‎Florence Italy: n.p. ca. 1908. Tall 8vo. 7.25 x 9.25 in. 50 leaves unnumbered. on thick laid paper. With 45 sepia-tinted tipped-in photographs on thick photo matte-finish photo paper sized primarily 4.5 x 6.5 in. up to 4.8 x 6.8 in. with nearly all preserving strong contrast and neat ink manuscript captions below. Original vellum binding by the historic Giulio Giannini binders in Florence yapp edges preserving calfskin ties and knots in Arts & Crafts style gilt lettering front cover very minor bowing & curving to covers still VG copy. An intriguing souvenir photo album vividly portraying a well-to-do Edwardian family’s Christmas holiday in the historic Villa Alberti via Montughi in the hills above Florence. The Villa Alberti features a historic plaque announcing it was the site of the Pazzi Conspiracy against Lorenzo de Medici in 1478 resulting in the awarding of the Villa to the Alberti family not to be confused with Villa Alberti Siena where the Brownings summered for many years and later owned and often rented out to friends by Thomas Child Hayllar 1835-1918 British barrister and former Hong Kong Executive Council member until his death during World War I. The photos show the group in period motoring coats and hats their Brass-era automobile no badging but appears to be a 1908 Lancia Alfa Limousine and motoring excursions to the San Francesco monastery driving through the Apennines Mountains with rear view of automobile about to pass over stone bridge; a large farm near Borgo San Lorenzo; a stop at the historic Villa Martelli in Gricigliano around Bagno a Ripoli originally built in 1478 but expanded and modified in the 18th century with beautiful waterworks and fishponds. They also visit Compiobbi with a very nice view of the waterfront and the Arno river the village of Pagnolle and other stops in the tour. The photographs depict the Tuscan countryside of Fiesole as backdrop including scenes of the Villa Alberti’s views well-appointed library drawing room and bedrooms as well as the large staff to maintain the Villa the chapel the garage with the automobile outside and more. The only indications of identity for the travelers appear to be cryptic reference to “I.P.S.S.’ Room†“Gertrude’s Room†and “Vincent’s Room.†Although previous owners of the album have posited this as the Ida Pilkington Spencer Stanhope and Gertrude May Spencer-Stanhope there was no way to establish that fact or if so why the family did not use the nearby Villa Nuti in Bellosguardo still owned by the family of John Roddam Spencer-Stanhope 1829-1908 noted pre-Raphaelite artist even after his death. With 40 photographs 1 linen-backed 6 real photo poscards 3 Kruxo split-backs 37 sized 5 x 7 in. some with white borders nearly all with photographer’s stamps on versos and all with pencil annotations dating the vehicle and often the race occasional chipping to corners some creasing minor soiling to a few; three sized 8 x 10 in. 1 sized 7.5 x 9.5 in. backed in gray linen hand-colouring of porcelain advertising sign in image. All images preserved in archival mylar sleeves recent post-binder gilt lettering stamped on front cover. This outstanding archive of factory photographs offers an invaluable visual record of an exciting period of time in the Brass Era which marked the shift from the wealthy afficionado driving very expensive coach-built automobiles to the average auto enthusiast being able to road race and hill climb. The images include: two Columbia 35-40 Horse-power Mark XLV touring cars which in 1905 won a number of road races in Florida hill-climbing events in Springfield and Worcester MA and several other track events; a 1906 Clement-Bayard 100 horsepower auto participating in the 1906 Glidden Tour race from Buffalo NY to Mt. Washington NH competing for the Deming Trophy; a 1907 American Morse Model B Runabout and another of a 1907 Welch Touring Car featuring overhead camshaft at the Giants’ Despair Hillclimb the oldest continuing motorsports event in Pennsylvania which has run next at Wilkes-Barre PA since 1906; Len Zengle racing his 1908 Acme at the 1908 American Grand Prize in Savannah GA; S.B. Stevens racing the Fiat Cyclone at Ormond-Daytona Beach races in 1908 -- Cedrino would be killed racing the car later that year at Pimlico; a very scarce image of a 1909 White Star Touring car built in Atlanta GA -- the company went under in 1911; as well as races featuring 1908 Pierce Arrows 1908 Studebakers a 1909 Palmer-Singer racing in Pittsburgh PA 1910 Regal 1910 Selden a 1911 Cole Flier Touring car running on solid tires and many more. Of particular interest are the larger photographs including a nicely hand-coloured image of a Gardner Car and Peerless dealership with hand-coloured porcelain sign about 1922 hanging from the front of the brick front; Chalmer’s Automobiles at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition hall; and even a Texas gasoline and tires dealership with large visible signage. In addition there is a very scarce image of a Hanover 1922 Roadster which was billed as the most reasonably priced car in the world at $ 345.00 and was fitted with a detachable trunk. Less than 200 were ever produced within the few years the company operated. The six Real Photo Postcards feature such images as Spencer Wishart 1889-1914 a pioneering Indianapolis 500 race car driver in his Type 35R Mercer Raceabout which was capable of over 90 mph and won 5 of the first 6 Indy 500 Races. Wishart was killed in his Raceabout at Elgin IL in 1914. Another shows Ralph de Palma in his Gray Ghost Mercedes which won the 1912 Vanderbilt Cup at Santa Monica CA. De Palma would eventually compete for over 27 years and raced in 2889 auto races winning 2557 of them. Spooner & Wells were very successful commercial photographers for the burgeoning automobile industry in Detroit MI and in New York. Before 1915 they were one of the primary photographers for the Ford Motor Company before they established their own in-house Photographic Department and were especially well-known for their factory photo albums for the early Brass Era automakers. Their original photographs are quite scarce in the market or in institutional collections.
