Questo libro è una fiaba, è un'allegoria, raccontata con il garbo, l'ironia scanzonata e la poesia di una delle più belle penne del giornalismo sportivo italiano. Maci Battaglini, all'anagrafe Mario, nasceva il 20 ottobre 1919 a San Bortolo, Rovigo, quarto di sei fratelli. Era grande e grosso, di ossa e muscoli, ma anche di anima e cuore. Era terza centro, seconda linea, anche pilone o apertura, all'occorrenza. Era il calciatore, era il capitano, era l'allenatore in campo, fuori campo, dietro la rete, al bar, perfino a scuola dove faceva il bidello. Era un visionario e un missionario. Era marito e padre, era leggenda e mito. E tutti già sapevano che uno così grande e grosso, di ossa e muscoli, ma anche di anima e cuore, non ci sarebbe mai più stato.

Scorrendo le pagine del libro si familiarizza con fatti, personaggi, passato e presente, gergo e regole della disciplina raccontata dalla A alla Z anche con spiegazioni a prova d'ignoranti (in senso letterale, non rugbistico: Pastonesi ricorda che quando si parla di «giocatore ignorante, fisico ignorante, partita ignorante» si fa «un complimento: significa duro, tosto, coraggioso»). Da nozioni ormai note ai più come «terzo tempo» (quello vero), apprezzato dal rugbista Che Guevara e definito dal pilone inglese Jason Leonard «una tranquilla pinta di birra seguita da altre 17 pinte piuttosto rumorose». Fino a definizioni per addetti ai lavori come cap, factotum e Old, quelli che per raggiunti limiti di età possono cimentarsi in un «rugby versione light». E infine alla voce calcio le differenze con il rugby. Sintetizza Vincenzo Cerami: «Il calcio somiglia all'Italia, il rugby allo sport».
