‎ill., ril. Venticinquemila escursionisti di ogni età e sesso salgono ogni anno in vetta al Kilimanjaro, la montagna più alta del continente africano. È considerata una montagna "facile", quasi alla portata di tutti ed è una delle vette più alte raggiungibili senza l'ausilio dell'ossigeno. Tuttavia per i protagonisti è stata una piccola impresa, perché la certezza di riuscire ad arrivare sulla vetta l'hanno avuta solo nell'istante in cui hanno toccato il cartello di legno che riporta la scritta "Uhuru Peak, 5895 m a.m.s.l.". La sfida è stata certamente il confrontarsi con la montagna, con la fatica, con il clima rigido e l'altitudine, ma è stata soprattutto confrontarsi con loro stessi, con le loro capacità e debolezze. Prima edizione, stampata il 4 dicembre del 1941, di questa celebre raccolta di memorie di scalata del famoso alpinista originario di Borgomanero, Piero Ghiglione (Borgomanero, Novara 1883 - Lavis, Trento 1960), grande alpinista e fra gli iniziatori dello sci-alpino. Fin da giovane si trasferì per ragioni di lavoro prima in Svizzera e poi in Germania, imparando il pattinaggio su ghiaccio e lo sci, temi sui quali scrisse diversi articoli sulla "Rivista mensile del Club alpino italiano". L'opera raccoglie le scalte di Ghiglione sul Karakoram, in Scozia, Norvegia, Aconcagua, Queen's Maryu Queen, Kaisergebirge, Bulgaria, Tatra, Sudan, Kilimandjaro, Mawenzi, Nelion, Baitan, Lapponia ecc. ecc.‎

‎Erste Ausgabe dieser klassischen Beschreibung der Erstbesteigung des Kilimandscharo (auch Kilimanjaro) durch Hans Meyer und Ludwig Purtscheller mit hervorragendem Abbildungsmaterial. - Hans Meyer (1858 - 1929) war der Sohn des Verlegers Hermann Julius Meyer. Nach seinem Studium reiste Meyer über Indien und die Philippinen in die USA, bevor er 1884 in die Geschäftsleitung des "Bibliographischen Instituts" eintrat. 1886-1911 unternahm er fünf Afrikaexpeditionen, wobei er u.a. den Kilimandscharo erforschte, kartierte und gemeinsam mit Ludwig Purtscheller als erster Europäer 1889 erstieg. 1890 erfolgte die Aufnahme in die Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina. Seine am Kilimandscharo begonnenen vulkanologischen Forschungen führte Meyer 1903 in Ecuador fort. - Teils etw. fleckig und durchgehend etw. gebräunt. Vortitel mit kl.
