[Man Ray] .
The Perpetual Motif: The Art of Man Ray.

New York:: Abbeville Press 1988. First Printing of the First Edition. A Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Amid the exuberant chaos of the Paris art scene between the world wars among the jarring factions of Dadaists Surrealists Futurists and miscellaneous others Philadelphia-born Man Ray was universally admired yet - it seemed - stubbornly mysterious. Although he looms large in today's standard art histories as a figure of unmistakable importance few people have seen more than a selection of his remarkable photographs or a handful of his enigmatic "objects". Indeed surprisingly little is known about this extraordinary and innovative creator of paintings collages drawings films aesthetic theory and autobiography - as well as photographs and objects. "Perpetual Motif: The Art of Man Ray" is the first major book on this mysterious and eclectic artist and his work" The Bloomsbury Review. It not only examines all aspects of the artist's production in all its forms but also discusses Man Ray's multifarious connections with the artistic and political radicals of pre-World War I New York the underground avant-garde as well as the haute monde of Paris between the wars and the emigre society of Hollywood after World War 11. Illustrated with nearly 300 of the artist's works in full colour and duotone many published for the first time.
Abbeville Press, hardcover

Andre BRETON (Pref) - MAN RAY
La Photographie n'est pas l'art Photography Is Not Art
GLM 1937. Fine.

Breton Andre; Man Ray; Tzara Tristan; MAN RAY
Man Ray: Photographs 1920-1934 Paris.
1934. MAN RAY. Man Ray: Photographs 1920-1934. By Andre Breton and others. Paris. Illustrations after photographs by Man Ray throughout. 4to. original wrappers spiral bound preserved in a recent linen cloth box. Hartford: James Thrall Soby n.d. First Edition stated second edition on title-page but only one edition was in fact published. An exceptional copy of the classic compilation of Man Ray's work Inscribed by Man Ray to Chilean photographer Jorge Opazo. In addition to the text by Breton there are contributions by Paul Eluard Rose Selavy Marcel Duchamp and Tristan Tzara. Man Ray himself provided an introduction and Picasso a portrait of Man Ray. The tendency of the spiral bindings to disintigrate have made this a scarce book and in this copy the spiral binding is still intact. There is slight soiling to the rear cover which is white and a few insignificant internal marks which in no way detract from the desirability of this copy. DADA Tzara, Tristan, Edgar Varese, Philippe Soupault, Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes, Man Ray, Max Ernst et al
DADA SOULÈVE TOUT. DADA connaît tout. DADA crache tout. MAIS .
Paris.: Au Sans Pareil. 1921 12 Janvier. Folio. 277 x 212 mm. Drop-head title and printed text recto and verso in French with typical dada typography manicules and type variation imprint and list of signatories at foot of verso. A very fine example never folded of this scarce iconoclastic and blasphemous dada manifesto an excellent specimen of dada typography.Tzara's 1921 restatement of dada had a very serious purpose: to reinvigorate and revitalise dada. Tzara was to some extent successful and dada continued albeit with the same troubles that prompted the issue of this manifesto. The document is an outstanding example of the typographical caprice and linguistic inventiveness that made dada so intriguing and appealing. The use of various other schools of art Cubism Expressionism Simultaneism Futurism Unanism Neo-Claissicism Ultraism Creationism Vorticism and Imagism to underline dada's point or rather its lack thereof is classic. Tzara's most iconoclastic and blasphemous slogans were taken up by Van Doesburg for his own later dada poster produced in conjunction with Schwitters 'kleine dada soirée': 'DADA EXISTE DEPUIS TOUJOURS / LA SAINTE VUERGE DÉJÀ FUT DADAÎSTE!'This manifesto was truly international as noted at the head of the sheet: 'Les Signataires de ce manifeste habitent la France l'Amérique l'Espagne l'Allemagne l'Italie la Suisse la Belgique etc. mais n'ont aucune nationalité.'The signatories as listed were: 'E. Varèse Tr. Tzara Ph. Soupault Soubeyran J. Rigaut G. Ribemont-Dessaignes M. Ray sic F. Picabia B. Péret C. Pansaers R. Huelsenbeck J. Evola M. Ernst P. Eluard Suz. Duchamp M. Duchamp Crotti G. Cantarelli Marg. Buffet Gab. Buffet A. Breton Baargeld Arp W. C. Aresnberg L. Aragon.''In 1921 Tristan Tzara found himself battling to sustain Dada's declining popularity. Aesthetic political and social differences among the movement's most prominenet members shook Dada at the doundation. In line with Dada's emphasis on easy distribution Tzara created this one-page flyer presenting a condensed more direct iteration of the Dada Manifesto . The text's inconsistent typefaces orientation and size embody the disorientation and randomness at the heart of the Dadaist philosophy.' Anne Delebaree writing in 'Petits Papiers des Avant-Gardes: La Collection Paul Desrtribats'.Destribats Tracts 132 / 133; Ades 8.45; Pompidou 326 / 327. Au Sans Pareil. unknown

This volume provides many new insights on Man Ray particularly within the final creative phase of his life. Trees & Flowers - Insects & Animals
Steidl. New. 2009. Hardcover. 386521696X . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 370 pages; 320 drawings and photographs. Description: "ocked in enormous bank vaults and largely removed from public scrutiny for more than a decade the little known collection of the Man Ray Trust comprises more than 4000 works by Man Ray. The 320 photographs and drawings selected for this publication are among the rarest of Man Rays works and will be a revelation to even his most devoted admirers. At the core of Man Ray: Trees Flowers Insects Animals is a series of landscape photographs made by Man Ray from the 1920s through the 1950s many of which bear the distinct influence of Eugène Atget. With subjects including castles and ruined buildings street scenes and the objects from which he drew inspiration for other artworks the photographs and drawings in this book represent an intermediary step in Man Rays creative process. The title of the series Trees Flowers Insects Animals was discovered by the editor scrawled across the backside of a photograph and provides a key to this most unusual collection. These photographs function as a subject index to the themes and motifs that Man Ray employed in his better known works. They are on the one hand a record of his travels and observations in Europe and the United States. On the other hand they are the relic of a moment preserved by Man Ray for later use and interpretation." -- with a bonus offer-- . Steidl hardcover

Man Ray
Alphabet for Adults First Edition inscribed to Bebe and Louis Barron
Beverly Hills CA: Copley Galleries 1948. First Edition. First Edition. One of 500 copies issued. INSCRIBED by the author and artist on the front endpaper: "For Charlotte Bebe and Louis Barron. Cordially Man Ray Hollywood 1949." An exceptional avant-garde association and in one of the strangest alphabet books ever published.

Around this time the Barrons were beginning to experiment with committing electronic sounds as music to magnetic tape and were ultimately not only pioneers in that field inventors. One year after the date of this inscription they would compose their first piece "Heavenly Menagerie" and they would go on to produce the first electronic film score for the seminal 1956 science fiction film "Forbidden Planet" credited as "tonalities" rather than "music" at the time due to union rules. The Barrons' earliest compositions were slow and laborious as their early work preceded the digital age and involved building circuits and tape splicing to create even the smallest sequences of sound. In the decades that followed electronic composition has become a worldwide phenomenon in every musical category. A tremendous association between pioneers in two major fields of twentieth century artistic endeavor.

Near Fine in illustrated cloth covered boards with no dust jacket as issued.
