Off Beat presents photographs taken in New York City in 2008 and 2009, when A-chan began working with black and white film. The images were made in the same wandering spirit as those in Vibrant Home, also to be published this season by Steidl. A-chan explored the streets of New York, allowing her compositions to reveal themselves rather than searching for pre-determined motifs. Pigeons perched on a branch, the lyrical geometry of serviettes on a table, or the play of shapes created by a bus silhouetted against traffic: such is the material of A-chan's restless, charming vision. "Non ascolto musica mentre faccio fotografie. Perché io canto. Mi chiedo se un giorno troverò qualcuno che canti la mia stessa canzone". Off Beat presenta fotografie scattate a New York City nel 2008 e 2009, quando A-Chan ha iniziato a lavorare con la pellicola in bianco e nero. Le immagini sono state realizzate con lo stesso spirito vagabondo di quelle di Vibrant Home, anch'esso pubblicato da Steidl. A-Chan ha esplorato le strade di New York, permettendo alle sue composizioni di rivelarsi piuttosto che cercare motivi predeterminati. Vibrant Home is A-chan's tender visual diary of the three places in which she has lived since 2000: Tokyo, Fujishiro and New York City. Wandering the streets with her camera, she captures that which we see but overlook: a grid of power lines against the sky, magnolia blossoms reaching sunwards over a wall, a self-absorbed child on the subway, rain-lacquered streets. A-chan explains: "Vibrant Home is the name of the apartment I used to live in in Tokyo. That was my first time to live alone. There is beauty, slight movement. I stop walking and just follow my intuition."Born in 1978 and raised in Japan, A-chan began her career designing advertisements, CD jackets and magazine editorial. She has exhibited her photographs and held slide shows at galleries including Nadar Gallery and Lounge Roots, both in Tokyo. In 2006 A-chan moved to New York City and in 2007 began working with Robert Frank. She has co-edited and codesigneda number of Frank's books including Tal Uf Tal Ab (2010), Pangnirtung (2011) and You Would (2012). Vibrant Home è il tenero diario visivo di A-chan dei tre luoghi in cui ha vissuto dal 2000: Tokyo, Fujishiro e New York City. Vagando per le strade con la sua macchina fotografica, cattura ciò che vediamo ma che trascuriamo: una griglia di linee elettriche contro il cielo, fiori di magnolia che si protendono verso il sole oltre un muro, un bambino egocentrico in metropolitana, strade luccicanti di pioggia. A-chan spiega: "Vibrant Home è il nome dell'appartamento in cui vivevo a Tokyo. C'è bellezza, un leggero movimento. Smetto di camminare e seguo la mia intuizione".Nata nel 1978 e cresciuta in Giappone, A-chan ha iniziato la sua carriera disegnando pubblicità, copertine di CD e redazionali di riviste. Ha esposto le sue fotografie e tenuto mostre di diapositive in gallerie come la Nadar Gallery e la Lounge Roots, entrambe a Tokyo. Nel 2006 A-chan si è trasferita a New York e nel 2007 ha iniziato a lavorare con Robert Frank. Ha coeditato e codisegnato diversi libri di Frank, tra cui Tal Uf Tal Ab (2010), Pangnirtung (2011) e You Would (2012).
