First edition of this humorous take on the impact of automobiles and automobile travel in the early 20th Century and was the first illustrated book by Williams while he was working for The Youth’s Companion children’s magazine. The work incorporates short humor stories of the Brass Era motorist previously published in the magazine and Williams’ silhouette illustrations outlined and filled in with black were similar in appearance to models used in Chinese shadow theatre. Williams 1888-1982 would later become well known for developing Michelin tire’s advertising campaigns during the Roaring 20’s featuring his cartoon character “Bibendum†often advising consumers on the advantages of Michelin tires. The 1940 model PT105 pickup was 116 inch wheelbase and increased horsepower to 79 the addition of parking lamps on top of the headlights and three chrome bars on the radiator shell. The pickups were fitted with 3-man cabs panel delivery vans were on the 1940 Roadking chassis they even provided a 1940 ambulance conversion for the Roadking touring sedan. Colour-illustrated softcovers w/ front cover art of the iconic 1932 Ford Model 18 grille slight creasing very slight edgewear still VG bright copy w/ faint dealership stamp of Raymond Price Mountainhome PA on back cover. First edition of this exceedingly scarce original dealer’s showroom brochure for the 1932 Ford Model 18 when Henry Ford brought V-8 power to the people and within a generation inspired a wide array of hot rodders. The “Deuce Coupe†was an entirely new body style thanks to Edsel Ford and the softer and smoother lines with a few more curves inspired automobile enthusiasts customers and automotive designers which would even be further refined in the soon-to-be-released 1933 models. All 1932 Fods came with black fenders wire wheels and a rear-mounted spare wheel with options of twin side mounts luggage rack clocks interior and exterior mirros and choice of leather available for customers. The 1932 Ford Model 18 was produced for only about 6-7 months in 1932 until the 1933 models appeared. The 1932 models retained the flat radiator smaller 106 in. wheelbase hence they were lighter and still powered by the powerful Ford Flathead V-8. This catalogue describes and illustrates the Durant Four-Cylinder Touring Four-cylinder Roadster Sedan and Coupe intended to compete with Ford’s Model T. These Blue Books offered complete maps of every motor road running directions at every fork and turn with mileages points of interest ferry and steamship schedules and extensive illustrated ads for all the potential motorist’s needs such as garages service stations hotels and restaurants. First edition of this informative work tracing the route and adventure in August 1904 as Salvation Army co-founder William Booth embraced the brand new motorized contraption traveling from Land’s End England to Aberdeen Scotland. The 1904 Thomas Flyer touring car was accompanied by a 1904 Thomas Tonneau touring car but Boot’s was painted white in order to attract more attention. Booth stopped off in cities towns and villages to preach to assembled crowds eager to hear the Methodist preacher’s message and the novelty of the automobiles was key. At the time less than 23000 motor cars were owned in all of Great Britain and as noted by the London Transport Museum over 98% of the vehicles in the London streets were drawn by the more than 300000 horses maintained in the urban area at the time. First edition 1 of 2500 copies printed of this seminal work detailing the author’s pioneering efforts of introducing traffic controls and street flow regulations beginning during the Progressive Era in 1899. Although Eno 1858-1945 had personally experienced his first New York traffic jam in 1867 it was missing the opening of the New York Metropolitan in 1899 that turned him to devote all his efforts to Good Roads engineering and traffic regulation and away from real estate. This volume includes his pioneering “Rules of the Road†which suggested speed limits right-of-way laws slowing and stopping signals and that vehicles should stay to one side and in 1902 New York adopted the rules creating their “Apollo Squad†traffic police. As the Progressive Era “Good Roads†movement launched largely by bicyclists and further propelled by automobiles in the Brass Era traffic flow planning patterns and regulations were also considered and adopted by governments in London Paris Berlin Rome and others consulted from as far as Australia and Japan. In addition during both World Wars he developed the military traffic control codes used overseas and in 1901 incorporated the Eno Foundation for Highway Traffic Control along with inventing the stop sign marked pedestrian crosswalks taxi stands and pedestrian safety islands. Of interest is that Eno never learned to drive. First edition of this scarce promotional catalogue touting the storied English Racing Automobiles Ltd. E.R.A. founded in Nov. 1933 and manufactured 18 single seater racing cars capable of competing against most major race car manufacturers in motorsports at the time. The E.R.A.’s used 1.1 liter 1.5 liter and 2 liter supercharged engines competing in the Voiturette classes and were particularly designed for hill climbs and won many “Small Car†races. Of the original 18 ever built 17 still survive today although many have been heavily modified and experienced changes to blowers suspension brakes and styling to remain on the cutting edge. Their efforts were rewarded in 1935 by placing 1st 3rd 4th & 5th at the prestigious Nurburgring “Voiturette†class race in 1935. No original copies in Worldcat. First edition thus of this nicely illustrated camping equipment catalogue which opens illustrations of regulation wall tents flies for wall tents and several versions of auto camping tents including the Square Umbrella Ture-Lite Water-Proof auto tent and Lean-to Tent. The Wenzel Poleless Auto Touring tent was designed to be rolled up and erected using guy wires flexible ridge member with adjustable lever and three-section steel tubing for each end allowing it to