Morel, agreeing to perform at a soirée but asking him to be discreet about the agreed musicians' fee, as he "no longer performs on these terms": "Je me suis absenté de Paris plusieurs jours de la semaine dernière et n'ai pu répondre de suite à votre lettre. Je pense être libre pour votre soirée du 24 Janvier, et serai très heureux de me retrouver avec vous et de vous être agréable ; seulement, je vous serai obligé de ne pas dire ailleurs le prix du cachet que vous me donnez, car je ne chante plus dans ces conditions. Les frais de voyage et d'hôtel seront à votre charge en dehors du cachet [...]". - At the time of the letter, Auguez was part of the ensemble of the Paris Opéra. From 1883 to 1884 he sang in Rome and Antwerp before returning to Paris and varying but quite successful engagements. From 1899 onwards, Auguez devoted himself to teaching at the Conservatory and at the École Niedermeyer. - Well preserved.

Aurèle, Adrien Dupin, French actor (fl. 1858-1874).

Interesting letter to the actor Louis Péricaud, offering him 40 francs, train tickets and dinner to play the character Rodin in "The Wandering Jew", likely an adaptation of Eugène Sue's 1844 novel, in Chartres: "Je vous donnerai 40 fr. et vous paierai notre voyage aller retour en 2ème plus notre dîner le dimanche 25 octobre prochain à Chartres pour y venir jouer le rôle de Rodin dans : Le Juif errant. Nous répéterons lundi, je vous ferai connître l'heure [...]". - While Adrien Dupin Aurèle is largely forgotten, the recipient Louis Péricaud (1835-1909) was one of the great French comic actors of his time. In 1872, Péricaud established himself in Paris after touring in the French province for many years. He was engaged at the Folies-Dramatiques, then at the Théâtre de Cluny, and at the famous Théâtre de l'Ambigu, where Adrien Dupin Aurèle had played before. From 1891, Péricaud was a close collaborator of Coquelin aîné, first at the Porte Saint-Martin and subsequently at the Gaîté-Lyrique. - With two minor tears and bent corners.

Together 6½ pp. The longest letter in the collection is to refuse an invitation to the countryside due to professional obligations in Paris: "Mon regret est vif de ne pouvoir répondre selon votre désir à la demande que vous m'avez fait transmettre par mon amie Mme Rodocanachi, me voici prise par un très long travail et de tout l'hiver je ne devrai pas m'absenter de Paris. [...]". - The lettercard is an invitation to her friend Marguerite Amillet: "Si vous pouvez ma chère migonne venez demain Jeudi à 5½". As Bertet uses the same nickname "Mignonne" on the visiting card to thank her for flowers, it is likely that Marguerite Amillet was the recipient. - In a short letter dated "Lundi 19", Bertet asks a Mr Picard, possibly the dramatist André Picard, for a box seat in the theatre for that night: "Je voudrais bien avoir pour ce soir une loge n'importe laquelle mais comme je ne puis aller au théâtre, voulez vous avoir l'obligéance de la demander pour moi, de la glisser dans l'enveloppe ci jointe et de la faire porter immédiatement". - Minimal browning and stains. Je trouve que je ne peux pas laisser Rob tout seul avec les soucis et tracas qu'amène la fabrication d'un film […]" (Paris, 21. VIII., o. J.). - Erfreut über ihren Aufenthalt in Rom im Zusammenhang mit Dreharbeiten, die jedoch nur langsam voranschreiten, da der Produzent noch nicht alle vertraglichen Details geklärt habe: "Nous sommes ravis d'être à Rome. Nous nous sommes habitués à son rythme. Il fait beau et c'est gai. Le film avance lentement à cause du producteur qui n'avait pas entièrement son affaire en poche en signant les contrats mais enfin on se laisse vivre sans trop de peine ici [...]" (Rom, 11. VI., o. J.). - Über die bevorstehende Eheschließung ihrer Tochter Tiny mit einem Maler: "Grande nouvelle! Tiny se marie le 12 Juin [...] Son 'futur' est intelligent et bien, et gentil. Je crois que c'est dans une huitaine de jours que Robert m'amenera à Paris mais hélas pas encore chez moi [...] C'est long, ces histoires de coeur [...]" (Clinique des Alpes, 7. 