society of Jesus. His fortune came from some rather disreputable sources: helping pirates loot silk, silver and porcelain from Chinese junks, and fighting in China, Tartary, Pegu, India, Ethiopia, Ormuz and points in between. In 1558 Mendes Pinto returned to Portugal, poor, disillusioned, and exhausted by his efforts to obtain some reward for his services. Although he had completed the writing of his Peregrinacam by 1569, it remained unpublished until long after his death. Soon after its first appearance, Lisbon, 1614, it became one of the most popular and widely read travel books ever written, appearing in Spanish, German and English translations as well as French.NUC: LC, New York Public, Hopkins, Cleveland and Boston Public; OCLC adds the Bell. * Laures 260; Cordier Japonica 37; Streit V.115; Lach, Asia in the Making of Europe, III.1.324-25; not in Alt Japan; on the controversy over the author's credibility, see the summary of Boxer in The Christian Century and Japan, pp. 453-33. At sea, near Simoda, Japan: Japan Expedition Press, 1854. unknown Broadside 13 1/2 x 8 inches. Old fold lines. Small tear at edge of fold lightly toned. Near fine. Matted. A broadside printed aboard the U.S. Steam Frigate Mississippi June 28th 1854 establishing regulations for piloting American vessels into the harbor. The broadside lists the fees for piloting in ships of various sizes and is printed in both English and Dutch. The on-board press was used to publish information for the expedition crew as well as to disseminate sailing instructions and other information regarding harbors and coasts to other ships including vessels which were not part of the expedition. It was also used to publish playbills for onboard theatrical productions. All of the material from the Press is quite rare. In 1852 Perry was appointed head of a naval expedition charged with inducing the Japanese government to establish diplomatic relations with the United States. In 1853 the Japanese were finally forced to accept a treaty demanding better treatment of shipwrecked seamen and which allowed American ships to dock at two Japanese ports to purchase fuel and supplies. "The most important result however was that the visit contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the modernization of Japan" - Hill. Only two copies located in OCLC at Harvard and Yale. A rare and interesting piece of Perry Expedition history. OCLC 28030116 54294307. ISBN : 0

Anyway it was sort of a pleasant evening as he left the States in March and brought a lot of the new songs with him. He is a very good piano player and I had a fine time listening to him. One of the songs he played and "Aotried to sing"Ao just like John was "AoPal of Mine"Ao you know how nice it was in comparison to the real singer and this Jew did the same stunt of turning to his wife too as John does to his wife when she sits up in the box. The husband was just a regular N.Y. smart alex Jew." In part: " There isn"Aot much doing as for excitement but just hang around and do nothing. I really think I am gaining weight on the job. I met a fellow here who deals in all sorts of dress goods from Boston and I am getting on the right side of him as he gets all his stuff from here and I may be able to get some things for you people wholesale when you need them. He is one of us you get me being from Boston and a very fine chap. Eleanor will have nothing on me then getting things wholesale. About the only thing we need now wholesale is to get a bank to give us more money on our checks when we cash in. I am thinking of buying a kimono for Connors in the office for his wife as they are married in the Fall. He is a nice fellow and I thought for his trouble in calling up and the like I would bring him back one. I am not sure about it as yet but I think I will."
