4to. Altogether 5pp. Together with an autograph letter by Fernandel's wife Henriette Manse. Correspondence with the French film director Maurice Cammage concerning various film projects. In the letter from 6 April 1932 Fernandel expresses his astonishment that there was no further news about "The Magical Chair" from Cammage, and announces his engagement for Maurice Tourneur's "Les Gaîtés de l'escadron", which premiered in September 1932: "Je suis très étonné de ne plus avoir de vos nouvelles au sujet du 'Fauteuil Magique' et je voudrais bien savoir ce que vous avez décidé, [...]. Je serais en Allemagne jusqu'au 20 courant puis j'irai directement à Paris ou je suis attendu chez Pathé Natar avec qui je viens de signer ces jours-ci pour tourner 'Les Gaîtés de l'escadron' avec Raimu [...]". - A few days later, on 11 April, it is apparent that the project was abandoned, and Fernandel underlines that he primarily does feature films now but he would make an exception for Cammage if there is a good script, offering to shoot simultaneously with his project with Tourneur: "Veuillez m'adresser à la lecture le résumé de celui que vous compteriez tourner sous peu, quan j'en aurai pris connaissance je vous dirais si je peux le tourner, actuellement je ne fais presque plus de films de première partie mais pour vous être agréable je veux bien si ce scenario est vraiment dans ma nature travailler à nouveau avec vous [...]." - On 15 April Fernandel accepts to shoot "Le Gros Lot" with Cammage and even proposes a score for the movie that he already has in his drawer: "Je vous accuse reception de votre dernière lettre contenant le résumé du scénario 'Le Gros Lot' Je l'ai lu avec attention et je crois en effet que l'on pourra en tirer un bon film. J'accepte donc de le tourner à ma rentrée en France qui ne tardera pas [...]". - On 3 September 1932, writing from Vichy, Fernandel announces that he has signed an exclusive three-year contract with Pathé and thus cannot pursue any projects with Cammage for the moment. If his agent made an exception it would be more expensive than before: "[...] je ne sais pas si je pourrai vous tourner quelque chose à la rentrée, n'ayant plus rien reçu de votre part, j'ai présumé que vous aviez abandonné l'idée de tourner 'Le Cavalier Lafleur' et autre chose et j'ai signé 3 ans en exclusivité avec Pathé Natar à compter du 23 courant. Si vous m'aviez adressé seulement un petit mot j'aurais pu pû me reserver une date pour vous tourner un court métrage. Malgré ça je vais essayer de pouvoir vous être agréable en avisant mon imprésario M. Portelly [...] qui consentira peut-être à me preter à vous sur ma demande, mais je crains que pour les conditions il vous fasse plus cher [...]". - Fernandel had played the main role in Cammage's first short film "Vive la classe" in 1932, and they realized five more short films that same year. Despite Fernandel's contract with Pathé, he and Cammage continued to collaborate as early as 1933, finally shooting "Le Gros Lot" that was mentioned in the 3rd letter. Until 1943 Fernandel appeared in 15 short and feature films by Maurice Cammage. - On 23 April 1932 Fernandel's wife Henriette wrote to inform Cammage that they had to prolong their stay in Berlin because her husband had fallen sick. - The three letters from Berlin on stationery of the "Pension Imperial" and the letter from Vichy on stationery with letterhead "le comique fernandel". - With minor fold tears and some smudging.

Fernández de Córdoba, Gonzalo II, 3rd Duke of Sessa, Governor of the Duchy of Milan (1520-1578).