8vo and 12mo. Together 6 pp. on bifolia. The dated letter was sent to a M. Nègre with an order of "six litres of lavender water. 3 litres of very good rose water. 4° a small tinplate pot with good jasmin-pomade. 5° a larger flacon of jasmine essence" and an apology for charging Nègre "always with a thousand annoyances" (transl.). Agar apparently knew this perfume merchant well, as the letter is very personal in nature: "I do not know if I will have the pleasure to see you this winter, my return to the Comédie-Française will most likely keep me from going so far. Voilà, my regrets because I had so much sympathy for your admirable country that it is not without sadness that I have to renounce it". In closing, she invites the recipient to dinner in Paris and sends greetings to his wife. - The second letter probably dates to 1877/78, as it bears a reference to the role of Agrippina in Racine's "Britannicus", which Agar successfully performed at the Comédie-Française upon her return in 1878. The short letter was written to her "Cher et Illustre Maître", possibly the director of the Comédie, with an ultimatum for her return to the stage: "Alas! I cannot see it coming!! and I will not leave you alone so that you torment them, because time passes and we do not rehearse and we will play in the heat and we will not make money and we will be kicked out and and and... I would have committed [?] to the 4 volumes. Our minister is too good [...], finally I want to play, arrange yourself as you wish. This is my ultimatum!! - I am forever devoted and grateful to you. Your Agrippina that dies from not dying every evening". - Agar was ostracized from the stage of the Comédie for over six years because of her participation in a concert that had been organized by the government of the Paris Commune on 6 May 1871. Her return was triumphant; however, when she was not named Sociétaire by the end of 1878, Agar turned her back on the Comédie-Française until 1885. The not entirely clear reference to a minister in the letter might be in connection with the political aspect of the affair. - The letter to Nègre on stationery of a theatre or theatre school "Représentations du répertoire classique - (5e année)". An den bedeutenden Antiquar Joseph Baer mit einer Kundenanfrage: "Zu einem literarischen Zweck suche ich schon seit geraumer Zeit nach einer historischen Quelle über den 1616 in Frankfurt a. M. hingerichteten Vincenz Fettmilch. Ich habe durch die Güte des Herrn F. M. Heberle in Köln ein Schriftchen erhalten, welches die Verhandlungen der Zünfte mit dem Rath der Stadt Frankfurt und dem Kaiser Matthias aus dem Jahre 1612 und 1614 mittheilt; dagegen aber fehlt mir jeder Nachweis über die öffentlichen Ereignisse jener Zeit. Es ist mir unbekannt, ob Lersner's Chronik von Frankfurt darüber Auskunft enthält [...]". - Ernst Dronke veröffentlichte 1846 sein wohl wichtigstes Buch "Berlin", worin er die Auswirkungen der beginnenden Industrialisierung auf die Großstadt thematisierte. In Folge seiner darin getätigten Äußerungen wurde er zu zwei Jahren Haft in der Festung Wesel verurteilt, konnte allerdings während der Revolution nach Brüssel fliehen, wo er Friedrich Engels und Karl Marx kennenlernte. Dronke begleitete diese 1848 von Paris nach Köln und arbeitete mit an der "Neuen Rheinischen Zeitung". - Mit Sammlernotiz in Blei.

