A book of plates with descriptions. With forty four steel engravings and about two hundred woodcuts. William Cosmo Monkhouse 1840 1901 was an English poet and critic. Besides many contributions to the Academy the Saturday Review the Magazine of Art and other periodicals he published volumes on The Italian Pre-Raphaelites 1887 The Earlier English Water-Colour Painters 1890 and 1897 In the National Gallery 1895 and British Contemporary Artists 1899. Sir Edwin Henry Landseer 1802 1873 was an English painter well known for his paintings of animals - particularly horses dogs and stags. Landseer's popularity in Victorian Britain was considerable. He was widely regarded as one of the foremost animal painters of his time and reproductions of his works were commonly found in middle-class homes. Yet his appeal crossed class boundaries for Landseer was quite popular with the British aristocracy as well including Queen Victoria who commissioned numerous portraits of her family and pets. Condition: The binding is tight but fragile. The front board endpapers and frontis aredetached and the rear board is attached by the cords only and may detach in the post. There is wear to the extremities including some fading and bumping with some loss. The leather from the spine is no longer present as can be seen in the photograph above.
