Engaging brief presentation on front free endpaper "To a learned angler" by another who to his friend quotes supposedly "'These are not Anglers but Angels' Pope Gregory."<br/><br/>VERY SCARCE Illustrated and amusing poetic send-up of fishers of fish men & accidentally cats. The gilt impress on the front cover of the fishing friar is wonderfully bright; likewise the frontispiece and facing decorative engraved title page on heavier stock. Light and uniform age-toning to pages and plates slightly more apparent around their margins but without or very little foxing or noticeably affecting the full-page still crisp engravings. Wear to spine cloth with upper cap gone and fraying to the foot of the spine. Oblong 4to. 11.5 x 9 in. 64 pp unpaginated. thick brittle paper stock mounted on white linen hinges neatly written title page in bold clear manuscript w/ 191 tipped-in photographs sized from 2 x 4 in. up to 6 x 8 in. many albumen most silver gelatin all annotated in manuscript below images and carefully drawn manuscript borders in ink on each page nearly all with bright strong contrast some sepia-tinted. Burgundy-coloured simulated half-calf over beige cloth beveled boards minor soiling rubbing to covers some minor chipping to corners & fore-edges of pages some darkening 1 leaf loose still a VG exemplar. This splendid Edwardian photo album documents the salmon fishing adventures and scenic excursions by the photographer through the pastoral Wye Valley just a few years before the outbreak of World War I. At the beginning of the 20th century the Wye River was considered to be one of the best rivers for salmon fishing in the United Kingdom outside of Scotland and this fishermen definitely enjoyed the beauty and catch to be found. These images capture a largely undeveloped and pastoral Symonds Yat and Wye Valley as it winds along the borders of Herfordshire Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire. Bowman has included images of side-trips along the River Monnow views of mills Llandogo the Hutsham Bridge Grosmont Castle Tintern Abbey the Devil’s Chimney at the Yat Wye Valley ruin of the Llancault Church the oldest house in Monmouth winter floods at the junction of the Monnow and the Wye Rivers winter rapids and more. Also included are scenes of salmon from the Wye the rod and reels used photos of fisherman casting into the Monnow River landing a salmon and even image of fisherman holding two large salmon while braced against a roadside hedge. The salmon fishery on the Wye held up through much of the 20th century before a precipitous decline in the 1980s and 1990s however due to extensive habitat improvement work carried out by the Wye & Usk Foundation to restore spring salmon runs the run has once again climbed but not to the levels of the early 20th century. No Place: No Publisher Printed broadside approximately 280mm x 185mm in size no publisher no place Alnwick or date but circa 1855. Very lightly browned minor creasing from folds a couple of spots of foxing with a small nick to left hand side name and address in ink to reverse with minor bleed through otherwise fairly clean. Relates to a dispute between local fishermen and the local landowner over fees paid to the Craster family for access to the haven and for beaching their boats. In 1844 four fisherman refused to pay the fees and were sued in 1854 by the landowner. The court initially found in favour of the landowner but it appears that a compromise was reached in 1855. There is a copy of this broadside in the Northumberland archives and a more exhaustive account of the dispute is available on their website. No copies in Library Hub. First Edition. Unbound. A rare British leaflet from the Fishmonger-Smackman Controversy of 1715. That year a bill was in motion before Parliament that would regulate various aspects of the fishing industry including fish size net use and mesh size and the importation of lobster. The latter issue ignited a significant controversy between and among British fish merchants and lobstermen with the most vocal merchants supporting a clause that would remove a ban on the sale of lobster caught by foreigners. In the present document the pro-free-trade-lobster fishmonger lobby responds to a recent leaflet by fellow fish merchants allied with the smackmen. An early example of commercial lobbying literature which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. A rare petition to Parliament relating to a current bill concerning the mesh size of fishing nets used along the coast of Great Britain. The fishing lobby here argues that the clause limiting mesh size to four inches except for use with "Herrings Pilchards Sprats and Sardenas" will prevent the catching of various larger fish and lobster and thereby ruin much of the national fishing industry. They claim that the fishmongers who support the regulation would prefer "to bring in Foreign Fish caught in Foreign Bottoms" and profit from the higher prices. A leaflet published the same year entitled An Answer to the Case of the Coasting Fishermen indicates the present document was authored by the lobsterman lobby. An early example of commercial lobbying literature which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. In answer to an application he is sending ‘one New Programme showing Waters &c’ pointing out that not all are ‘Trout Waters’ and that ‘about 30% of the Members only take part in competitions’. He explains that they have had good he mistakenly writes ‘few’ membership over the previous two years ‘but at the present time there are a few members’. The Fisheries are the greatest and at present almost the only resource of the West of Ireland. From the loss of the potatoes as a certain means of subsistence the fiishermen would give their undivided time to the Fisheries instead of losing the best seasons by wasting their labour on a high-rented potato garden. They would thus throw an immense quantity of cured food such as Hake Cod Ling Herring Haddock and Coal Fish into the interior of the country while they could dispose of such fish as could not be cured such as Turbot Plaice Mackerel Gurnard John Dorey Ray and Soles at the markets along the coast. The cured fish even with the present limited supply brought to the markets of Westport and Newport County Mayo is sold as low as a penny per lb. free from bone green salted that is not dried and sometimes not so high as a halfpenny per lb. fresh.The company should establish stations along the coast: say they began with three one at Killibegs one at Newport Pratt and one at the Shannon Mouth.From the Store at Ballyshannon I would send fresh fish packed in Ice and also cured fish by water carriage through the Enniskillen Lakes and by the Ulster Canal on to Belfast supplying all the intermediate twons and interior of the country. Light uneven toning some fraying to margins as can be expected else a Very Good or better fresh example.<br /> <br /> Possibly unrecorded display broadside listing fishing infractions and their accompanying fines. Sea bass and lobster are the most carefully monitored especially "egg bearing" lobsters "taken for private use" $5 fine and lobsters "taking sic by non-licensed men" $20 fine. The bottom edge of the broadside concludes with the rules pertaining to fresh water fish should not be "taken in any other manner except with single hand lines with not over 2 hooks upon each". As for ice fishing "During the open season when fishing through ice a person may operate 10 lines with a single hook upon each."<br /> <br /> None in commerce or OCLC as of January 2025. s.i. unknown