Together 10 pp. Interesting collection of documents that connect Théodore Botrel to the nationalist politician Paul Déroulède and to the large trial before the French Senate against Déroulède and other anti-Dreyfusard activists following the failed coup of 23 February 1899. - In a letter concerning the organisation of a concert with a recipient referred to as "Mon Père", Botrel remarks that he will "go to the high court as a witness", in "great Breton costume, vest, bragoù bras, and gaiters", in order to represent "loyal Brittany that protests with my voice against the ignominies of the present hour!" (transl.). The letter can thus be dated to the 1899 trial against Paul Déroulède and his co-conspirators. Apparently, Botrel had been called to appear as a witness by the accused journalist and militant royalist Raoul de Fréchencourt who was eventually acquitted. In an undated letter to a prisoner named Raoul, very likely Fréchencourt, Botrel encourages him to call him to the stand, even though Déroulède had asked Botrel not to support him in public: "Do not hesitate to make me appear as a witness in the Déroulède affair. You know that I want to sing for him, that I want to make him even more popular through the Chanson du Peuple [...]. At the same time, Déroulède himself made me promise not to appear by his side, never to recite my verses, to sing my works, especially in Breton costume [...] out of fear that it would compromise him in his popular republican reunions. Nevertheless, Déroulède loves me, he told me so, he much values me (and this is a great honour for me) as a poet!" In this letter, Botrel also mentions the second conviction of Alfred Dreyfus on 9 September 1899, expressing his antisemitic views: "The judgment of Rennes is not the solution to the terrible crisis in which our poor country finds itself, but it is a triumph for the army, a blow to the stateless, to the cosmopolitans, and to the Jews". - The manuscript in the collection is Botrel's "Ballade de L'Ankou", which explores a theme of Breton mythology. Underneath the title, Botrel quotes Anatole Le Braz's "La Légende de la mort en Basse-Bretagne": "The Ankou is, in Brittany, the masculine personification of death". A single correction suggests that the manuscript at hand was the final draft of the poem that was published in "Contes du Lit-Clos" (Paris, 1900, p. 63). - On 27 June 1897, Botrel congratulates an unnamed recipient "on the occasion of the great honour given to our service in the person of its chef [...]". The undated postcard was written to the organizer of a charity concert with Botrel and his wife Léna. The two identical concert programmes with a photograph of Botrel in uniform point to his patriotic concerts in support of the French troops during World War I. - The manuscript is taped, with minor browning, and very slightly creased. The letter probably to Raoul de Fréchencourt shows ink stains.

8vo and 4to. Together 3 pp. With an autograph envelope. In French. Two humorous letters to the American professor of French literature and film, Bruce Morrissette. In the letter from 1956, Bataille praises Morrissette's book "La Bataille Rimbaud : l'affaire de la Chasse spirituelle", an investigation of the literary scandal surrounding Nicolas Bataille's and Akakia-Viala's forgery of the prose poem "La Chasse spirituelle" attributed to Rimbaud. The poem was originally mentioned by Paul Verlaine, who claimed to have forgotten its manuscript in Paris when leaving the capital for Brussels to reunite with Rimbaud in 1873. It is disputed among scholars whether "La Chasse spirituelle" ever existed, but it soon gained legendary status as Rimbaud's lost masterpiece. On 19 May 1949, the journalist and forger Pascal Pia published excerpts of the supposed text of "La Chasse spirituelle". André Breton exposed the forgery in July 1949, naming Bataille and Akakia as its probable authors, who admitted to having concocted a pastiche. In this charming letter, Bataille jokingly offers forgeries of "Claudel, Faulkner, or perhaps a faux Dostoyevsky" for Morrissette's future academic work and inquires when he will return to Montmartre: "FORMIDABLE ! Merci, cher Bruce c'est vraiment un très beau livre et quel travail ! Maintenant que voulez-vous ? Un faux Claudel, Faulkner, ou peut-être un faux Dostoievski ? Quand revenez-vous à Montmartre que nous puissions comploter quelque chose d'amusant. En attendant, je vais aller voir Nizet - s'il ne veut pas éditer 'the great Bruce Forgery' [...]". - In the typed letter that was supposedly written from Panama, Bataille announces a trip to Arizona together with Akakia, for research on the Apache tribe. He asks Morrissette for literature on the Apaches and their reservations, as it is easier in Paris and the American libraries to obtain a book "on the fabrication of Lucky Strikes than on the method of scalping Mr Pascal Pia!". This is another referece to the Rimbaud scandal; while Bataille probably did research on Apache customs and crafts for a project, asking Morrissette specifically for books "with many photos or illustrated plates because we also need such documents for decorations and costumes", it is unlikely that he actually went to Arizona.

