His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog describe and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. <br /> <br />This cartoon titled "'All in Due Course. appeared thus on p.101 of the 8 February 1911 issue of Punch. The artist is Bernard Partridge. The cartoon is captioned "Catesby Mr. Churchill. 'My liege The Dukes etcetera have been taken.' Richard the Third Mr. Asquith. 'Off with their heads! So much for Dukes etcetera.' Catesby. 'My liege e'en now they prate of self-reform.' Richard the Third. 'Off with their heads! We will reform 'em later.' "Richard The Third" Colley Cibber - "French" version Act IV. Scene 4." <br /> <br />Prime Minister Herbert Asquith's Liberal government introduced the Parliament Act to curb the powers of the House of Lords following the clash between the Commons and Lords over the 1909 People's Budget. Churchill was at 'point' for much of the attack on the Lords. Here the message is: show them no mercy. In Shakespeare's Richard III Catesby is one of the King's ardent supporters. <br /> <br />Punch or The London Charivari began featuring Churchill cartoons in 1900 when his political career was just beginning. That political career would last two thirds of a century see him occupy Cabinet office during each of the first six decades of the twentieth century carry him twice to the premiership and further still into the annals of history as a preeminent statesman. And throughout that time Punch satirized Churchill in cartoons more than 600 of them the work of more than 50 different artists. <br /> <br />It was a near-perfect relationship between satirists and subject. That Churchill was distinctive in both persona and physical appearance helped make him easy to caricature. His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog describe and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. <br /> <br />This cartoon titled "CONVERSATION FOR TWO." appeared thus on p.239 of the 4 March 1931 issue of Punch. The artist is Bernard Partridge. The cartoon is captioned "Mr. Winston Churchill. 'I HOPE I INTRUDE.'" <br /> <br />The First Round Table Conference November 1930-January 1931 convened to consider government reform in India included Mohandas Gandhi and Secretary of State for India William Wedgwood Benn both depicted in this cartoon. Churchill is the only one not in contemporary garb dressed instead in old-fashioned riding clothes perhaps suggesting antiquated views. Clearly he is not an invited or welcome guest to the conversation. <br /> <br /> In 1931 Churchill had begun what would become a decade spent out of power and out of favor frequently at odds with both his own Conservative Party and prevailing public sentiment. In early 1931 Churchill broke with his Party over the India Bill. Churchill spent formative time as a young 19th century cavalry officer fighting on the northwest Indian frontier about which he would write his first published book. He certainly did not adopt an early progressive attitude toward relinquishing control over the crown jewel of Britain's colonial empire. Nonetheless it is instructive to remember that many of Churchill's dire warnings about Indian independence proved prophetic. Churchill had warned that too swift a British withdrawal from India would lead to bloody civil war and sectarian strife between Hindus and Muslims Hindu domination and destabilizing political balkanization of the subcontinent. All these predictions came to pass and to a considerable extent persist today. <br /> <br />Punch or The London Charivari began featuring Churchill cartoons in 1900 when his political career was just beginning. That political career would last two thirds of a century see him occupy Cabinet office during each of the first six decades of the twentieth century carry him twice to the premiership and further still into the annals of history as a preeminent statesman. WINSTON AND THE BRITISH LION." appeared thus on p.435 of the 18 April 1928 issue of Punch. The artist is Bernard Partridge. The cartoon is captioned "MR. PUNCH PRESENTS THE ABOVE CARTOON IN CELEBRATION OF THE FOURTH CENTENARY OF THE DEATH OF ALBRECHT DURER." In the cartoon as the British Lion rests watchfully at Churchill's feet Churchill - then Chancellor of the Exchequer - works diligently on the budget. Of note are the knives and scissors and the hour glass showing time running out. Albrecht Durer 1471-1548 like Churchill a Renaissance man was a German printer and printmaker known to da Vinci and Raphael. <br /> <br />When this cartoon was published Churchill was a dozen years and an unrecognizable world away from his wartime premiership - a premiership that saw him become indelibly associated with the British Lion ubiquitous in British heraldry for the better part of a thousand years. The association with Churchills rumbling oratory and implacably steadfast wartime leadership was perhaps inevitable. The iconic photographic portrait of Churchill taken on 30 December 1941 by Yousef Karsh among the most famous photographic