Founded in 1821 and today operated under the auspice of the University of Pennsylvania this institution is the first pharmaceutical college in North America. AM unsigned 2pp 6�" X 8�" n.p. n.d. Very good. Slight separations along single horizontal fold. Headed "Library of the Philada College of Pharmacy / Circular" this unsigned essay is a thumbnail history of this institution's library prepared to be typeset and distributed for collection-building purposes. "More than twenty years ago" it begins "the College of Pharmacy commenced the formation of a Library for the use of its members and their apprentices when by the Liberality of some of the early friends of the Institution and a small appropriation from the College about five hundred volumes were collected; soon after this effort the college procured a lot on Ground rent and erected their present hall on Felbert Street above 7th. This large expenditure has prevented the College from doing any thing more for the library except to bind periodicals taken in exchange for our Journal until the past Year. we have come to the conclusion that the next most important object to promote the interest of our Profession is the building up of our Library and extending its usefulness by collecting together every thing we can procure in relation to the early as well as present history of Pharmacy and its colateral branches. we earnestly request from our members and other interested in the prosperity of our useful Institution such books as they may be willing to spare from their own collections." There's a prescription for success! The ink paper and handwriting are all consistent with a date roughly 20 years after the founding of the college: circa 1840. To an unnamed addressee, written six days before his appointment as Lord-Lieutenancy of Ireland: "I am so much inclined to serve Captain Lushington, who belongs to me here, that I should have little merit in obeying your Lordship's orders, were it in my power to do it; but hitherto He has been above me, being a Captain already, and I having yet had nothing above a company to dispose of. In the Commission I gave your Lordship to be my Steward, I inserted the fullest powers possible, without either account or Control, and have not reserv'd to my self the liberty of even advising much less of directing. And whatever you think fit to do, will I am sure be the best that can be done, and whatever I should have done my self, would certainly have been the worst [...]". - Slightly browned due to paper and somewhat spotty; fol. 2 slightly spotty and with small paper breakthrough, traces of old mounting on the reverse.

An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten: "Indem ich den Wunsch ausdrücke, dem Verein gegen Verarmung und Bettelei mit einem Jahresbeitrag von zwanzig Gulden beizutreten, bitte ich das weiter Nöthige gefälligst veranlassen zu wollen". - Philipp Hzg. von Württemberg, Sohn des Herzogs Alexander Friedrich Wilhelm von Württemberg und Marie Christiane d'Orléans, mußte Frankreich mit seiner Familie zusammen 1848 verlassen und lebte fortan auf Schloß Fantaisie bei Bayreuth. Nachdem Pläne zu einer Hochzeit mit Prinzessin Sophie von Bayern, der jüngsten Schwester von Kaiserin Elisabeth von Österreich, sich zerschlagen hatten, ehelichte er Erzherzogin Marie Therese von Österreich, eine Tochter von Erzherzog Albrecht Friedrich von Österreich und Prinzessin Hildegard Luise von Bayern. Ihr 1863-65 errichtetes Palais Württemberg an der Ringstraße wurde - nachdem die Stadtverwaltung die dahinterliegende Gartenanlage zugunsten einer Straße geopfert hatte - 1871 veräußert und im Zuge der Weltausstellung 1873 in adaptierter Form als Hotel Imperial eröffnet. n

Folio. 3 ½ pp. on bifolium. With papered seal. In German. Extensive instructions to his son William IV, Landgrave of Kassel (1532-92). The eldest son of Philipp, William "the Wise" became the founder of the line of Hesse-Kassel, which survives to this day. After the death of Philipp, the foremost Protestant prince, Hesse was divided among his four sons. On 6 April 1562, a few months before the present document was composed, William had been designated by his father to receive the portion around the capital Kassel. - The instructions to the Landgrave and to his lieutenants and colonels in Kassel focus particularly on the application of the Augsburg Confession, the relationships between the Margraves and the Counts Palatinate, the attitude towards the French, etc.: "Instruction was unser sohnn landegrave Wilhelm, unnd unser hofmarschalk, unnd seinen binge, zu Cassell verhandeln, vornehmen, und von unserrn wegen verweisen mugen, auch wie den zweien obristen handlenn, unnd zwischen dem von Undeloch, unnd denselbigen obristen miteln konnen [...]". - Some staining to outside pages, otherwise well-preserved specimen.