In a brief letter, De Max announces his departure for Monte Carlo together with his stage partner Sarah Bernhardt, with apologies to the recipient: "Je pars avec Sarah pour Monte-Carlo Lundi et nous ne rentrons que le 12. Croyez bien à tout mon vrai regret". - The longer letter concerns a forthcoming poetry recital organized by a M. Mendès, very likely the author and playwright Catull Mendès. De Max asks Kahn to relate to Mendès that he agrees to "La misère humaine" but would prefer to recite Victor Hugo's "Les Djinns" over Lord Byron's "Mazeppa": "Voulez vous avoir la bonté de dire à Mr Mendès que c'est entendu pour 'La misère humaine' mais qu'a la place de 'Mazeppa' je désirais dire 'Les Djinns' trouvant ce dernier poème plus dans mes cordes. À mon grand regret je ne puis rester à la répétition. Envoyez-moi un mot et le poème des 'Djinns'. Merci mon ami grand. Votre vieux dévoué". - While there is no established link between Édouard de Max and either Gustave Kahn or Catull Mendès, the two authors were indeed friends, making the identification plausible. - The letter concerning Mendès minimally creased.

To the son of the linguist and dramatist Louis Poinsinet de Sivry (1733-1804), concerning a complaint by the recipient who had been erroneously struck from the "liste des entrées gratuites" at the Comédie-Française. Lafon relates that he immediately brought Sivry's complaint before the "assemblée du répertoire", which univocally decided to "repair the error that had been commited by the ushers". A letter of complaint by Sivry was "read out and heard with the greatest interest", which, according to Lafon, determined the success of his cause. The interesting letter in full: "Aussitôt votre lettre reçue je me suis rendu à l'assemblée du répertoire pour lui faire part de votre juste réclamation. Toutes les voix s'étaient réunies pour faire réparer promptement l'erreur que les contrôleurs avaient commis et lorsque les semainiers sont arrivés portant de différentes lettres adressées au théâtre français. La votre, Monsieur, a été lue et entendue avec le plus vif intérêt. Si votre cause avait pu être douteuse dans son succès, assurément, Monsieur, vous l'auriez déterminé par la manière dont vous avez rédigé votre requête. La comédie s'est rendue à l'évidence de votre droit, et je l'ai vue enchantée de prouver son estime au fils de Monsieur de Sivry. J'avais réclamé l'honneur d'être immédiatement auprès de vous l'interprète de ses sentiments ; mais elle a pensé qu'elle vous devait elle-même sa réparation, et notre secrétaire doit vous avoir annoncé que vous êtes rétabli sur la liste des entrées". - Pierre Lafon was one of the most popular actors of tragic roles at the Comédie-Française in the years following his debut in 1800, even outshining his rival François-Joseph Talma. To the author of an unidentified treatise on military education entitled "Trésor fécond de principes, de vues, de sentimens incontestables", praising it in the highest terms and commenting on the text: "Je Vous restitue Monsieur, avec regrét, n'ayant put m'en pouvoir ici, et reconnaissance Votre incomparable Ouvrage [...], ou tout ce qui était à dire est exposé avec une sagacité, une propriété de termes, une facilité qui le met à la portée d'un chacun et électrise en même tems la raison et le cœur de quiconque le lit [...]". - Luigi Giuseppe Arbario di Gattinara originally envisaged an army career, having reached the rank of a captain of the infantry when he was convinced by the Sardinian minister of external affairs to accept a diplomatic mission to Naples in 1782. In 1786 he was named ambassador to the Imperial court in Vienna, where he served until 1794. After his return to Turin, the Marquess served as councillor to the Sardinian King and took public office in the Napoleonic Italian Republic in 1802. He assisted in the coronation of Napoleon as King of Italy in 1805, whose state council he joined. In 1809 Napoleon named Arbario di Gattinara senator of the Kingdom of Italy. During the restoration, the Marquess withdrew to private life, dedicating his time to political and economical studies. - On stationery with engraved letterhead "Le Senteur Comte de Breme, Grand Dignitaire de l'Ordre de la Couronne de Fer". With recipient's or collector's note in ink. Well preserved.

