‎An Hieroglyphic Poetical Epistle from a Gentleman to a Lady;‎

‎London: Laurie & Whittle 1799. Satirizing exaggerated courtship An attractive pairing of rhymed rebus letters from a gentleman to a lady and her response. Rebus puzzles with symbols used to replace whole or parts of words were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries and were often used in satirical engravings. The letter from the gentleman opens "Dear Lady When lucid eyes like stars unclouded shone and women's charms like angels seem divine" and continues with similar exuberant praise; the lady sees through this and rebuts him: "I'm sharp enough your flattery to despise". The pair were first published in 1771 by W. Tringham here printed by Laurie & Whittle from the same plates. The Laure & Whittle issue is also found on paper watermarked 1814; this copy bears no watermark. 2 broadside copper engravings with original hand-colouring on unwatermarked wove paper plate mark 340 x 226 mm sheet size 480 x 300 mm. Minor rippling at extremities with printed area unaffected otherwise in excellent condition. Not in Catalogue of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum. unknown‎

Plusieurs vers ont cru spirituel de faire quelques galeries dans les marges, mais sans jamais s'aventurer dans le texte, se contentant des marges. Papier légèrement bruni, les pages de garde sont proprement décollées. Reliure ancienne.‎

‎5 vignettes de titres (de l'imprimeur ), 1 portrait répété 3 fois (Tabourot) et 1 portrait du sieur Gaulard, 17 emblèmes et de très nombreux symboles et compositions typographiques (dans le premier livre des Bigarrures), et in fine la devise de Tabourot, "Tous accord" sur un tambour gravé. Rare exemplaire réunissant les deux livres de Bigarrures (numérotés I et IV, les livres II et III n'ayant jamais paru), Les Touches, Les Escraignes dijonnoises, et Les Contes facétieux, chacune des parties disposant de feuillets de titres distincts, elles furent souvent séparées et revendues séparément. Le terme de « touche » renvoie au vocabulaire de l'escrime ; les « escraignes » désignaient dans la Bourgogne natale de l'auteur des huttes en terre dans lesquelles les filles des vignerons se réunissaient pour la veillée, et ce nom était par extension appliqué à des contes ou à des traits souvent peu édifiants. Célèbre recueil "bigarré" de cet auteur rabelaisant qui traite avec une parfaite érudition la question du divertissement langagier. Un véritable traité des mécanisme de l'humour à la Renaissance: Tabourot explique tout d'abord, dans Les Bigarrures, le fonctionnement des jeux de mots fondés sur l'ambiguïté inhérente à la langue (« équivoques », « entends-trois ») ou sur la déstructuration de celle-ci (contrepèteries, rébus). Il s'intéresse ensuite aux formes traditionnelles de l'épigramme (Les Touches) ou du fabliau (Les Contes et Les Escraignes) proposant une attaque ou un récit dont la force comique réside en un glissement de sens : passage du figuré au littéral, changement d'échelle ou de registre, etc. Salué pour ses Bigarrures par les milieux savants de l'époque, Tabourot resta en revanche incompris dans cette démarche concernant les contes populaires considérés comme d'inspiration vulgaire. Les Bigarrures comprennent l'une des première présentations théoriques des rébus, dits « de Picardie », dans leurs utilisations emblématique ou simplement ludique. Plusieurs passages très lestes offrent des exemples caractéristiques de la littérature érotique d'avant l'âge classique. Alain Nicolas, vente Beaussant Lefèvre, 3/12/2010.
