BRASSAI and Paul Morand
Paris de Nuit
Paris: Edition Arts et Métiers Graphiques 1933. Former owner's innocuous book plate signature that reads "Brassai" but likely not in the photographer's hand light edge creases to the bottom corners gently handled with minor wear; a solid very good copy lacking serious defects in photo-illustrated spiral-bound wrappers. First Edition. Spiral bound quarto sixty-four gravure plates. The best-known and most iconic of the great Paris photobooks printed in a deep gravure so tactile it seems almost as if charcoal will rub off on the hands of the viewer. The cobblestone covers and endpapers are particularly evocative. Parr / Badger v1 134; Roth 76-77. Paris: Edition Arts et Métiers Graphiques unknown books

Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions which feature a different image on the cover. The true First Edition is an exact facsimile of the "Chez Suzy 1931" French Edition Cover Image of a nude French prostitute which was immediately replaced with a more familial and "safer" image such as the one shown on Amazon and other major platforms in English. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Thames & Hudson: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial hard boards with black cloth overboards and titles on the cover and spine as issued. Photographs by Brassai. Text by Sylvie Aubenas and Quentin Bajac in felicitous English translations. "Brassai's night photography of Paris assures his place among the great photographers of the twentieth century. Brassai was the first and still the most famous photographer to chronicle Paris after dark. Through his eyes Paris becomes a world of shadows in which light the prerequisite for any photograph is reduced to dimly lit windows streetlamps in the fog or reflections on a rain-soaked pavement. Analyzes the unique nature of his photographic vision: Part reportage part social document part poetic exploration" Publisher's blurb. "The meaning of art is not authenticity but the expression of authenticity" Brassa. An absolute "must-have" title for Brassai collectors. <b><i> This title is now collectible. Although he disliked photography at the time he found it necessary to use it in his journalistic assignments and soon came to appreciate the medium's unique aesthetic qualities. In his remarkable oeuvre of photographs Brassai imbues even the most inanimate images with a warm sense of human life. The present early collection of drawings shows the artist honing his eye through keen observation of detail and nuance precisely the qualities which would inform the work for which he is today best remembered. <br style=""> hardcover books

BRASSAI MILLER Henry 1891 1980
Photobook Quiet Days In Clichy
Paris: The Olympia Press 8 Rue de Nesle 1958. Second Edition. Printed Wrappers. Fine-/Fine-. Second Edition of this short novel celebrating love art and the Bohemian life with 29 full-page photogravures recto and verso of which one verso only and one double-page photomontage of Paris after dark by Brassai pseudonym of Gyula Halász. Small 8vo 172 x 103mm: 1713pp because of a binding error the blank leaf pp. 175-176 of the first edition was inserted following p. 170 giving the appearance of two fewer pages. Original thick card wrappers with wraparound abstract design by T. Tajiri in grey yellow and black; text printed on thick white wove paper in dark brown ink. About Fine slight spine lean trivial edge wear of this fragile volume. Shifreen & Jackson A100c. Kearney 1.16.2. Auer 364. O'Roark Collection A182 first edition. Originally published in 1956. Both Quiet Days in Clichy and the accompanying short story "Mara-Marignan" date from the time of Tropic of Cancer when Miller was an obscure penniless writer in Paris. A few months after he returned to New York in 1940 a quick moneymaking opportunity writing pornography for an Oklahoma erotica collector named Roy M. Johnson came his way. Early drafts of "Mara-Marignan" and Quiet Days in Clichy were the result. Johnson was not impressed; he found Miller's prose to be "too poetic" and the manuscripts went missing-"lost for over ten years" Miller wrote in 1956-then "turned up miraculously." Miller rewrote both stories in Big Sur in May of that year. The photographs of 1930s Paris are of street-scenes of prostitutes; sailors fondling women in cafes young people flirting kissing dancing and drinking. N. B.