Trotz größter Mühe sei es Herpert nicht möglich gewesen, Ergebnisse mit dem von Clauß eingesandten Gemäldekatalog zu erzielen; zudem habe sich das Interesse von alten Gemälden ab- und modernerer Malerei der französischen Schule hingewandt: "Je regrette de devoir vous renvoyer comme vous me l'avez remis, le catalogue de vos tableaux. J'ai passé l'été à Londres et je me suis donné la peine [...] afin d'arriver à un résultat quelconque, mais le mauvais état des affaires en général et les affaires d'art en particulier m'a empêché de réussir. Ensuite le gout pour les tableaux anciens à fait place à celui des tableaux modernes surtout de l'école Française. Une autre année nous serons peut-être plus heureux [...]". - Der kgl. hannoversche Generalkonsul Clauss war passionierter Autographen- und Gemäldesammler. To a lawyer named Malandain, urging him to take action in an affair concerning a widow named Jullien, as it impedes Constant's payment by a C. Arnault, whom he accuses of "misrepresenting his fortune" in order to "frustrate his creditors". Constant sees his interests at risk: "Je comptais avec certitude sur une réponse à ma dernière lettre. Vous me mandiez dans votre précédente que vous déviez revoir la veuve Jullien le 14, & nous sommes au 30. Je vous prie instamment de presser l'issue de cette affaire. Je vous répète ce que je vous ai mandé précédemment. Cette affaire seule m'empêche d'être payé de C. Arnault, que j’ai raison de croire occupé à dénaturer sa fortune, pour frustrer ses créanciers. Vous voiez combien de plus longs retards seroient préjudiciables à mes intérêts". - The second part of the letter concerns another ongoing affair concerning compensation payments by a Mr. Coquereaumont. Constant suspects that his adversary has moved without indicating his new address: "J'ai écrit de nouveau à mon ci-devant homme d'affaires mais son silence me fait croire qu'il a changé domicile. Je vous ai expliqué, Citoyen, ce qu'il m'avait mandé relativement aux réparations de Coquereaumont. Il se trouvait qu'il m'ait transmis des détails erronés, et qu'il eut consenti des réparations, ce qui doit pouvoir le constater par un acte signé de lui, [...]". - The great thinker and politician Constant was notoriously short of cash throughout his life. In 1816 he fell out with his long-term partner Madame de Staël, not least due to his gambling debts; towards the end of his life King Louis Philip I provided him with a large sum to settle his debts. - With recipient's note in ink and tears from breaking the seal. An die Redaktion der "Rhein- und Mosel-Zeitung" mit dem Angebot seiner Dienste für eine Erweiterung des Korrespondenz-Repertoires in Richtung Schweiz: "Die Rhein- und Mosel-Zeitung erhält dadurch einen besonderen Werth, daß sie nicht selten interessante Korrespondenz-Nachrichten mittheilt. Aus der Schweiz liest man jedoch in derselben nichts Eigenthümliches. Diese Lücke könnte ich, ihr Züricher Korrespondent des deutschen Couriers, deßen Beiträge in der Regel von diversen Morgen-Zeitungen nachgedruckt werden ausfüllen helfen [...]". - Der gebürtige Brüsseler Coremans war in den 1820er Jahren wegen Aufruhrs aus Wien verbannt worden und hatte die "Erlanger Zeitung" herausgegeben. Anfang der 1830er Jahre editierte Coremans in München die radikale Nürnberger Zeitung "Die freie Presse", wofür er mit Strafen belegt und eingesperrt wurde. Im Gefängnis schrieb er mit einigem Erfolg drei deutschsprachige Bücher, "Die Stimme aus dem Kerker", "Kerkerblumen" und "Die göttlichen Befreier". In the letter, Filomarino della Rocca thanks his subordinate for Christmas wishes and offers his own in return: "Je vous remercie des vœux, que vous avez bien voulu faire pour moi. Agréez a votre tour ceux, que je fais pour vous, et pour tout ce qui peut vous interesser [...]". In the note, the vice legate asks Vigne to return a document to a Carmelite friar. - Avignon was ruled by Papal legates since 1433, thirty years after the last antipope Benedict XIII had been expelled from the city. From 1542, vice legates took over the actual administration of the enclave. Pope Alexander VIII was the last legate of Avignon at his death in 1691, as the rule of Avignon was subsequently shifted to the vice legates. Jacques