Costamasnaga. L'analisi che l'autore compie, con gli strumenti dell'antropologia e di altre scienze umane, riguarda le pratiche, i ruoli, la struttura, l'organizzazione, i valori, la missione di coloro che la animano e dei ragazzi che gareggiano: una missione diretta specialmente a costruire il futuro corridore in bicicletta partendo dall'infanzia, ma che trova significato anche in relazione al contesto socioculturale in cui l'associazione si colloca. Il lavoro propone, quindi, una riflessione su un oggetto preciso, che però si può applicare ad altri contesti sociali. Il libro testimonia la posizione anfibia dell'antropologo che, andando sul terreno, con le sue osservazioni e le sue relazioni umane, mette in comunicazione due culture: quella che porta dentro di sé e quella di coloro che osserva e studia, dando vita ad una interpretazione negoziata dei significati che le pratiche umane assumono. Per questo, il libro vuole parlare ai lettori comuni e agli studiosi di scienze umane, per far conoscere la complessità del mondo dei ciclisti, ma anche ai vari protagonisti di questo mondo, proponendo loro una consapevolezza diversa su ciò che ritengono di conoscere benissimo.

I brani di diari raccolti in questo volume ci parlano di un mezzo di locomozione che ha rivoluzionato i costumi del paese. Bicicletta sovversiva, giudicata inadatta a donne e sacerdoti in quanto "macchina infernale", pericolosa incarnazione della modernità. Bicicletta dapprima aristocratica, mezzo costoso e inadatto alle disponibilità economiche dei più. Poi, col Novecento, bicicletta democratica, mezzo di trasporto di impiegati e di operai, uomini della strada che non faticano a identificarsi negli eroi di quel Giro d'Italia che inizia a entusiasmare gli animi. Parlare della bicicletta, dice Marc Augé - e ce lo rammenta Stefano Pivato nell'Introduzione a questa raccolta - non significa rievocare soltanto ricordi personali, ma ripercorrere una storia condivisa da milioni di altre persone. Così la dimensione autobiografica delle pagine qui pubblicate si apre, prende respiro e ci regala un quadro inedito della nostra storia recente. Tracciato da un punto di vista particolare e privilegiato: il sellino della bicicletta.

Sia lodato Bartali. Il mito di un eroe del Novecento
br. "Sia lodato Bartali": in questi termini un quotidiano plaude, il 24 luglio 1948, alla vittoria di Gino Bartali al Tour de France. Quel titolo suona oggi ironico, ma allora era assolutamente privo di scherno perché rivolto a un personaggio oggetto di una venerazione quasi religiosa. Proprio per questo il trionfo in terra francese assunse il sapore di un evento miracolistico che, secondo una vulgata largamente diffusa, avrebbe sdrammatizzato la rivoluzione nella quale l'Italia rischiava di precipitare dopo l'attentato al leader comunista Palmiro Togliatti. Singolare davvero è la storia di Gino Bartali proclamato nel 2018 cittadino onorario di Israele per aver contribuito, durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, a salvare centinaia di ebrei. Nella seconda metà degli anni Trenta il ciclista fu al centro di una vera e propria beatificazione da parte del mondo cattolico che attorno alla sua figura creò il mito del «magnifico atleta cristiano» contrapponendolo all'eroe sportivo muscolare del fascismo. Nel dopoguerra Bartali contese a Fausto Coppi il primato della popolarità e la rivalità fra i due campioni si alimentò anche di motivi politici: al Bartali «cattolico e democristiano» le folle contrapposero il Coppi «comunista». Un vero e proprio duello politico e sportivo: a colpi di Guerra Fredda e di pedale.

ill., br. Indispensabile nella vita contemporanea, strumento di svago e di lavoro, simbolo di libertà: la bicicletta ha 150 anni e non li dimostra. Ci ha accompagnato dentro la prima modernità industriale, ha cambiato lo stile di vita di uomini e donne. Una marcia vincente ma non priva di ostacoli: ai suoi inizi essa infatti parve un attentato alla pudicizia femminile, una minaccia alla dignità dei sacerdoti cui ne fu proibito l'utilizzo, persino un incentivo alla criminalità, dando luogo a dibattiti accaniti e grotteschi. Una storia straordinaria, che attraversa tutte le vicende del Novecento, dalle guerre alla Resistenza, alla ricostruzione che s'incarnò nei trionfi di Coppi e Bartali, per giungere ai giorni nostri che vedono ormai nella bicicletta il mezzo d'elezione della nuova sensibilità ambientalista.

Clean and fine broad margins. <br/><br/><em>First appearance of Playfair's investigations on the Schehallien mountain in Scotland.John Playfair first visited the Scottish mountain Schiehallion during Nevil Maskelyne's 1774 plumbline deflection experiment which was conducted to measure the density of the Earth. The mathematician Charles Hutton analysed the survey data from the experiment reporting the mean Earth specific gravity as 4.5 in 1778. Playfair undertook a lithological mapping exercise in 1801 to improve the accuracy of Hutton's estimate and reported a range of 4.564.87 in 1811. The computation of the gravitational effect of topography with variable subsurface density effectively made him the creator of the first geophysical model. As such not only was Playfair's Schiehallion contribution pioneering in itself but it was representative of his more significant works in both mathematics and geology in that he built on existing benchmark work with novel and valuable additions of his own. Although Playfair's map of the extent of the Schiehallion quartzite was quite accurate the Society's fourth President John MacCulloch having visited Schiehallion was dismissive of Playfair's representation of the subsurface density variation. MacCulloch spent several years searching Scotland for a more favourable site for a plumbline experiment travels that allowed him to compile the data for his 1836 geological map of Scotland. John R.
