‎L'Exil et le Royaume. nouvelles. - [PRESENTATION-COPY FOR HENRY HELL]‎

‎(Paris), Gallimard, (1957). Bound with the original printed wrappers in beautiful, elegant emerald green full morocco binding with gilt line-decoration in various heights and distances to boards and spine as well as vertical gilt lettering to spine. Top edge gilt. Binding signed A. Coutret. Wrapper a bit soiled, mostly the back wrapper. Otherwise very nice and clean. Paper evenly browned due to the paper quality. Gilt super ex-libris to inside of front board.‎

‎First edition, Service de Presse-copy (""S. P."" punctured to bottom of back wrapper) - with signed presentation-inscription for Henry Hell to half-title - of Camus' great collection of stories, which are considered among the best of his works. Together, these stoires cover the entire variety of existentialism - or absurdism. There is general consensus that the clearest manifestation of the ideals of Camus can be found in the present work. Henry Hell, a psudonym for José-Henri Lasry, was a law student in Algiers, where he met Camus and acted for the Théatre du Travail. He was a literary critic for several periodicals, and he reviewed sevearl of Camus' works. He is the author of ""Francis Poulenc, musicien francais"", and he later worked for a publishing house in Paris.‎

‎"CAMUS, ALBERT.‎

‎L'Été. Les essais LXVIII. - [PRESENTATION-COPY WITH A MOST SPLENDID PROVENANCE]‎

‎Paris, Gallimard, 1954. Uncut in the original printed wrappers. Excellent copy.‎

‎First edition, Service de presse-copy, i.e. review-copy (""S.P"" to bottom of title-page and to verso of back wrapper), with an excellent presentation-inscription, of Camus' magnificent and highly influential collection of essays entitled ""Summer"". The copy is inscribed to Camus' close friend and ally in numerous respects, Jean Paulhan: ""a Jean Paulhan/ en affectueuse pensée/ Albert Camus"" on half-title. The famous French writer, literary critic and publisher Jean Paulhan (1884-1964) shared many things with Camus, with whom he grew very close. Not only did he participate actively in the publication of Camus' first books by Gallimard, was one of the first to see the true value of Camus' ""The Stranger"", he was also a confidante of Camus, who considered Paulhan one of the main reasons that he became a proper author. In a letter to Paulhan dated September 17, 1952, at the moment of break with Sartre, Camus writes: ""Ever since I (thanks to you) became what is called an author, I have not ceased to be astonished by my brethren. Sometimes, it is true, in the sense of admiration. Today it is in another sense."" (Depuis que je suis devenu (en peu grâce à vous) ce qu'on apelle écrivain, je n'ai pas cessé d'être étonné par mes confrères. Parfois dans le sens de l'admiration, il est vrai. Aujourd'hui c'est dans un autre sens.).Paulhan was an early and active member of the French Resistance, director of the literary magazine Nouvelle Revue Française (NRF) (from 1925 to 1940 and again from 1946 to 1968) and a great translator of Malagasy poetry, which attracted the interest of the likes of Guillaume Apollinaire and Paul Éluard. He also wrote numerous works of literary criticism, ""The Flowers of Tarbes, or Terror in Literature"" (1941) probably being the most famous, and he wrote several autobiographical short stories. After the war, Paulhan he founded ""Cahiers de la Pléiade"", and in 1953 he re-launched NRF.Interestingly, especially in connection with Camus' famous essays in ""L'été"", which are devoted entirely to his beloved Algiers, Paulhan was loudly against independence for Algeria. He caused great controversy by opposing independence and supporting the French military during the Algerian War. This not only caused public problems for him, it also cost him on the personal front, as for instance Maurice Blanchot denounced him. The essays in ""L'été"" are devoted to Algiers and represent a very personal side of Camus, who provides a marvelous poetic and humorous picture of the provincial simplicities of Oran and Algiers. For many Camus-devotees, ""L'Été"" constitutes one of the most beloved works, as it gives the feel of a certain intimacy with the author that few of his other works does. ""In ""Return to Tipasa"", perhaps the most confessional essay in ""Summer"", which dates from a long trip to Algeria in December 1952, Camus issues his now famous testimony of survival - ""In the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me lay an invincible summer"" (Hawes: Camus, A Romance, 2009, pp. 181-82).‎