be adjustable as well as portable. Also featured are Boys Camp tents miner or teepee tents large stable tents and Gospel or Circus tents. Wenzel 1850-1922 was a German-American who originally arrived in the U.S. in 1866 and launched a sailmaking business in Massachusetts followed by an awning business in St. Louis MO but by the end of the 19th-Century had moved to producing a significant line of camping tents auto camping tents and still produces as part of the Exxel Outdoors Co. a wide array of camping tents and waterproof sleeping bags and outdoor gear. First edition of this unusually scarce original dealer’s showroom counter display catalogue for the 1955 Ford model year introducing the newly redesigned Ford Fairlane which replaced the Crestline as the top trim level and through its’ lifespan would become Ford’s flagship automobile to the mid-size market eventually accounting for 20% of Ford’s production. Of special interest is the introduction of the Ford Thunderbird styled and designed by George Walker and although introduced for sale in October 1954 was sold as a 1955 and exceeded all expectations. The popular sportscar featured fender skirts a removable fiberglass top and a fabric convertible top as an option fitted with Ford’s 292 cubic-inch Y-block V-8 and exhaust pipes through twin bumper guards. This engaging archive of Postcard publisher’s photo proofs vividly captures the impact and explosion of roadside businesses automotive motor courts and motels and tourist trap attractions from the end of the Roaring 20’s to the eve of World War II.
Park Ridge NJ & Pearl River NY: Dexter Press ca. 1929-1939. 4to. 27 leaves unnumbered. 2-pocket mylar sleeves holding 55 silver gelatin photo postcard proofs many w/ collaged text and elements mounted on stiff board some w/ extensive notes indicating addresses photographers and/or suppliers on versos sized from 2.25 x 4 in. up to 4 x 6.5 in. w/ 1 pair of images showing the proof copy alongside the finished printed standard sized photo postcard sized 3.5 x 5.5 in. w/ photographer’s info & publisher on verso many w/ some colour-tinting as well as ink editorial overpainting and airbrushes of clouds or other elements to enhance the original photographs. Recent beige-coloured cloth 3-ring binder excellent group of images. This small archive of photo postcard proofs impressively evoke the period of the vast expansion and development of the American highway system following World War I. With the number of miles doubling from 1920-1930 and then again from 1930 to 1940 Americans gook to the road to migrate and vacation while others located their roadside attraction tourist traps filling stations restaurants & diners motor courts and more within easy view of passing motorists. These original photographs encompass iconic locations across the United States from the Camp Moultrie famed Steakhouse in Blytheville AR to “Fun in the Sun Home-Made Candies†in Palm Springs CA; or 101 Motel Auto Court featugin DeLuxe Hotel Apartments along Sepulveda Blvd. in El Segundo CA on Highway 101 to Anderson Acres on the shore of Lake Erie in Huron OH. Many of the images show the proliferation of petroleum filling stations restaurants and rest stops for weary travelers including the “Trailer City†in Hot Springs AR which sold Gulf Oil; “Shady Grove Cabins†selling Benzoline Gas and Coca-Cola on Route 6 near Farmington CT; or even Shield’s Service Station at Main & Grand in McAlester OK. Roadside attractions intended to entertain and draw in the highway expeditioners included the “World’s Smallest†violin made by Otto Ridlisbacher at “The Friendly Buckhorn†in Rice Lake WI; fine textiles weaving pottery baskets and wood novelties in the Roaring Fork Shop at Gatlinburg TN; the Waverly TN home of notorious badman Jesse James; the giant “Big Red Apple†in Cornelia GA; the “Possum Kingdom†furrier & zoo attraction at Lake Graford TX; or even the Indian Spring in Upper Sandusky OH where author Charles Dickens drank in 1843.Interiors and exteriors of cafeterias hotels fishing camps theatre’s creameries log cabins and even the service staff such as at the Capitol Restaurant in Williamsburg VA are depicted. Dexter 1899-1993 launched his Dexter Press in Park Ridge NJ in 1920 following World War I where he also founded several newspapers simultaneously but by 1938 had sold off the newspapers and would focus on postcards and colour souvenir postcards. First edition stated of this excellent account of the author’s follow-up automobile/truck expedition to his “Across Unknown Australia†which featured deep drives into the deserts of the Northern Territory and Western Australia this time driving two Guy Roadless Vehicles fitted with trailers along with an AJS motorcycle and sidecar. The British Guy trucks were rugged featuring 4-cylinder engines fitted with a detachable cylinder head and 4-speed gearbox and fitted with caterpillar tracks. The half-tracks were prone to serious wear in the desert sand eating through bushings and selals and slowed them down quite a bit. They followed Sturt Creek past Lake Stretch Billiluna Homestead and onto Gregory’s Salt Sea Lake Gregory and then the little used Canning Stock Route to Well 48. After reaching Yeeda they crossed the Fitzroy River and then onto Broome. Unfortunately the film produced during the expedition “Grip of the Wanderlust†and shown to the then Prince of Wales later King Edward VIII has now been lost. Two intriguing vernacular Progressive Era photo albums filled with 562 original silver gelatin photographs depicting this talented amateur photographer railroad machinist mechanical engineer and later auto repair shop owner driving to Yosemite & Yellowstone National Parks along the Columbia River Highway camping & driving to Mount Baker Mount Rainier National Park and more. The MacKay’s friends & family auto camped and traveled through the West up to Vancouver B.C. hunted fished visited the Panama-Pacific International Exposition as well as Schmitz Park and the beaches of West Seattle with these albums capturing several decades of their adventures.

