First edition of this excellent early account of hunting on the Kenai Peninsula including descriptions of Alaskan Native Americans salmon cannery operations and more. Radclyffe had acquired a permit from the Bureau of Biological Survey with the USDA in order to collect big game specimens for the British Museum and the account was dedicated to a longtime fellow hunter and friend Theodore Roosevelt. The author details his experiences with hunting Alaskan Brown Bears Grizzly Bears Moose Dall Sheep and running afoul of the zealous US Deputy Marshal Sexton a stickler for the new game regulations instituted on the Kenai in 1903 not to mention destroying the distilling operation of Alaskan hunter & miner Andrew Berg. He managed to survive a charging bear sow after being abandoned by his guide as well as the Alaskan courtroom but his companions were not so lucky as the judge ruled that the permit did not extend to the hunting party. Radclyffe returned later to hunt Alaska on the Kenai in August 1910 employing Andrew Berg as his head guide. An usual game in very good condition Tosenkyo 投扇興 is a Japanese traditional game for 2 people who throw an opened fan at a target on a raised platform. The game was very popular in the late Edo period but its popularity gradually declined during the Meiji period. However in recent years the game has regained some popularity and there are various circles that enjoy the game. Each player earns points according to the way the three items fan target and platform are placed after a throw. This chart shows 54 different combinations with their scoring points with illustrations. Each combination has a title from the 54 volumes of the Tale of Genji. <br> <br>This colourful wood block print shows 54 different combinations with their titles and scores. No date. Late Edo. Complete set of 200 delicately coloured handpainted cards flecked with gold and silver. Each card 8 × 5.4 cm. Two patterned silk cases one for the text and the other the portraits of the poets with washi paper linings are held within a black wooden lacquer box 16 ×11 ×15 cm. Some light signs of use but overall a very attractive set. This famous and much beloved Japanese card game is based on the classic anthology of 100 poems by 100 different poets. The anthology known as both Ogura Hyakunin Isshu and Hyakunin Isshu brings together waka usually now called tanka poems which were written between the 7th and 13th centuries. It was compiled by the famous 13th century critic and poet Fujiwara no Sadaie more often known as Teika. Hyakunin Isshu showcases all of the most important poets from the late Heian period in Japan. <br> <br>It is difficult to give an appropriate English language parallel to the enormous influence of the Hyakunin Isshu but possibly the closest would be the influence Shakespeare has had in the English speaking world. Many educated Japanese are able to recite many of the poems and this close association with and knowledge of these poems have to a great extent come through this card game. Playing the card game of Hyakunin Isshu is a very popular New Year holiday pastime. The first to win is the person with the largest number of cards collected. To achieve this goal you must be very familiar with the poems so that you can quickly take the card on which is written the last two lines of the poem being read out before your opponent does! Gouldsbury writes of numerous encounters with tigers in his own adventures hunting from elephant back and machans as well as leopards and maruading elephants with additional references to bison ibex and others. Davies relates his time serving during the Sepoy Mutiny work as a sporting inspector and specifically hunting down tigers elephants and others endangering villagers and livestock. One chapter specifically mentions hunting a 419 lb. tiger stretching over 10 feet 7 inches from nose to end of tail and standing 3 1/2 feet which had terrorized villagers killing cattle across Bengal. The cards are kept in the original publisher's marbled slipcase ca. 4.8 x 7.2 cm with 2 engraved labels one with the title and imprint and one with the rules of the game. Set of 42 lithographed miniature playing cards 21 for Cloris printed in grey and 21 for Roosje printed in blue. Most charming set of miniature playing cards for use of a somewhat daring party game between young people of both sexes. The 42 cards each with an illustration of a couple and a four-line verse are either titled "Cloris" or "Roosje". The Cloris cards were divided between the boys and the Roosje cards between the girls. One of the young men would "propose" by reading the verse of one of his cards and one of the young ladies would answer by reading hers. The verses were full of love and desire but since the cards were read at random Roosje's reponse would not always be the logical answer to Cloris' proposal leading to hilarious situations.The name of the game most likely refers to De bruiloft van Kloris en Roosje which was a Dutch farce written by Dirk Buysero at the end of the 17th century. The play became incredibly popular. It was performed yearly throughout most of the 18th century and still widely known in the 19th century.The slipcase is scuffed and partly torn around the edges and corners. Overall