In 1967 Sijan was ejected from his fighter-bomber into the jungle of Laos. Although disable, he dragged himself for six weeks until his capture. He escaped, but upon his recapture was tortured, and revealed no military information. He died in Hanoi. His gallant struggle galvanized other American POWs to resist torture and brainwashing and Sijan was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. The city of Florence has a wealth of Latin inscriptions dating from the Middle Ages which hitherto have largely gone unexplored. In this volume the writer looks at the dedication inscription of the Palazzo del Podest? dating from 1255 AD. and begins a search for the identity of its author.