These photo albums faithfully follow the sporting and leisure activities of two gearheads from Chicago -- Walter MacKay and his brother Carrol MacKay who together with their extended families and friends drive and auto-camp across the West. The large first album opens with many photos following a trip to Yosemite National Park as well as scenes along the route and upon the return of Walter & Julia. Their follow-up automobile trip in 1928 takes them to Yellowstone National Park via Spokane Idaho and Montana with photos included of Old Faithful a photo by Haynes of the Grand Geyser as well as auto camping at “Mammoth Hot Springs.†Subsequent photos trace their travels through the Columbia River Gorge the Snake River Mount Rainier National Park Ariel Dam near Ariel WA Hoods Canal WA and Newport OR. Their speed boat launch the Carmen is featured in some photos along with several views of pumps hoisting engines giant diesel and gas engines under repair. Other trips include those to Snoqualmie Falls Trout Lake WA near Mt. Adams working a hoist at logging camp partying with friends in Renton WA and even views of Walter MacKay advertising his Automobile Repair Shop with a cover on his rear tire. Other outings include auto camping and picnicking along the Mt. Hood Loop Grant’s Park on the Clackamas River Mt. Hood the Rogue River Table Mountain and views of Grants Pass. Walter and his gearhead friends were known for their stripped-down roadster racing cars and were also early participants in the Seattle Motorcycle Club and Motorcycle races. A couple photos within the two albums show early motorcycles and even gallivanting on some stripped down chassis without engines or tires. The second album includes a series of photos featuring Walter and his car beneath a towering Cedar Stump with arch cut into the base and him holding gun as well as standing on the fenders of the car. The second also includes automobile camping photos with tent and cots folded out of the rear of the automobile driving into Vancouver B.C. as well as driving to Mount Rainier and more along the Columbia River Highway and Mount Hood. Also featured are hunting shots in Eastern Oregon construction of a summer log cabin and much more. Mackay 1883-1959 was a mechanical engineer machinist gearhead racecar builder who came West working for the railroad as a machinist before working for Paragon Co. in Seattle as parts manager. He owned and operated the MacKay Automotive Repair at 165 E. 39th in Portland OR on the SW corner of 39th Cesar Chavez and Belmont for years before working at Albina Engine & Machine Works at the end of the Great Depression. One of the photos in the 2nd album shows MacKay with his camera shooting a photo and several show Julia MacKay’s 1880-1958 sisters and family. Should be noted we unknowingly catalogued an album on Seattle Auto Racing and Motorcycle Clubs from before World War I without having had access to these unknown albums. The outer ends of the leaf springs were clamped to a solid axle and the car wobbles around fixed to the apex at the center which was addressed by using arms such as the Panhard Rod to stabilize the much faster car. First edition of this stylish dealer’s showroom brochure for the 1961 Oldsmobile automobiles which featured the introduction of the unique mid-size F-85 powered by a aluminum 215 cubic inch V-8 trying to compete with similar offerings by Buick and Pontiac. Featuring illustrations by Fitzpatrick & Kaufman who were able on occasion to include their initials AF/VK hidden in their General Motors artwork. The full size line-up models featured an all-new smaller streamlined and rounded body and chassis with perimeter “Guard Beam†frame and all-coil suspension replaced the leaf springs. All of the full-size Oldsmobiles were powered by the 394 cubic-inch Rocket V8 with the Dynamic 88 featuring a 2-barrel 250 horsepower version. The Super 88 could be purchased with a 4-barrel 394 Skyrocket V8 rated at 325 horsepower. Fitzpatrick b. 1919 launched his career by apprenticing under John Tjaarda at the Briggs Body Co. as a designer in 1937 and later designed the Darrin Packard One-Eighty sedan before working for General Electric during World War II. After the War Fitzpatrick illustrated for Mercury Lincoln Nash & Plymouth before being recruited for the 1953 Buick portfolio and later granted exclusive contract with GM. Kaufman b. 1918 was a Disney animator who worked on Fantasia and Dumbo and later with the Army Air Corps First Motion Picture Unit and teamed up with Fitzpatrick in 1951. Their original artwork created for GM through 1970 remain some of the most desired automobile art of the 20th Century.
