‎'the Fairbank Plan' Catalogue / Valuable Articles / Given for Coupons from the Fairbank Specialties‎

‎Chicago, IL, N. K. Fairbank Company, ND (c. 1890s). pp. 32.4to,,Bound in original printed stapled card covers,An interesting retail coupon catalogue. Apparently, the Fairbank Company, in order to encourage the 19th century consumer to purchase its products, had an arrangement with retail stores to issue coupons upon the purchase of gold dust washing powder, fairy soap, Fairbank's glycerine tar soap, Fairbanl's scouring soap, and cottolene. Customers could redeem these coupons for the items in this catalogue, which displayed quite a wide array of merchandise; from jewelry, silverware and cut glass to books, musical instruments, rifles and pistols, and household goods (samples of which are illustrated in this catalogue). The card covers are well-worn and, at some distant point in the past, a mouse nibbled the top right corner. The contents are in quite good condition, with no markings or serious flaws, other than a few corner creases. Ill.: black-&-white illustrations. wrappers .‎

‎1955 75 Deloraine Manitoba 75th Anniversary Celebration 1880 / Sunday, June 18th to Thursday, June 23rd‎

‎Deloraine, MB, 1955.,This is a photostatic copy of an original book. The original appears to have contained 74 pages of text (plus title page), and measured approximately 15 x 22 cms. This reproduction has lightened a bit, and the photos are somehat blurred, although the text is quite legible. The photostat is done on one side only of 8 1/2 x 11' paper and has been bound, in the past, by a three-hole punch clip. We have it placed in a clear glassine sleeve. This title is not referenced in either Peel, or 'A Bibliography of Manitoba Local History'. There are only two copies of this pamphlet shown in WorldCat, and it is now rarely seen. We estimate that an original copy would be offered at four times the price of our copy. Ill.: black-&-white illustrations.‎

‎A Savage Club Souvenir‎

‎Privately Printed, 1916. 1st edition. Hardcover. pp. xv, 244.8vo,,Bound in original woven gray-green cloth with gilt emblem,According to Andrew Halliday, who was elected a joint Honorary Secretary at the first annual meeting in 1858, 'The Savage Club was formed to supply the want which Dr. Samuel Johnson and his friends experienced when they founded the Literary Club. A little band of authors, journalists and artists felt the need of a place of reunion where, in their hours of leisure, they might gather together and enjoy each other's society, apart from the publicity of that which was known in Johnson's time as the coffee house, and equally apart from the chilling splendour of the modern club.' This edition, one of only 500 copies printed, 'brings together some brief recollections and sketches by members'. It is a scarce item, seldom seen in its original presentation. ‎Baxter Times [Together with] Bp Collector and Baxter Times [Together with] Books Prints and Pictures‎

‎1924 to 1927. 1st printing. Wraps.Small 4to,,A lot of 41 issues of this periodical relating to Baxter prints,'The Baxter Times', which describes itself as 'A Journal for Nineteeth Century Colour Print Collectors', commenced monthly publication in early 1923. It was succeeded in 1925 by 'The BP Collector and Baxter Times' in 1925 which, in late 1927, was replaced by the monthly publication 'Books Prints and Pictures'. Our offering is a lot of 41 original issues of these now sought-after publications. It commences with the premier issue of the 'Baxter Times' (Vol. 1, no. 1, June, 1923) and continues consecutively for 20 issues until Vol. II, no. 11, April, 1925, omitting only nos. 22 and 10 of Vol. I, and nos. 8 and 12 of Vol. II. Each of these issues is in very good condition. It commences again with no. 1, Vol. III, December, 1925, of the 'BP Collector and Baxter Times' which continues consecutively for 17 issues to Vol. V, no. 2, July, 1927, omitting only nos. 5 and 8 of Vol. IV. The last issue in this run is Vol. V, no. 2, July, 1927. The issues in this series show wear, and occasional loss to portions of the covers (not affecting contents). The last iteration of this journal consists of four issues of 'Books Prints and Pictures', commencing with Vol. V, no. 3. August, 1927 and running consecutively to no. 6, published November, 1927. Each of thse four issues shows somewhat less wear than the preceding numbers, but are not in quite as excellent condition as the first 20 issues. This is an essential reference source for collectors of the prints of George Baxter and his licensees including Kronheim, Mansell, Bradshaw and Blacklock. ‎Recollections of Eton. By an Etonian. With Illustrations by Sydney P. Hall‎

‎New York City, Harper & Brothers, 1870. Wraps. pp. 126, ads.8vo,,,A scarce and unusual item, written as a novella in a style which precedes, but is similar to, 'Tom Brown's Schooldays' (first published in 1858 and again in an 1885 edition also illustrated by Sydney Hall). It must have been fairly popular with American readers as Harper's 1880 annual catalog still lists it for sale, and still in paper wraps (as is our copy). Harcourt's ''Eton Bibliography' notes that this title was first published in 1825 as one of a collection of Eton-related novellas; and then again in 1842 as an edited version of only 45 pages in Hood's 'New Monthly Magazine and Humorist', and again in 1864 by Bracebridge, and finally in 1870 by Chapman and Hall (presumably with somewhat larger type as the entry indicates 362 pages. Our offering, and the 1870 London edition, would appear to be the only ones with the delightful Sydney Hall illustrations. It is curious that Harcourt does not record the Harper edition. Our copy is in the original printed paper wraps, with a full-page advertisement for three of Harper's magazines on the back cover and a two-page detailed list of 'Harper's Library of Select Novels' preceding the title page. The novella is divided into two parts: 'The Lower Boy' and 'The Upper Boy', both of 14 chapters. The covers are soiled, the spine heavily chipped, and the page edges ragged. There are spots of foxing and soiling in the text which remains, however, perfectly readable. Still a good copy. The author is not identified by there are suggestions that it was Charles Frederick Johnstone, about whom very little, if anything, is known. Ill.: black-&-white illustrations. The rather small type is set in double columns.‎