dimensions 520 × 663 mm dissected into 16 panels and mounted on linen comprising a hand-coloured map engraved by McIntyre printed surface 380 × 530 mm with extensive letterpress text on either side. Paper slightly tanned with a few small marks including some inkspots creases tiny chips and scattered light foxing; top right-hand corner trimmed close with the text lightly shaved; cloth a little foxed and discoloured on the verso; overall in very good condition. An attractive Georgian board game with the winner being the first player to reach London. The letterpress gives rules for playing the game and details of the history and manufactures of the 117 towns mentioned. It is not necessarily accurate; for instance Henry VI not Henry IV was captured at Northampton by the Yorkists. <p>We have traced several reissues of the game using the same plate but with some variation to the letterpress and this error appears in several of them. The first two sheets show Chinese people in clothes appropriate to their age occupation etc. Those illustrated include The Opium Smoker School-master The General Shopkeeper Native Biblewoman etc. Other sheets show furniture and fittings a coloured illustration of the street a black and white image of the city gate and a much larger sheet 50 x 87.5cm which is an illustration of the street and onto which the other cut-outs when coloured and cut out are placed. . First edition of this wonderfully illustrated and charming alphabet game/book featuring anthropomorphic letters in the “Kingdom of the Alphabet†set against the adventures of a Medieval/Renaissance Country of Vowels and the Isle of Consonants uniting over a banquet ball to form an alphabet. Marquet 1892-1984 and Desnoyer 1901-1988 were illustrators and miniaturists noted for their inventive games and illustrations who had originally designed this game/book in 1939. They were married to the well known painters Albert Marquet and Francois Denoyer respectively. Desnoyer a Russian-Ukrainian emigre from Kiev had originally landed in Bohemia by 1906 where she learned the Western alphabet and later settled in France. This particular copy not only features the four colour lithograph boards for children to cut out and play the suggested alphabet game but also the 2 additional boards for an adult word game and back board to create toys which are typically missing as are often the colour-tinted instruction sheets. A large laughing female kangaroo with a joey in her pouch who says "Be Happy at Home!" to another young kangaroo asking "Why such joy" decorates the triangular box lid of this amusing bright orange and purple 1915 peg board game. The playing board itself is framed with the text "You can't be blue if you KANGAROO. No trouble troubles you."<br /> <br /> The unusual triangular box features three kangaroos on the top lid with edges decorated with horse shoes and shamrocks on a purple ground. The instructions are printed on the under side of the top lid including the offer of a $500 reward. The Kangaroo Corporation offered the prize for any correct solution to the game which involves landing the King in Goal No. 14. "The above prize to be awarded January 15 1916." <br /> <br /> 25 numbered holes on the board with 12 small wooden pegs. The object of the game was to jump holes so that only the King remained in hole number 14 in the manner of Chinese checkers.<br /> <br /> Each side of the triangular box measures 9 1/4". The box printed by Gray Lith. Co. N.Y.;1915 copyright by the Kangaroo Corporation. The top lid with little scratch in the lower edge corners repaired with sticky tape. This is brightly coloured post-war sugoroku is a "round the world" game and this together with the fukuwarai game printed on the reverse would have been enjoyed by Japanese families during the new year celebrations. The game which is colourfully illustrated covers East Asia Southeast Asia New Guinea Africa Europe and North and South Americas with the final goal being returning to Japan and visiting the Royal Palace in Tokyo. The game was probably printed in the 1960s when overseas travel by jet plane was regarded as a possible dream for many Japanese people. On the reverse is a fukuwarai happy-laughter game where a blind-folded player places eyes nose mouth and other pieces on the faces outlined. . No publication details. unknown

He began by drawing sports and political drawings for The Salt Lake Tribune when he was just 16 years old. Held moved to New York City in 1910 where he went on to gain notoriety for his drawings in the popular magazines "Life" "The New Yorker" "Vanity Fair" "Judge" and "College Humor." His work epitomized the Jazz Age. He is most recognized for creating the short-haired "flapper."<br /> <br /> The cover of this publication features one of Held's maps. Held's maps illustrate the diversity of his art while at the same time serving to demonstrate Held's interpretation of various notable places and things. Kori Alexander writes in his article entitled Relevant Magic in the Art of John Held Jr. "While it was Held's caricatures of the young college chaps and flapper girls that earned him public notoriety it was his linoleum cuts and pen and ink maps that fortified his legitimacy as a social commentator."
