‎James Wyld unknown London: Very nice and finely engraved map of North America by Wyld who was the successor to William Faden one of the best 18th century English mapmakers. Wyld maintained Faden's standards and his maps are among the finest published in the early 19th century. This map shows Britain in possession of the Pacific Coast as far south as the Columbia River. It identifies the Missouri Territory as stretching all the way to the Oregon coast and it shows several fictitious rivers including the famous Buenaventura River flowing from the Salt Lake of Teguayo to the Paciifc Ocean. Nice margins with some very light toning. Neatly hand-colored. Leaf. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.‎

Each image measures 23" x 23", northern page measures 23" x 26.25", southern page measures 27.5" x 23". Beautifully detailed large scale double hemispheres, showing views from each pole. Some areas near the poles have not yet been fully explored. Unusually, Northern sheet is oriented horizontally while the Southern sheet is oriented vertically. Bottom edge of each plate is cutoff, but is original. Northern sheet has minor acid burn along edges, top edge is a little worn; image is unaffected.‎

‎Colour lithograph map, dissected and mounted on linen, extending west to east from Sunbury to Rainham and north to south from Southgate to Croydon, some light discolouration, green felt-tip pen mark in bottom right of reference table, original green cloth covers with publisher's label, rubbed. Dimensions: 510 by 685mm. (20 by 27 inches). The first state was entitled 'Wyld's Railway Map of The Environs of London'. The geological infomation has been simply overprinted to create the second state, and so the map also shows the rail network around London. Hyde 140 state 2; not in Boyle.‎

Š Measuring 650 by 830mm (25.25 by 32.75 inches), this finely detailed map encompasses Pekin (Beijing) in the North-East to the border of Birmah (Myanmar) in the South-West, including much of Tibet and Korea, as well. About 51" wide by 42!" high 129.5 cm by 108.5 cm unfolded folds to 5!" by 8!". Handcolored in pink orange green blue & yellow. Scale is one inch to the mile; shows from Tring and Wanborough in the west to Great Waltham and Hunton in the east. Paste-paper covered boards front & back with matching slipcase; printed label on the case is darkened with a chipped corner pencilled notes; the case itself is quite chipped & scuffed. Linen backing shows some foxing & light waterstains; the map itself shows only a little discoloration. Later Printing. Cloth. Good. 5!" by 8!".‎

The Union Pacific Railroad is shown as complete - it was joined in 1869 with the Central Pacific Railroad in 1869 creating the 1st transcontinental railway. The Dakotas are not yet split into North & South and Oklahoma as "Indian Territory". The Northern Pacific Railway is finished through the Dakotas which are unnamed and the balance of the route to the Pacific coast is only dotted in. The South Pacific Railway is only dotted in. Kansas is overlaying half of Colorado and there are horizontal borders for New Mexico & Arizona. An inset of Great Britain to the right on the same scale. 21 1/2 x 15" with very wide margins. Engraved map period color. Excellent condition.‎

‎PLAN OF THE ATTACK AND BOMBARDMENT OF CANTON. FROM THE PLAN OF THE "TIMES SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT". LONDON, JAMES WYLD, FEBRUARY, 20TH, 1858.‎

‎Broadsheet lithographic plan, tears to left and right margins skilfully repaired. Dimensions: 350 by 530mm. (13.75 by 20.75 inches). Rare separately published plan detailing the assult on Canton during the Second Opium War. A Very detailed broadsheet plan of the British and French attack on Canton in December 1857, marking the naval positions in the river, and the successive stages of the advance as outlying forts were captured first, before the assult on the city itself. Canton is shown in outline, with only the defences and principal civic buildings highlighted. An inset, 'Part of the PROVINCE ofKWANG-TUNG' shows Canton with its hinterland to about 100 miles, and down to the sea, with both Hong Kong and Macao prominent. It is an interesting commentary on communications of the period that Wyld was able to publish such a detailed map, and of such a distant place, so shortly after the battle, while an advertisement lists the other maps of the region with which the public (and government) could follow accounts of the war.‎