Folio and 4to. Altogether 6 pp. Together with an original copy of one of the documents and three petitions to the governor. Collection of documents from Gonzalo II Fernández de Córdoba's two terms as Spanish governor of the Duchy of Milan (1558-59 and 1561-64), including a letter to Philip II of Spain and a letter to Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy. - The earliest document in the collection is the letter to the Duke of Savoy on behalf of a military captain named Gulielmo Prato, recommending him to the Duke's favour as the French "confiscated his properties" during the Italian War of 1551-59. Emmanuel Philibert had commanded a Spanish-Savoyan army in the decisive victory against the French in the Battle of St. Quentin (1557), which paved the way for the restoration of the Duchy of Savoy. Written in Genoa, the letter is dated to 26 January 1558 and thus slightly predates Fernández de Córdoba's rule in Milan. He was probably travelling from his native Grenada to Milan via Genoa, following his appointment as governor. - The letter to King Philip II is a recommendation of Gulielmo Prato's father Andrea, castellan of Serravalle, who "has served his Majesty many years in the wars" (Milan, 31 May 1559). The fortified town in question is probably Serravalle Scrivia in the modern Piedmont region, then an imperial fiefdom held by the Genoese Spinola family. - A document signed in Borgo San Marino on 23 October 1558 confirms that Count Giovanni Angosola is the creditor of a loan based on his salary as captain of a company that was to be used to "pay at least 200 scudi of the condemnation of 500 scudi newly issued against Certi di Giussanno", probably one of his soldiers. - Some two months later, Fernández de Córdoba issued a document ordering his magistrates to provide the Capuchin friars of "Alessandria, Abiategrasso, Monza, and Herba" with salt as an act of charity. The original petition, a list of the four towns in question, and a copy of the order with a different signature are enclosed with this interesting document. - In early 1559, Fernández de Córdoba ordered his magistrates to compensate "various poor and friars of the city of Tortona" whose houses had been razed during fortification works (Milan, 22 January 1559). The original petition on behalf of the poor is enclosed. - A document from 13 June 1559 concerns the adjustment of salt prices and the salt tax in Cremona, granting the local nobility reductions. - A similar problem occured in 1563, when a congregation of Dominican friars in the parish of Bellagio on Lake Como requested to receive salt "at the price that is extended to the other religious places". The governor sends the original petition, naming beneficiaries of the reduced price as legal precedent, and asks his magistrate for his opinion before he makes a decision (Milan, 13 March 1563). - Two related documents from June and July of 1563 are the most recent of the collection. They concern the fulfilment of a five-year contract ("capitolatione") between the Spanish crown and the Genoese banker Leonardo Spinola relative to the renewal of the artillery in the Milanese fortifications, the so-called Castello Sforzesco. Leonardo Spinola, not apparently related to the powerful Genoese family of the same name, came to Milan in 1550 as an associate of the banker Tommaso Marino. Today he is chiefly remembered for the construction of Palazzo Spinola in Milan, starting in 1570. - Gonzalo II Fernández de Córdoba, 3rd duke of Sessa, was the maternal grandson and heir of the important general and statesman Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba (1520-78), who had been instrumental in the Conquest of Grenada and later served as Viceroy of Naples. After the untimely death of his parents, Gonzalo received a humanist education in Grenada. As a grandee of Spain he joined the court of Charles V at a young age, accompanying the Emperor in Naples and Rome upon his return from the Conquest of Tunis (1535). In 1548 Gonzalo was part of the retinue of the future king Philip II, accompanying him in Flanders, Milan, and England. As King of Spain, Philip II made Gonzalo his governor of Milan in 1558. - All documents with papered seals and autograph addresses. All but one document annotated and all but the letters to Philip II and Emmanuel Philibert counter-signed twice. Occasional browning and minor tears. The two orders concerning Leonardo Spinola show several deeper tears to the left border and stronger browning. Some words affected by paper damage (Milan, 2 June 1563). The letter to Emmanuel Philibert cut to the lower border, affecting the signature of the governor.

"Genauso erfolgreich war 1857 die Komödie ‚Parini e la satira'. Beide Werke galten lange Zeit als die besten Erzeugnisse auf dem Gebiet des modernen italienischen Lustspiels" (Wikipedia). To Enzo Bentivoglio, Marquese di Gualtieri (1575-1639) in Ferrara, thanking him for earlier support when he was "ill far from my land" and relating that Lorenzo di Medici (1599-1648) had hired or promoted him as trumpeter. - Ottavio Ferrini later joined the court orchestra of Grand Duke Ferdinando II de' Medici, where he played alongside the trumpeter and composer Girolamo Fantini. In the years 1635/36, Ferrini received a higher salary than Fantini, probably due to his senior rank. - Traces of folds. With some browning and foxing. A clipping to the blank leaf.

Je vous serais très reconnaissant et vous prie de recevoir mes sentiments de vive emotion [...]". - Paul Foubert (1812-86), der mutmaßliche Adressat, war 1875 zum Senator auf Lebenszeit gewählt worden. - Etwas gebräunt und mit kleinen Stecknadeldurchstichen sowie einem Antwortvermerk des Adressaten.

Fersen, Axel count, Swedish count and officer (1755-1810).

