Preserved in a green slipcases and case. Philadelphia: Smith & Wistar 1849. First Edition in English of Michaux's Sylva together with an Early Edition of Nuttall's Sylva in matching publisher's bindings. A spectacular set of the most important work on American trees prior to the twentieth century. "It is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind and is a production of unrivalled interest and beauty" Sabin. Michaux's portion of the work was originally printed in Paris in 1817-19. In 1825 the 156 copperplates were purchased by the geologist William Maclure who brought them to the United States. A first American edition including Nuttall's additional volumes was eventually published between 1841 and 1852. François André Michaux 1770-1855 based his Sylva on extensive travels in the eastern half of America and those of his father from the 1790s on. Both men were friendly with Jefferson and other leading figures who aided them in their work and travels. His book was first published with a Philadelphia imprint in 1817-19 although actually printed in Paris where the stipple plates were engraved as well. These plates were executed by the great French flower painters Pierre-Joseph Redouté and his associate Pancrace Bessa. Thomas Nuttall 1786-1859 one of the most intrepid American naturalists of his day travelled extensively in the Mississippi Valley and the far west in the 1820s and 1830s gathering botanical specimens. His work designed to supplement that of Michaux covers eastern species missed by the Frenchman and new species that Nuttall encountered in the Midwest and Rocky Mountains. Nuttall's Sylva first appeared in Philadelphia in 1842-49 and contains 121 plates same as in the issue offered herewith. Spotting to text as in nearly all copies fragile heads to spines chipped. Very scarce especially in this condition in uniform American publisher's bindings. Raphael An Oak Spring Sylva No. 20. Bennett 76. Stafleu Taxonomic Literature 842 929. Ex-lib. with unobtrusive blindstamps contents bit tanned else very good. Andre Michaux came to America in 1785 to collect information on American trees which might be valuable to the French government. With the help of his son François Andre Michaux established a nursery and travelled extensively throughout the United States until 1796. In 1801 he published a work on American oaks followed in 1803 by the present work the most detailed study of American trees then issued. Although the titlepage is dated 1820 this issue is identical to that of 1803 but with a cancel titlepage and the present issue is scarcer than its predecessor. The engraved plates were executed by P.J. Redouté while the text was largely the work of the elder Michaux with some assistance from his son and Louis Claude Richard whom Asa Gray credited with the "sagacious observations and the elegant terse and highly characteristic specific phrases of this work." ‎Paris: L'Imprimerie de L. Haussmann 1813. 3 volumes tall octavo. 9 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches. Half-titles 2pp. of errata at end of vol.III. 138 hand-coloured colour stipple engravings. Extra illustrated with a carte-de-visite albumen portrait photograph of the author by J.A. Whipple of Boston tipped in at the front of vol.I. Foxing to the text some minor offsetting to the plates. Expertly bound to style in half dark brown morocco over nineteenth century marbled paper-covered boards spines lettered in gilt Provenance: Theodore Lyman III 1833-1897 signature in each volume Theodore Lyman's copy of the original issue in French of Michaux's great work on North American trees including beautiful colour plates printed in Paris many after Redouté. This is the most important work relating to American trees published prior to the 20th century and excepting the unillustrated Arbustrum Americanum by Humphrey Marshall Philadelphia 1785 it is the first significant work devoted to North American sylva. In the English translation as The North American Sylva this book remained the standard work on the subject for most of the 19th century. It was the product of the efforts of one of the greatest naturalists to work in 19th-century America François A. Michaux who together with his father André was a pioneer in the natural history exploration of Eastern North America. The beautifully-executed plates illustrate leaves and nuts or berries of American trees across the entire continent. The English and Latin names are printed in the caption of each plate. Michaux's work is based on his extensive travels in the Eastern half of America and those of his father from the 1790s on. Both men were friendly with Jefferson and other leading figures who aided them in their work and travels. The