‎First edition, Service de presse-copy, i.e. review-copy (""S.P"" to bottom of title-page and to verso of back wrapper), of Camus' magnificent and highly influential collection of essays entitled ""Summer"", inscribed to the famous critic of literature and drama, the writer Guy Dumur (1921-1991): ""à Guy Dumur/ l'une des/ [ÉTÉ]s [ÉTÉ being printed an L' crossed out in front, with s added in Camus' hand]/ son vieil et fidele ami/ Albert Camus"" on half-title.The younger Guy Dumur was a close friend of Camus, who hired him to work on ""Combat"" with him. It is reported that he had a great talent for discovering new talent. Since childhood, he was extremely passionate about the theatre and came to work with all the great dramatic figures in Paris at the time. He is also famous for a number of well respected novels. Over the course of the Cuban Revolution, Che came to understand the importance of media coverage in achieving his goals; La Revista Bohemia was one such media outlet. ‎"Che" Guevara [i.e. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna], Marxist revolutionary, major figure of the Cuban Revolution (1928-1967).‎

‎Autograph letter signed. Sierra Maestra, 12. IV. 1957.‎

‎4to. 1 leaf. Previously unpublished letter from Che's hideout in the Sierra Maestra mountains. Just six months before, Che landed in Cuba alongside Fidel Castro. He was one of the few who survived the initial battle which killed most of his companions before they were able to flee and begin to build a network of guerrilla revolutionaries. - Addressed to "Eliodoro", Che's letter is preoccupied with the basic necessities of warfare and survival, including the common military difficulty of clothing an army. Che is working on setting up textile manufacturing in the remote countryside: "Estamos trabajando con Manuela para la ubicación y confección de la textilera. Estuvimos discutiendo igualmente la calidad de los insumos para ello, es decir, tela, hilo, cuero, etc." He stresses the vital importance of this endeavour: "Se hace sumamente necesario la agilización de esta situación ya que la gente se enemente casi desnuda". He asks that Eliodoro and Manuela work together, with their local knowledge and connections, to make this happen: "agilizan el proceso, estoy seguro jue dará sus frutos". Signed, as always, simply "Che". - The fellow revolutionaries named are likely local farmers or workers in the Sierra Maestra, with whom Che worked extensively during his time in there. Interestingly, a 1967 short film titled "Manuela" tells the story of a young woman in the Sierra Maestra who joins forces with the revolution, echoing the Manuela mentioned in this letter. - Lightly creased, minor chipping along edges. A rare glimpse of Che's life in the earliest months of the war.‎

Apert from a tiny tear (no loss) to the upper margin of the front wrapper, also internally near mint. Front free end-paper with a four-line inscription for ""René Baer"" signed ""Colette de Jouvenel"".‎