Wrappers a bit foxed and slightly soiled minor wear from handling else Very Good and sound.<br /> <br /> Self-published and apparently unrecorded collection of "Facts Hints and Oddities" regarding hunting fishing and trapping compiled by Ellsworth H. Myers 1902-1989. According to the introductory text preceded by a quote from President Eisenhower these anecdotes "were published in papers from coast to coast. Some came to me from my fellow sportsman some were given to me by guides and many have been gathered over many years by the author." The opening chapter provides a state-by-state directory of whom to write to regarding fishing and hunting laws immediately followed by the bit of sagacity "When fishing for wall-eyed pike with an artificial lure strike as soon as the fish hits the lure for he will drop it immediately after he finds out it is a fake" p. 5. Subsequent chapters cover waterfowl speeds; tips on hunting rabbit woodchuck deer and elk; and "World Oddities of Nature." For example "Beavers do not eat fish although they spend most of their lives in the water. They are strictly vegetarian." Meanwhile "The Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep is a clannish animal."<br /> <br /> Not found in OCLC as of August 2021. Myers Enterprises unknown

1907: Utah. Photograph. Good . 43 silver gelatin prints mounted with adhesive to loose album leaves some accompanied by handwritten captions in pencil. Most images measure 14 cm x 8 cm. Ten of the images depict the streets of Salt Lake City including the courthouse after a freak storm in the month of May blanketed the area in snow. The rest of the images relate to the hunting and fishing exploits of a group of men in the Salt Lake City area including images of fishing on the Bear and Jordan Rivers the training of hunting dogs one captioned "we got forty dollars for the lower one" a hunting lodge in the woods plus images of a duck hunting roost showing hunters hanging out on a porch alongside freshly killed game hanging from the eaves and from their automobile. A sign on the roost lists the nicknames of members of the hunting lodge. Images quite clear and sharp album leaves creased toned and foxed. Images peeling off of album leaves. A handful of images chipped and torn at the edges. One image completely detached. Utah unknown

Rara seconda edizione, stampata in Italia, contraffazione dell’originale parigina. Pregevolmente stampata, completa, con le tavole fedelmente reimpresse sugli originali da Pietro Scattaglia. Edizione non autorizzata del «Dictionaire de toutes les especes de peches», pubblicato senza nome (ma del poligrafo francese Lacombe) a Parigi da Henri Agasse nel 1795, con l’atlante delle tavole uscito nel 1798 «chez Panckoucke», nell’ambito della monumentale «Encyclopédie méthodique» Panckoucke. In fondo all’opera (pp. 295-323) un glossario «Explication de plusieurs termes employés dans le traité des pêches … Extrait du Traité des peches de Duhamel-Dumonceau».