plates were executed by the great French flower painter Redouté and his associate Bessa. At least two sets are known to have the date of 1813 on the title-page of the first volume most likely denoting a later issue. The first volume of this copy bears the correct date of 1810. The work was issued in twenty-four parts during 1810-1813. This set with provenance to American soldier and naturalist Theodore Lyman III. Lyman studied under Louis Agassiz at Harvard and continued his studies researching starfish off the Florida coast. After a European tour at the outbreak of the Civil War he served on General Meade's staff. Following the war he was a state Fish Commissioner a federal commissioner and one of the first scientists to advocate the widespread use of fish ladders known then as "fishways." He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the National Academy of Sciences a trustee of the Peabody Education Fund and an overseer of Harvard University. This copy extra-illustrated with a rare carte-de-visite albumen portrait photograph of F.A. Michaux by John Adams Whipple 1822-1891 of Boston after the daguerrotype portrait taken for Dr. Asa Gray during his visit to Paris in June 1851. Cf. ‎Paris: Printed by C. d'Hautel 1819. 2 volumes in four as issued octavo. 10 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches. 2 half-titles as issued. 156 hand-finished colour-printed stipple-engraved plates after P.J. Redouté 27 P. Bessa 92 and others by Gabriel 108 Bessin 16 and others. Text with old dampstaining the plates less so but with occasional cockling and small spots. Publisher's yellow paper-covered boards letterpress paper labels to backstrips uncut some fading and neat restoration to backstrips First edition in English third issue of Michaux's masterpiece and a classic of American natural history: the most important work relating to American trees published in the 19th century. Michaux's work is based on his and his father's extensive travels in the eastern half of America from the 1790s on. Both men were friendly with Jefferson and other leading figures who aided them in their work and travels. The masterwork was first published in parts between 1810 and 1813 as Histoire des arbres forestiers de l'Amerique septentrionale . In 1817 Michaux began work on an English translation issuing a section of the text on oak trees believed to have been translated by Michaux himself with no plates which was then cancelled MacPhail 16. When the first edition in English was subsequently issued between 1817 and 1819 the first issue contained the text from the cancelled publication with the remainder of the text translated by Augustus L. Hillhouse of Connecticut. The subsequent second and third issues contained the entire Hillhouse translation printed in Paris by C. D'Hautel and with page 112 numbered "112-136" to account for Hillhouse's translation being shorter than the previous. The beautifully-executed images from the same plates in all three issues were executed by the engraver Gabriel and others after original drawings by the great French botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté and his associate Pancrace Bessa. This third issue in two volumes is the most complete and accurate with corrections to plate numbers signatures and pagination. Of the issues containing the present Hillhouse translation Sabin writes: "Of the various editions with the text in English this notwithstanding some typographical errors is the best." And referring to Michaux's work with Thomas Nuttall's continuation Sabin continues: "It is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind and is a production of unrivalled interest and beauty." The main difference between the first issue and the present set is that the pagination is in two volumes instead of the original three and some of the plate numbers have been corrected. Of the present issue translated from the French by Augustus L. Hillhouse Sabin says "Of the various editions with the text in English this notwithstanding some typographical errors is the best." Hillhouse's translation was shorter than the translation for the 1817 edition of the first volume and therefore page 112 in the first volume of this set is numbered 112-136 in order to maintain the pagination of the succeeding section. Thomas Nuttall later continued the work begun by Michaux and of the combined work of both men Sabin states: "It is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind and is a production of unrivalled interest and beauty." Bennett p.76; MacPhail André & François-André Michaux 17c; Meisel III pp.379-81; cf. Oak Spring Sylva 20; Sabin 48694; cf. Savage André and François André Michaux Charlottesville 1986; Stafleu & Cowan 5962.