‎First edition - presentation-copy and one of 175 numbered copies on Hollande (premier papier), out of a total of 725 numbered copies - of Colette's fascinating novel ""Chéri"", published at the dawn of the roaring 20'ies. The scandalous novel, which portrays the love between an older woman and a much younger man, is partly inspired by Colette's own life, and is considered one of her very best works. Extremely controversial as a person, Colette has always been the object of fascination as well as controversy. In 1893, she married Henry Gauthier-Villars, who was already a famous author and publisher. He used the pen-name ""Willy"", under which Colette's famous first novels, the Claudine-stories, also appeared. Colette and Willy separated in 1906, with a final divorce in 1910. Colette is well known for the series of lesbian relationships she embarked upon after her separation. In 1912, however, she married Henry de Jouvenel, editor of Le Matin, and took his name. Not for her publications, but she clearly used it in her personal correspondence. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1924, however, due partly to her affair with her 16-year-old stepson, Bertrand de Jouvenel. Chéri is partly based upon her experiences with her much younger stepson. "" 'Me a feminist?' She scoffed in 1910. 'I'll tell you what the suffragettes deserve: the whip and the harem'. COLETTE is an intriguing and flamboyant figure. Born in Burgundy in 1873 she moved to Paris at the age of twenty with her husband the writer and critic Henry Gauthiers-Viller (Willy). Forcing Colette to write, Willy published her novels in his name and the Claudine series became an instant success. She escaped her exploitative first husband to live by her pen and work in music-halls as a dancer. Colette had a lesbian love affair with a niece of Napoleon's, she married three times, had a baby at 40 and at 47, preferring 'passion to goodness', she seduced her teenage stepson. In the meantime she wrote stunning novels that were admired by Proust and Gide -- Gigi, Sido, Cheri, and Break of Day. Colette lived to be over 80. She was the first woman President of the Academie Goncourt and was the first woman in France to be accorded a state funeral."" ""Colette, in full Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, (1873 - 1954), outstanding French writer of the first half of the 20th century whose best novels, largely concerned with the pains and pleasures of love, are remarkable for their command of sensual description. Her greatest strength as a writer is an exact sensory evocation of sounds, smells, tastes, textures, and colours of her world. Her best work was produced after 1920 and followed two veins. The first vein followed the lives of the slightly depraved, postwar younger generation. Among these novels are Chéri (1920) and La Fin de Chéri (1926" The Last of Chéri), dealing with a liaison between a young man (Chéri) and an older woman... (Encycl. Britt.). René Baer (1887 - 1962) was a famous French author, journalist, playwright, and songwriter. Georges Leroux (1922-1999) was one of the most accomplished and esteemed French binders of the twentieth century. Before he became a book binder, in 1959, he was a poet. His works are known for their exotic materials, use of metallic effects and strong polychromatic color.‎

‎"GONCOURT, EDMOND et JULES de.‎

‎En 18.. - [ONE OF 84 COPIES - GEORGE SAND'S COPY]‎

‎Paris, 1851. Contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Internally brownspotted (due to the paper quality). A page has been inserted on to the half-title, on which is explained, in a neat late 19th century hand, that the present copy is that of George Sand and that it comes from the sale of her belongings. The rest of the page contains bibliographical information on the work. Nice copy.‎

‎The extremely scarce first edition, one of merely 84 copies that were not destroyed, of the first work by the Goncourt brothers - the work that laid the basis for their unique joint authorship. The famous brothers Edmond (1822-96) and Jules (1830-70) Goncourt played a unique role in 19th century French intellectual life. Together they developed a distinctive impressionistic style, called ""écriture artiste"""" their works are furthermore of great importance to the understanding of literary and social life of the period. They seminally influenced the naturalism and realism of 19th century literature - in the words of Émile Zola, they ""provided a new sense of nature"". The remarkable symbiosis in their collaboration, continuing to write as one until the death of Jules, has gone down in history as one of the most remarkable literary collaborations ever. They are considered aesthetes of the highest rank and were known as great collectors of art. They were also known to be highly neurotic and utterly misogynist. During the Second Empire they frequented the salon of Princess Mathilde and took part in the famous 'dîners Magny', the fortnightly gatherings that brought together leading men (and George Sand!) of letters and science at a Paris restaurant in the 1860'ies. In his will, Edmond left the entire Goncourt fortune to found the ""Académie Goncourt"", which began in 1903, when the prestigious Prix Goncourt was also founded. Their first work, ""En 18.."", was printed in 1000 copies, but it was confiscated by the censors and was burnt by the authors. Consequently, a mere 84 copies survived and the work is thus of the utmost scarcity. ""Cet ouvrage, qui a été tire à 1000 exemplaires, a été brûlé par les auteurs"" il n'existerait dans le commerce que 84 exemplaires donnés ou vendus."" (Carteret).""Premiers ouvrage des Goncourt, très rare, dont le manuscrit a subi des suppressions avant l'impression de l'edition de Bruxelles."" [the Brussels edition being the second edition, printed in 1884]. (Carteret). George Sand and the Goncourt brothers moved in the same intellectual and literary circles, were invited to the same places, the same salons, and had many friends in common. All three were seminal in determining the course of naturalistic writing of the 19th century. Interestingly, also George Sand began her literary career in as a collaboration, in a liaison with the writer Jules Sandeau. They published a few stories in collaboration, signing them ""Jules Sand"", before she began writing on her own. Carteret I:349. (listing a copy of the first edition sold in 1918 at 160 fr.).‎