Filomarino della Rocca served as the penultimate vice legate of Avignon before its annexation by revolutionary France in 1790/91. - The letter shows a tear from breaking the seal. The letter is to remind the recipient of his duty to ask officially for recognition of his inheritance and to swear an oath of allegiance before the Apostolic chamber of the Comtat Venaissin in Carpentras within a certain period that was nearing its end. In view of the old age and infirmities of the recipient, Filomarino della Rocca offers him to just sign the oath instead of having to go to Carpentras: "Remonte que par le decés de Messire Jean François Betrand de Pelissier son frère la terre et seigneurie d'Eyrolles au Comtat Venaissin a passé sur sa tête sans qu'il aye encore prêté hommage à la R[évéren]de Chambre. Le tems porté pour le droit est sur le point d'expirer, et à même peut-être expiré. L'age du supliant [!] et ses infirmités l'ont empêché de se rendre en la ville de Carpentras pour y prêter hommage [...]". - The Comtats Venaissin and Avignon were ruled by the Papal legates of Avignon since 1433, thirty years after the last antipope Benedict XIII had been expelled from the city. Oblong folio. 1 p. Mounted on parchment. Passport for a pilgrimage from Avignon to Rome issued to the farrier Joseph Deville, aged 25 years. Several notes and a signature by local authorities, including two stamps, attest to the pilgrimage. On 4 April Deville passed through Loreto, finally reaching Rome on 26 April 1783. - Avignon was ruled by Papal legates since 1433, thirty years after the last antipope Benedict XIII had been expelled from the city. From 1542, vice legates took over the actual administration of the enclave. Pope Alexander VIII was the last legate of Avignon at his death in 1691, as the rule of Avignon was subsequently shifted to the vice legates. Highly interesting letter offering a contemporary view on the Italian occultist and impostor Giuseppe Balsamo (1743-95), better known as Count Alessandro di Cagliostro, in the immediate aftermath of his arrest in Rome on 27 December 1789. After apologizing for not writing earlier, as he had to respond to "heaps of annoying Christmas wishes" that occupy secretaries such as himself, "nihil agendo", Fogli relates what he knows about Cagliostro's imprisonment in Rome and the reaction of the populace: "Mr. Cagliostro, who caused so much commotion in France, nevertheless continues to be imprisoned in Castel Sant'Angelo surrounded by guards, who have been doubled by order of His Holiness, which demonstrates that his crime is not just a bagatelle. What did he think he was doing? Will Rome be as agitated as France is said to have been? That is what the eager Roman people are expecting; the cafés and houses are filled with chatter, but in reality it has not yet been possible to understand the true cause of the imprisonment of this illustrious impostor" (transl.). - Giuseppe Balsamo was born into a poor Palermitan family that provided him with a good education. Around 1760 he started a novitiate in the convent of the Fatebenefratelli in Caltragirone. Serving as the assistant to the monastery's pharmacist, Balsamo received basic medical and pharmacological training but was eventually expelled from the convent for misconduct. In 1764 he defrauded a goldsmith posing as an occultist and fled to Malta. There, he first introduced himself as Count Cagliostro before the Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, who employed him as a pharmacist. According to Cagliostro's claims, he subsequently travelled to Greece, Egypt, and Persia and was initiated to ancient masonic rites and alchemical knowledge during his journey. In 1768, he worked briefly as secretary to Cardinal Orsini in Rome, soon moving on with his wife and the forger Agliato to London, Courland, Poland, and Germany, among other destinations. After a failed attempt to win the patronage of Catherine the Great, who had received warning, they abruptly left St Petersburg for Strasbourg in 1780. France proved a more fertile ground for Cagliostro's schemes. His growing reputation as an occultist, freemason and healer earned him an invitation to Paris by Cardinal Rohan in 1785, where he received a