Together with the first six tales these twelve stories were collected as the 'Adventures' later in the same year. 'The Speckled Band' is often nominated by Holmes enthusiasts as the finest of all the short stories with 'The Copper Beeches' a close contender. The first six Holmes short stories appeared between July and December 1891:'rarely has a character so quickly established itself on the popular imagination as did Sherlock Holmes in the latter half of 1891'. Green & Gibson. Newnes was insistent on a second series and fortunately contrived to overcome the author's initial reluctance. Accordingly in the December issue Newnes was able to reassure his readers that 'the extraordinary adventures of Sherlock Holmes which have proved so popular with our readers during the past six months will be continued in the new year'. It was the beginning of a relationship that was to last over thirty years and one of the most successful partnerships in the history of fiction. London - George Newnes hardcover A copy of The Strand Magazine Volume IX with stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. Bound in leather with gilt lettering. Including3 storiesfromThe Exploits of Brigadier Gerard by Arthur Conan Doyle. The popular illustrated monthly The Strand Magazine was founded by Sir George Newnes in 1891. It included fiction by writers such as Arthur Conan Doyle H. G. Wells and P. G. Wodehouse. The first issue appeared in January 1891 and the last in March 1950. Newnes idea was for a magazine that had a 'picture on every page' a good mix of fiction and non-fiction and a price that undercut the opposition. Brigadier Gerard perhaps Conan Doyle's most entertaining characterisa Hussar in the French Army during the Napoleonic Wars. His most notable attribute is his vanity - he is utterly convinced that he is the bravest soldier greatest swordsman accomplished horseman and gallant lover in all France. In making his hero a vain and often rather uncomprehending Frenchman Conan Doyle was able to satirise both the stereotypical English view of the French and - by presenting them from Gerard's baffled point of view - English manners and attitudes. Condition: The binding is firm. The hinges are starting. The front board is attached by the cords and the rear board is attached by one cord only and may fail in the post. The spine panel has detached but it is contained with the book. There is wear to the extremities including bumping with loss to the leather. Internally the pages are bright with occasional mild spotting. Overall the condition is good due to the boards with a very good interior. Hardcover. Very Good. ISBN : 0
