A bright first edition copy of the second novel to ever feature baseball and the first to use baseball in the title and design of the book. William Everett was the cousin of Edward Everett Hale and the son of the orator Edward Everett. He wrote this book shortly after graduating from Harvard’s law department. He would return later to Harvard to teach latin. This book has two and a half chapters of baseball content. The first novel with baseball content was 1865"Uncle Nat; or The Good Time Which George and Frank Had Trapping Fishing Camping Out etc." by Alfred Oldfellow published two years earlier. A bright very good plus copy with some wear to head and heel of spine and a gift inscription from the year of publication 1868 on a preliminary page. Lea and Shepard unknown

The Allens would sell their trophy business in 1973 and move to Mundelein IL where they manufactured metal alloys and later in the late 1980’s shifted over to casting specialized funeral urns. Octavo four numbers bound in one volume each 20 pages plus the pictorial wrappers Number 4 is 32 pages including the wrappers with some illustrations mainly from photographs in each number. Binder's cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover; boards bowed particularly the rear one; in very good condition the contents are fine. The first number states it is 'the first issue . in its new form'. Bound with 'NZ Sports Car Club Bulletin' Volume 3 Number 2 December 1945 to Volume 3 Number 8 December 1947. Octavo seven issues each 16 to 20 pages plus the pictorial wrappers trimmed a little with the front covers slightly cropped; in near-fine condition. The editorial in the first post-war issue in December 1945 suggests there was a hiatus in publication during the war. Provenance: the ownership signature of 'E.J. Its tremendous appreciation in value over the last twenty years is an indication of how few copies indeed remain outside of permanent collections as well as how relentlessly it is still pursued by collectors. Near fine with a few light stains to margins of card. <br /> <br /> Very nice photo of a ball club from one of the hotbeds of women's baseball in the early 20th century. Evidence of women's teams in the state goes back to at least 1893 with photos documenting several competitive teams. We could not trace the name of this team but the ages of the women are early 20s suggesting a college amateur or perhaps church team. 1929 was an interesting time with softball gaining popularity nationwide and many women's teams transitioning from baseball. <br /> <br /> . unknown

Bifolium inscribed on four sides covering guests who stayed at the hotel in the first week of September including the eight members of the Red Stockings of New York and the same number of Blue Stockings of Philadelphia identifying each by name and position: catcher first base pitcher second base right field left field and manager; with the note "Female Base Ball Club Game at 2:30 this P.M." large sheet boldly inscribed naming New York players Misses M. Stacey M. Addison T. Sheldon R. Howard K. Moore L. Gray J. Arnold & K. Taylor; and Philadelphia players Misses E. Clifford G. Lostbaum J. Howard A. Brooks M. Pierce B. Lewis M. Harding and H. Howard. Very Good with some discoloration boldly written and easily read. 17 1/2" x 11 1/4". <br /> <br /> <p>The following is taken from an article in the September 2 1879 issue of the Springfield Ohio Republic Times: "The party of abandoned creatures professing to give exhibitions as Female Base Ball players about the country came here yesterday Monday and after being driven around town on show proceeded to the base ball grounds on the Fair Grounds and played a few innings of a burlesque base ball game. There were only eleven of the players so-called and a difficulty arose in consequence as to making even sides. It was finally arranged by putting the biggest and smallest player on the same side giving the odd one to the other. The score was 999 to 1001 when the game closed on account of darkness. A couple of hundred reprobates who would be ashamed to let their wives and grown-up children know where they were crowded the home plate and foul ball lines and a sprinkling of rising young candidates for penitentiary records gazed upon the game from the seats. There is nothing to be said of this part of the exhibition excepting that it was more degrading than anything that has struck the town since the last 'living statuary' show. A beer stand did a good business near the diamond field the 'boys' seeing to it that the players did not go thirsty." <p>Our reporter then goes on to explain a fight that began next between the team business manager Clark Frankhouse his assistant and a young Black man named Ben Hayes. A follow-up piece on the following day declares Hayes sustained only minor injuries. "The only real damage by the affair has been to the peace and dignity of the city of Springfield." Copies of newspaper reports included with lot.<br /> <br /> <p>Debra Shattuck author of the book Bloomer Girls said in an interview: "The earliest female professional baseball teams including the Female Blue Stockings of Philadelphia and Female Red Stockings of New York 1879-were comprised of teenagers and young women drawn primarily from the ranks of circus and theatrical troupes. Few had experience playing baseball. They spoke of their uniforms as "costumes" mimicked mannerisms of male players "kicking" at umpires for example and purposely incorporated humor into their games forming bucket brigades to relay balls in from the outfield skipping around the bases etc."</p> . <p>Program 4to pictorial covers illustrated 40 pp. Slight edgewear one signature 4 pages loose one inch margin tear through loose signature otherwise bright and clean; very good overall. This program is the Braves edition featuring pictures of both managers on the cover. Cleveland would win the series in six games; making it their first series win since 1920. There was plenty of talent on both teams including Frank McCormick Warren Spahn and Eddie Stankey for the Braves and Bob Feller Bob Lemon and Satchell Paige for the Indians. 1952 World Series Dodgers vs. Yankees.
<p>Program 4to pictorial covers illustrated 48 pp. Normal aging otherwise bright and clean; near fine. This program is the Dodger edition. After beating the Giants a year earlier the Yanks were faced with a fired up Dodger team and had to go the full seven games to win the series. It was an exciting series that went back and forth and while there was some good pitching and many home runs it was Billy Martin's inches from the ground catch that ended the Dodger's hopes for a series win. baseball-almanac website. </p>
