Photo Albums : Water Skiing
Photo Archive of Competition Water Skiing
Various including Spokane Washington and Phoenix Arizona 1963-1972. About 320 photographs spread across 3 different circa-1970's adhesive page spiral bound albums. Most prints Kodacolor snapshots about 3 1/2" square with a few black and white snapshots some contact prints and medium enlargements peppered about. A few mounted clippings. Some occasional ink notations to album pages. Each album with an ink adhesive label over spine: "63 / 1964 / 65 / BOAT & / SKI RACING" ; "1970-71 / BOAT & / SKI RACING." ; "1971-72 / WATER SKI / HIGH PIONT / DINNER / AWARD / OUR HOME / IN PHOENIX." Prints firmly adhered to pages a few with some scuffing possibly from removal in another mounting and rehomed here. Apart from inherent issues with the adhesive construction overall contents clean. About very good.

3 albums of vernacular photography capturing the competitive water skiing activities of a Spokane Washington and later Phoenix Arizona based family from about 1963 to 1972. The earliest of the trio identifies a Brown family in two mounted clippings a father Robert and son Dirk and the subjects within appear to stay consistent throughout the albums providing a seemingly sound identification for an otherwise anonymous group. Multiple performance ski boats are pictured with the reoccuring yellow and black painted "Banshee" models appearing to be the family's signature. Occasional 1970's views show a small fiberglass boat with an outboard Mercury motor though the majority of boat images are of performance racing boats the variety popular in the Pacific Northwest and West Coast during the era with massive inboard V-8 motors likely big block American motors Chevrolet Ford or Chrysler of the muscle car era from all apperances jammed into the diminutive fiberglass shells in a design and peformance aesthetic among the most daring and ambitious if not at least somewhat absurd in any American motorosports era. Named locations include Spokane Washington ; Fresno California ; Canyon Lake Arizona ; Lake Havasu City Arizona ; Las Vegas Nevada etc. We estimate about 15% of photographs scattered throughout capture family events unrelated to the boat racing and competitive skiing though most images do providing a substantial intimate and engaging glimpse into a niche performance motorsport subculture in the American West during the 1960's and 1970's. unknown