warm welcome at the court. Soon after his arrival, however, Cagliostro was prosecuted in the infamous Affair of the Diamond Necklace, which involved Marie Antoinette and Cardinal Rohan. Cagliostro was eventually acquitted under the condition of permanently leaving France. During a 1789 visit to Rome, Cagliostro was arrested by the Inquisition on suspicion of trying to start a masonic lodge. Initially condemned to death, his sentence was reduced to life in prison at Forte di San Leo, where he died in 1795. - According to a later note, the letter was addressed to Archbishop Alessandro Alessandretti (1738-1815). - Traces of folds. In this interesting letter, Aurelio investigates whether Guido was willing to sell, lend, or gift the horse to him, as he was about to accompany Duke Cosimo I de' Medici on a voyage and was thus in "great need" of "a safe one". Curiously, Fregoso calls the horse "il gacho" - a rare Spanish term for a type of horse or mare. Piero Machiavelli's service in the navy of Philip II of Spain might account for his terminology. - Aurelio Fregoso was the illegitimate son of Ottaviano Fregoso (1479-1524), the 44th Doge of the Republic of Genoa. Niccolò Machiavelli lauded Ottaviano Fregoso as an ideal ruler, and Baldassare Castiglione made him one of the interlocutors in "The Book of the Courtier", and thus the embodiment of an ideal courtier. Just as Niccolò Machiavelli's youngest son Piero, Aurelio Fregoso became a respected and successful condottiere. As such he was involved in the unsuccessful defence of Siena against Florence (1553-55) and thereafter took service with Duke Cosimo I de' Medici. He also accepted commands for Emperor Maximilian and was active as a diplomat. - With a note of the recipient Guido Machiavelli referring to Fregoso's request. Traces of folds. Slightly stained. A legal document relating to the appointment of a procurator in connection with a voyage, hardly legible beyond the title of Fregoso: "Messieur Galleasse Fregoso gentilhomme Italien chev[alier] de l'ordre du roy et gentilh[omm]e ordi[air]e de sa chambre [...] de Venise faict constituer son procu[reu]r [...]". - Galeas Fregoso was a member of the important Genovese noble family that produced several doges, cardinals, and condottiere. He is first documented as one of the Italian noblemen accompanying Renée de France (1510-74) on her return from Ferrara to France. In France he entered the service King Charles IX, probably as a confidant of Catherine de' Medici. In 1572 he was charged with negotiations in Frankfurt with Louis of Nassau, who had raised an army in support of the Huguenots. - Counter-signed twice. With old water damage to the right margin, causing several tears that slightly affect the text.

An den Königlich Sächsischen Landtagsarchivar Adolf Segnitz mit der Bitte um Verkauf eines Lutherautographs: "Da Sie schon einmal die Güte hatten, mir eine von ihren Autographendoubletten abzulassen, so wende ich mich auch jetzt wieder, da ich Auftrag habe 2 Autogr. von Luther, diese nicht bloße Unterschriften, sondern wenigstens noch 1 Zeile andere Worte von seiner Hand dabei, an dieselben und erlaube mir die gehorsamste Frage, ob Sie mir wohl eine solche ablaßen können. Ich könnte Ihnen 2 Louisdor dafür offeriren [...]". - In den 1840er Jahren wurde Johann Graesse wegen seiner Sprach- und Literaturkenntnisse zum Privatbibliothekar des sächsischen Königs Friedrich August II. berufen. Von bleibendem Wert sind u. a. Graesses "Bibliotheca magica et pneumatica" (Leipzig 1843), eine Bibliographie über Veröffentlichungen zum Zauber-, Wunder- und Aberglauben unter Berücksichtigung von Hexen- und Teufelsliteratur, sowie seine "Bibliotheca psychologica" (Leipzig 1845). - Mit Sammlernotiz in Bleistift, Siegelrest und einem kleinen Tintenwischer. Ich wurde hierzu durch den Artikel vom 11. Mai im Sprechsaal angeregt, u. überlasse der geehrten Redaction beliebige Abkürzung [...]". - Die Leipziger Zeitung richtete nach der Märzrevolution von 1848 eine neue Rubrik "Sprechsaal" ein, wo nach Wegfallen der Zensur auch oppositionelle Meinungen gedruckt wurden (vgl. H.-D. Fischer, Deutsche Zeitungen des 17. bis 20. Jahrhunderts [1972], S. 87). - Leicht braunfleckig. Mit Sammlervermerk in Bleistift.