Printed by C. D'Hautel unknown books‎

‎Paris: Printed by C. D'Hautel 1819. Two volumes. 6v1385; 44171pp. plus 156 handcolored plates. Half titles. Early 19th-century three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Slight chipping at toe of spine of first volume. Front hinge of second volume tender. Light scattered foxing on text leaves only plates fine. Overall a very good set. Inscriptions dated 1837 to Lieut. James Glynn U.S. Navy in each volume. Bookplate of the Horticultural Society of New York noting Kenneth K. Mackenzie's bequest of the book. An early reissue of the first edition of Michaux. The primary difference between the first issue and the present set is that the pagination herein is in two volumes instead of the original three and some of the plate numbers have been corrected. The same beautiful color plates printed in Paris many after Redouté are present here as in the first issue. This publication is the most important work relating to American trees prior to the 20th century. It is the product of the efforts of one of the greatest naturalists to work in 19th century America François A. Michaux. The beautifully executed plates illustrate leaves and nuts or berries of American trees across the entire continent. Thomas Nuttall later continued the work begun by Michaux and of the combined work of both men Sabin states: "It is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind and is a production of unrivalled interest and beauty." Michaux's work is based on his extensive travels in the eastern half of America and those of his father from the 1790s on. Both men were friendly with Jefferson and other leading figures who aided them in their work and travels. This edition was printed in Paris where the plates were engraved as well. Both volumes contain the Paris imprint of D'Hautel. The plates were executed by the great French flower painter Redouté and his associate Bessa. The sheets of the first effort at reprinting the work were destroyed by fire but the copper plates were separately stored and thus survived to be employed in a later combined edition issued by Rice and Hart of Philadelphia. ‎Michaux Francois Andre:‎

‎THE NORTH AMERICAN SYLVA; OR A DESCRIPTION OF THE FOREST TREES OF THE UNITED STATES CANADA AND NOVA SCOTIA‎

‎Philadelphia: Robert P. Smith Publisher. 1853. Three volumes. 156 handcolored engravings. Half title in first volume. with: Nuttall Thomas: THE NORTH AMERICAN SYLVA. Philadelphia: Robert P. Smith Publisher. 1853. Three volumes. 121 handcolored lithographs. Uniform contemporary green morocco stamped in gilt with botanical design on front and rear covers spines gilt gilt inner dentelles a.e.g. Front hinge of second volume of Michaux set cracked extremities lightly rubbed. A few fox marks mostly on text leaves with the plates generally clean and brightly colored. Overall a very good set in uniform contemporary bindings. An early issue of Michaux and Nuttall's classic work of American natural history. Originally published as separate works these titles merged into a regularly produced combined work of six volumes beginning in 1851. The Nuttall appears to have the same collation as the first edition of 1842-49. The Michaux has virtually the same collation as the 1850/51 and 1852 issues which precede it. The beautiful color plates were printed in Paris many after Redouté. The Nuttall contains 121 plates as in the first issue of 1842/46/49. The Michaux contains 156 color plates as called for on the titlepage six more plates than in previous issues. This publication is the most important work relating to American trees prior to the 20th century. It is the product of the efforts of two of the greatest naturalists to work in 19th-century America François André Michaux and Thomas Nuttall. The beautifully executed plates illustrate leaves and nuts or berries of American trees across the entire continent. Sabin says of the work "It is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind and is a production of unrivalled interest and beauty." Michaux's work is based on his extensive travels in the eastern half of America and those of his father from the 1790s on. Both men were friendly with Jefferson and other leading figures who aided them in their work and travels. The plates were executed by the great French flower painter Redouté and his associate Bessa. The sheets of the first effort at reprinting the work were destroyed by fire but the copper plates were separately stored and thus survived to be employed in a later combined edition issued by Rice and Hart of Philadelphia Thomas Nuttall was one of the most intrepid American naturalists of his day travelling extensively in the Mississippi Valley and the Far West in the 1820s and '30s to gather botanical specimens. His work designed to supplement that of Michaux covers eastern species overlooked by the Frenchman and new species Nuttall had gathered in the Midwest and West. His work was first published in Philadelphia in 1842-49. The more up-to-date method of using colored lithographs for the plates was employed in the Nuttall volumes since the publisher did not have engraved plates in stock as was the case with the Michaux work. A handsome set in the publisher's original binding of a classic of American natural history. BENNETT p.76 ref. MEISEL III pp.379-81 437. SABIN 48695 56351. OAK SPRING SYLVA 20 ref.