8vo. ¾ p. Notes in Swedish recording the trial and execution of several persons between October 15 and November 10, 1793. The first of these is his beloved Marie Antoinette. - Hans Axel count Fersen had fought on the French side in the American Revolution; after his return to France in 1783 he had been made commander of the Royal Swedish Regiment in the French Army by Louis XVI. In the years from 1789 onwards, Fersen, long an ardent devotee of the Queen, soon became Marie Antoinette's sole remaining close friend, acting as a liaison between the royal couple and the Swedish monarch. When Louis and Marie Antoinette finally decided to flee with their children in June 1791, it was Fersen to whom they turned for help. He lent the King the necessary funds, obtained the coach and assisted in engineering the flight which so disastrously ended with the royal family's arrest in Varennes. The King and Queen were returned to Paris, and Marie Antoinette began a clandestine, dangerous correspondence with Fersen, who had escaped to Belgium. While there is no question that Fersen deeply loved Marie Antoinette (he probably became aware of a passionate side to his admiration only in 1790) and that his feelings were increasingly returned by the imprisoned Queen, popular tradition has styled Fersen as Marie Antoinette's long-time secret paramour - a myth debunked by Vincent Cronin in his biography of "Louis and Antoinette" (the single source for this story is an account in the highly biased and unreliable memoirs of the former minister Saint-Priest, whose own wife had indeed been Fersen's mistress for a while). However, Antoinette's loyal friend Fersen secretly returned to Paris in 1792 and spent the night in the Queen's prison-like apartment in the Tuileries, and several pieces of evidence suggest that the liaison, which had been forestalled by the events of 1791, was consummated on that night of 13 February 1792. After again escaping from France, Fersen continued to fight for Marie Antoinette's release - unsuccessfully. Fersen mourned her deeply. "The Queen's face, he wrote in his diary, 'follows me wherever I go. Her suffering and death and all my feelings never leave me for a moment. I can think of nothing else [...]'" (Cronin 392). He would never marry, but "lived quietly with his sister, remembering the past. He wished that he had accompanied the King and Queen on their flight and had been killed making possible their escape. The anniversaries of their deaths he remembered devotedly" (Cronin 394f.). - Slight brownstaining, but well-preserved. "Die Frauentracht wirkt hauptsächlich durch die Schwere und Gediegenheit der Stoffe; die Farbe derselben ist meist dunkel oder ganz schwarz, nur die beiden Tücher, die Hals und Oberkörper bekleiden, und etwa die Schürze, stechen durch ihre lebhaft bunten Farben von der übrigen Kleidung ab. Der Kopfschmuck ist immer das wellig gescheitelte Haar mit den herabhängenden Zöpfen, an welchen die schwarzen Zopfbänder vom Rückenteile des Mieders ausgehend, befestiget sind. Über dem buntfarbigen seidenen Bruststück bekleidet ein Mieder von schwarzen [!] Samte den Oberkörper, an dem ausgebogenen Rückenteil ist eine reiche Stickerei von Gold- u. Silberfäden, am vorderen Teile aber zu jeder Seite eine Reihe silberner Haken angebracht, durch welche ein schwarzseidenes Band zum Zuschnüren des Mieders gezogen ist. Der daruntergesetzte Latz von schwarzen [!] Samte mit Metallstickerei ist durch schwarzseidene Schleifen an den Achselbändern der Mieder befestigt. Die Schürze von bunt gemusterter Seide oder von Atlas ist weit u. faltenreich, sie erreicht den Saum des langen Rockes u. ist mit einem schmalen Bündchen versehen, über welches am Anschlusse an das Mieder ein metallgestickter Gürtel von schwarzem Samte gelegt wird. Der Rock ist von dunkler Seide. Die Strümpfe sind weiß und die dazu gehörigen, weit ausgeschnittenen Schuhe sind von schwarzen [!] Glanzleder […]". - Auch der zweite Text, "Würtemberg [!] | (Schwenningen)", beschreibt eine dort landesübliche Tracht.

An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten: "Kürzlich erst von einem nach Italien unternommenen Ausfluge zurückgekehrt, beehre ich mich Ihr inzwischen hier eingelangtes Schreiben vom 10. ds. mit der Bitte zu erwidern, daß es mir gestattet sei gelegentlich Ihre Autographensammlung in Augenschein nehmen zu dürfen [...]". - Knapp einen Monat zuvor war die von Ferstel geplante und ausgeführte Votivkirche eingeweiht worden. - Auf Briefpapier mit gedr. Briefkopf der "Votivkirchen Bau-Leitung".

Ferstel, Sohn des Architekten Heinrich Frh. v. Ferstel, übernahm 1883 das Atelier seines Vaters und erhielt 1892 an der TH Wien einen Lehrauftrag für mittelalterliche Baukunst. Später a.o.Prof., o.Prof. Rektor der Hochschule, erbaute Ferstel Kirchen, Kapellen, Rathäuser, Villen und Wirtschaftsgebäude in verschiedenen Orten Österreich-Ungarns. 1921 wurde er zum Hofrat, 1923 zum Ehrenmitglied der Wiener Akademie der bildenden Künste ernannt. Ferstel, übernahm 1883 das Atelier seines Vaters und erhielt 1892 an der TH Wien einen Lehrauftrag für mittelalterliche Baukunst. Später a.o.Prof., o.Prof. Rektor der Hochschule, erbaute Ferstel Kirchen, Kapellen, Rathäuser, Villen und Wirtschaftsgebäude in verschiedenen Orten Österreich-Ungarns. 1921 wurde er zum Hofrat, 1923 zum Ehrenmitglied der Wiener Akademie der bildenden Künste ernannt. - Geboren im polnischen Stryszow, studierte Niedzielski (1849-1901) an der technischen Hochschule in Wien bei Heinrich Frh. von Ferstel, brachte im Sinne seines Lehrers die Restaurierung der Wiener Schottenkirche zum Abschluß und errichtete als Mitinhaber der Firma Miksch & Niedzielski mehrere Villen sowie private und auch öffentliche Gebäude, darunter die Marienbader Kolonnaden, das Kurhaus und die Sparkasse in Reichenberg.