images of the twentieth century - came to be known as The Roaring Lion. Years later in remarks on his 80th birthday in 1954 Churchill would remark on his legacy: It was the nation and the race dwelling all round the globe that had the lions heart. A letter about one of his drawings which has now sold to the Duke of York. Sir John Bernard Partridge 1861- 1945 was an English illustrator. Born in London he was the son of Professor Richard Partridge F.R.S. president of the Royal College of Surgeons and nephew of John Partridge portrait-painter extraordinary to Queen Victoria. The first side of the slip with writing from Bernard Partridge in French "Tout passe - tout casse - tout casse." Which translates to "everything passes everything breaks everything tires." Bernard Partridge a renowned British cartoonist and illustrator. His pieces often feature political satire caricatures and illustrations for Punch magazine showcasing his talent for creating impactful visual content. The second side by A P Herbert writing a humble collaboration with the gentlemen to the left and the right March 29th 1937 Sir Alan Patrick Herbert CH known as A. P. Herbert; 1890 - 1971 was an English humourist novelist playwright law reformist and from 1935 to 1950 an independent Member of Parliament for Oxford University. Size is 160mm x 90mm. 24 January 1897 'M.dccc.xc.vij: jan: xxiv.'; on letterhead of 11 Marlborough Road St John's Wood London N.W. 12mo 3 pp. Bifolium. Good on lightly-aged paper. Attractive red letterhead in the Arts and Crafts style. The writings she referred to in a previous letter have not come. 'You probably forgot to enclose them. I expect to read some of the papers in the days when I look in the Pall. Mall. Gazette.' He asks her to give him 'an idea of what the publisher proposes to spend on the illustrations and also the size of them and the style - pen & ink or "wash".' He has heard news of her 'from Welsh Ethel Johnson's husband who is with me at the Haymarket'. The Art of the Illustrator 1918. Print. New. Bernard Partridge. Set of Lithograph prints by Bernard Partridge on Card. PRINT. Size: 11" x 16" 279mm x 406mm. The Art of The Illustrator by Percy V Bradshaw was published in 1918 by The Press Art School Forest Hill London. In 1918 Percy Bradshaw contacted 20 of the leading illustrators of the day and commissioned each of them for a special illustration. Each artist was given an entirely free hand as to subject the only stipulation being that the painting or drawing should be representative of his/her technique and that each stage in its composition should be shown. Bradshaw then reproduced in 6 plates each step in the artistic process and published the 6 lithographs in a portfolio with a 12 page introduction and description of the process within a card folder. 'The Road to Victory' is the pen and ink drawing demonstrated by Bernard Partridge chief cartoonist at "Punch". Artists in this series are Lawson Wood F.H. Healey is featured with the wings of an angel in flight strumming an Irish harp. The Governor- General of the Irish Free State was the official representative of the British Crown in Ireland . By convention the office was largely ceremonial . Nonetheless it was controversial as many Irish Nationalists regarded the existence of the office as offensive and a symbol of continued British involvement in Irish affairs.The role of Governor-General in the Irish Free State was removed by the Irish Government from the Irish Constitution in December 1936. <br/> <br/> Punch unknown

Original beige illustrated boards. Closed tear to leading edge of first map boards darkened and with wear to spine ends. Illustrations by D.W. Sorrell. Photographic plates throughout. First edition INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR: 'To my old shipmate "Annan" RMS "Franconia" New York 27/5/26 JPG Bisset'. Lt. Commander Sir James Bisset 1883-1967 was a British merchant sea captain who spent most of his career with the Cunard shipping line. In 1912 he was second officer on Cunard's RMS Carpathia when it responded to distress calls from RMS Titanic taking 703 survivors aboard and taking them to New York. His manual Lifeboat Efficiency 1924 was the British Merchant Marine's house text on the subject until the Second World War; this title a more general text was published around 1930 and distributed to interested passengers for many years thereafter. Between 1925 and 1927 Bisset was chief officer on RMS Franconia and returned to the ship as its captain in June 1939. He spent the first four years of his war service with the ship and the rest of the war as captain of the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth. He made a total of 66 wartime voyages and delivered nearly half a million troops to their military destinations. In 1944 he was made Commodore of the Cunard Line and retired three years later. In 2010 Cunard's new Queen Elizabeth entered service on which a suite bears Bisset's name. Liverpool: Charles Birchall, N.d. [c.1930] hardcover