4to. 2 pp. In Spanish. Highly interesting letter to a Duke, probably of Hungarian origin, touching on a variety of subjects. More personal sections of the letter concern a mutual friend as Gualtieri relates that he "celebrates greatly the recovery of the Marquess" (transl.). This is followed by an outburst about "notes by Nuñez and Serrano" that concerned ongoing negotiations, probably in Turin: "Esto se llama tratar negocios con los pies. Querer aparentar una cosa para hacer otra. Nada de buena fe, nada de arreglo honroso, nada de posible sur remover los obstáculos [...]". Gualtieri's ire was directed particularly at a person named Madrazo, who is "the same today as he was 41 years ago". He compares Madrazo to "a viper that dies unless it bites three times a day" and a salamander "that lives in the fire". He further asks the recipient about the situation at home: "And the Hungarians? How are you, duke, my friend? That throne!" The letter was probably written during the Italian Revolution of 1831, as Gualtieri speculates: "Venice will fall, Turin will pay or Radetzky will go to Turin". Another political remark concerns the powerlessness of the Pope, probably Gregory XVI, who "will always limp" and cannot control the political course of Italy: "in all ways the matters take different directions". Gualtieri closes with a remark that he will "send two lines to the Fat Dwarf" ("Enano Gordo") and a request to the recipient to keep him informed about the Marquess mentioned above. - Carlo Avarna di Gualtieri was born into an ancient Sicilian noble family of Norman descent. He joined the newly installed court of King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilys in Palermo following his deposition from the Neapolitan throne by Napoleon in 1806. From 1810, Gualtieri presided over the royal treasury. He remained loyal to the King during the de-facto rule of Lord William Bentinck in 1812/13. This loyalty was awarded with the post of the Minister of the Interior (1813-15). From 1831 until his death, Gualtieri served as president of the council of the Kingdom of Sicily. - Bent along the left margin. With an old restoration and minor tears. Somewhat creased.

Wohlgeb. bin ich für die Sendung welche Sie die Güte hatten mir mit Ihrem geehrten Briefe [...] zugehen zu lassen sehr dankbar [...] bei Nr. 72. / Mitth. d. 1. Kammer / fehlte der letzte Bogen der mit pag 1423 beginnt [...] Es thut mir sehr leid, Sie deshalb nochmals zu beschweren [...]". - Haase wurde mit Schaffung des Sächsischen Landtags (1831) als Vertreter der Stadt Leipzig Abgeordneter der II. Kammer, musste im November 1848 sein Mandat aufgrund der Liberalisierung des Wahlrechts niederlegen und nahm es dann während der Regierung unter Ferdinand Zschinsky (1850) wieder auf. - Mit hs. Mit Korrekturangaben zu einer Transkription: "Das Wort S. 1 des Originals unten, nach 'Räuberhauptmann' ist allem Anschein nach 'Panther' zu lesen. / Das verwischte Wort auf S. 2 Lin. 6. heißt nicht: angebracht, sondern: umgebracht. / S. 3 Lin. 20 muß statt 'keines' gelesen werden: 'keine' [...] S. 4 Lin. 1 ist anstatt: Pfarrer zu lesen: Maurer (nämlich Freimaurer). / S. 4 Zeile 15 am Schluß bis Z. 17 sind so zu lesen: zu handeln, das kann ich ohne mitzustreiten [...] Auf der dritten Seite muß nach: 'die Freunde machen den Philosophen' statt 'Lebens' ohne Zweifel: 'Lenzens' gelesen werden. Es ist derselbe Lenz, welcher gleich nachher genannt wird [...]". - "Im Frankfurter Parlament stand [Haßler] auf der Seite des linken Zentrums, erwarb sich ein bleibendes Verdienst um die Redaktion der Protokolle, trat aber nach dem Scheitern der Idee eines deutschen konstitutionellen Erbkaisertums im April 1849 aus dem Parlament aus" (NDB VIII, 51f.). Manchester u. Umgegend gehe, um die mich zunächst betreffenden Gegenstände zu besichtigen u. daß ich zweifle, ob es mir vergönnt seyn würde, meine Tour bis Edinburg auszudehnen; ich muß daher verzichten, deine [...] interessante Reise mit zu machen [...]". - Friedrich von Hermann trat 1851 als Kommissar bei der großen Industrieausstellung "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations" in London auf und veröffentlichte einen ausführlichen Bericht über Wollwaren. 1848/49 war er Abgeordneter der Frankfurter Nationalversammlung gewesen.
