A male foursome in shirtsleeves plays this outdoor racquet game a precursor of tennis while spectators look on. Tennis in France evolved from a game played with the bare hand to one where the hand was protected. This gave way at an early date to the hand-held strung racquet and the game divided into a version played indoor "jeu de courte paume" short tennis which developed into court tennis and one played outdoors "jeu de longue paume" long tennis pictured in this plate. One Herbert Fuller Chaffee born in 1865 achieved great success managing a Bonanza farm on North Dakota only to perish with the sinking of the Titanic. The young man in the foreground of this photo staring directly into the lens bears a close resemblance to a known image of Chaffee. This photo was possibly taken when Chaffee attended Oberlin College in the late 1880's. unknown books

The Rules they adopted eventually became a standard reference for aficionados of the fledgling sport.<br/> All early editions of the Rules of the game are quite rare including this 1886 printing and they can be divided into two groups of titles: those using "Official Rules" and those using "Playing Rules".<br/>According to Phelps & Sabine editions of the THE OFFICIAL LAWN TENNIS RULES AS ADOPTED etc. appeared in 1881 Philadelphia Lippincott and 1882 Boston Wright & Dixon; but no copies of either of these editions is to be found in OCLC which lists however editions of 1885 and 1889 under that title.<br/>Also following Phelps & Sabine THE PLAYING RULES AS ADOPTED etc. was first published in New York in 1884 by Peck & Snyder. OCLC finds only one copy of that edition Brown University; Phelps & Sabine also refer to editions of 1886 this and 1889 -- however no copy of the 1886 edition is described. OCLC locates 3 copies: at St. Johns Yale and NY Public. The Racquet and Tennis CLub Library also holds a copy.<br/><br/>The first section contains "The Laws of Lawn Tennis" and "The Constitution and By-Laws" of the fledgling Association with a section on "Cases and Decisions" by James Wright; the second section contains the "Rules of Umpires" a discussion of various rackets and balls Peck & Snyder manufacturers and illustrated ads for footwear lawn markers nets tennis paraphernalia etc. Finally there is a list of over 40 Clubs belonging to the Association including the "Cheynenne Lawn Tennis Club" in Wyoming with 50 members.<br/><br/>Copies of any of these USLTA incunabula are quite rare and when found quite fragile. Althea GIbson. Tennis legend and first black athlete to cross the color line of international tennis. c. 1970. Photo signed. 10 x 8 in. Signed in black marker "To Ray Kenter with Best Wishes Althea". Gibson became the first African-American to compete at the U.S. National Championships. Gibson had a jam-packed eight-year career with all of her major championships coming from 1956 to 1958 when she appeared in a stunning 19 major finals and won 11 titles including single and doubles championships at the Australian Open French Open Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals. Gibson was the first non-white woman to win a major tennis championship and only one other woman of color had claimed this honor until Serena Williams won the US Open in 1999. At the height of her career she was ranked No. 1 tennis player in the world; after she retired from tennis Gibson became the first African-American to compete on the women's professional golf tour in 1960. unknown books
