‎[PHILIPS ACADEMY]‎

‎MUSIC HIGH SCHOOL P. A. Bands '53-'54‎

‎Andover Massachusetts: Philips Academy 1954. First Edition. Comb binding. Near fine. Oblong small quarto comb-bound album 26pp. of photographs with one image per leaf. Each photograph measures about 5" x 7". Photographs and album in excellent condition overall near fine. A neat whimsical 1954 memento album for the school band of Philips Academy aka "Andover". We were able to locate the yearbook from this period which reproduces a few of the images seen here so we imagine that several copies of this album were produced. The images depict members of the marching band at football games in rehearsal in interior performances and a few "at ease." A charming snapshot of extracurricular life at Andover in the 1950s. We did not locate any other copies in libraries or offered in the trade but presume one or two must be extant. [Philips Academy] unknown‎

‎[Royal Academy of Music, London: centenary celebrations] Sir Alexander Campbell Mackenzie (1847-1935), Scottish composer, Princi‎

‎Royal Academy of Music London. Circular in form of facsimile letter from Principal Sir A. C. Mackenzie asking alumni to take part in centenary celebrations. Addressed to cellist Ambrose Gauntlett.‎

‎8 February 1922; on letterhead of Royal College of Music London. See Mackenzie’s entry in the Oxford DNB. Gauntlett was later appointed Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music. See Sir Anthony Lewis’s appreciative Times obituary. 2pp 4to. On bifolium of good paper with letterhead printed in black with the College’s arms in red. A very good facsimile of Mackenzie’s autograph and signature with twenty-five lines of text. Addressed in manuscript to ‘A. Gauntlett Esq. / 12 Fairholme Road / W Kensington / W.’ Begins: ‘You will doubtless have heard of our intention to celebrate the centenary of the R. A. M. next July by a week of musical festivities under direct Royal Patronage. So much interest and desire to participate in the movement has been expressed by our old students that we are led to believe that many of them would be willing - if able - to play with the orchestra at one or both of the Concerts which we intend giving. It would be a crowning Triumph to our demonstration if we could muster an orchestra entirely composed of artists trained in the Institution performing works written by Academicians and led by conductors educated in the R. A. M.’ Details are given of two intended concerts. 8 February 1922; on letterhead of Royal College of Music, London. unknown‎

‎The 1902 Association of Graduates of the United States Military Academy. Bulletin Number 2‎

‎West Point: United States Military Academy 1902. First Edition. Wraps. Fair. Wraps. 93 pages 1. Gray paper covers with title bordered in black. Small blue name label of "Chas Edgeworth Jones Augusta Ga" pasted down at the bottom of the front cover. The paper covers and spine have been repaired with archival paper. The front cover is detached split vertically down the left border. Old glue stains on the verso of the front cover. Brown stains where letters and clippings were tipped in. Fair to good condition. <br /> <br /> This copy has 3 tipped in letters; 6 tipped in small news clippings; and hand written margin notes and pencil marks in the text. The owner of this copy was Charles Edgeworth Jones son of Charles C. Jones Jr. Charles C. Jones Jr. was a Georgia author and historian. Edgeworth Jones was also a historian and the author of "Georgia in the War 1861-1865" published in 1909. This Academy bulletin is scarce. The first letter tipped in before the title page was typed on United States Military Academy West Point letterhead and dated March 12 1902. The letter is signed by Brig. General William C. Rivers Army Inspector. There is a small newspaper clipped picture of Rivers with the letter. General Rivers thanks Jones for providing information for this bulletin regarding Confederate Generals that attended the Academy before the Civil War. He promises to express ship 20 copies of his pamphlet as a slight tribute for Jones efforts in collecting data and asks for any missing data or corrections. The second letter is tipped between pages 52 and 53 which contain a list of Confederate Generals that attended West Point. This letter is typed by Jones and dated March 30th 1902. This contents of the letter lists 16 additional Confederate Generals that were originally omitted. The third letter letter located in back is dated March 24th 1902 and typed on Guetchius & Chappell Attorneys At Law Columbus GA. letterhead. Mr. Guetchius one of the partners in the firm signs the letter and thanks Jones for his efforts in providing information for the bulletin. Guetchius states in the letter - "I congratulate you on this work and am much gratified to know that our northern friends through this present generation are at least beginning to do justice in some measure to the Southern cause." There are 5 more clippings tipped in the text that include small pictures of Confederate officers. In addition to the tipped in paper items there are some handwritten corrections and several small pencil check marks in the text. <br /> <br /> This bulletin with the added ephemera provides an interesting account of changing attitudes towards the South with the inclusion of Confederate Generals in the centennial bulletin. ‎Bericht Uit Psychopolis 3 1970‎

‎The Hague: Vrije Academie / Psychopolis 1970. First Edition. Tabloid ca 60cm x 40cm; on newsprint unpaged 46pp chiefly illus. Vertical and horizontal folds as issued; some puckering to paper at intersection of folds; mild toning to fold-lines and extremities but still a complete well-preserved copy easily Very Good. Annual "catalogue" for this experimental art academy in The Hague founded in 1933 as a studio where "vrije" took on a double meaning: ".poor talented students could study without payment.and admissions requirements were not set.anyone could register.there was no set program in which the student should take an exam.education was dominated by personal development and individual expression." In 1968 under the Directorship of George Lampe the institution changed its name to "Psychopolis" and became something of a countercultural mecca a "bustling breeding ground for bohemians and avant-gardists who walked in and out of the classes but where exciting works of art were created." from the Academie's website 2021. Among the legendary faculty at Psychopolis were Jan Sierhuis Wil Bouthoorn Peter Gentenaar Georg Hadeler Jan Snoeck the filmmaker Frans Zwartjes and others all pictured in action here. This unconventional catalogue clearly intended to reflect the gestalt of the institution with minimal interference in the way of hard information is uncommon; not separately catalogued in OCLC KVK or COPAC. ‎[West Point] United States Military Academy [Borman, Frank]‎

‎Report to the Secretary of the Army By the Special Commission on the United States Military Academy regarding the Honor Code with Extensive Annotations By Col. "Red" Reeder Letters and Notes‎

‎West Point New York: USMA 1976. Staple-Bound. Very Good. A scathing & pithy commentary on the Borman Report on the state of affairs at West Point by Colonel Russell Potter "Red" Reeder Jr. 1902 - 1998 United States Army officer a highly decorated veteran of W.W.II and author. The Borman Report was an investigation of the West Point system of Honor and its Code. Frank Borman was a West Point graduate who joined the Air Force and commanded the Apollo VIII and Gemini VII missions. At the time he was asked to chair this "Blue Ribbon" commission he was the chairman of Eastern Airlines. The Academy was under scrutiny for reported abuses and scandals involving cadets. Col. Reeder for 20 years the respected Athletic Director of the U.S.M.A. was asked to comment and his copy of the report is annotated on almost every page. There are also letters to and from Academy and Department of the Army personnel including one where he recounts a conversation with Eisenhower about the Honor Code. Col. Reeder cites specific instances where the code and its application had been either abused or misinterpreted by less-than-caring Point administration often resulting in unfair foolishly judged and downright poor treatment of cadets. Throughout Col. Reeder's approach is one of humanity and good sense and is especially potent given that his entire life was spent within the U.S. Army under one aspect or another and his years of experience with the men and boys under his command gave him insight that would be difficult to surpass. At the front is stapled-in a note on Reeder's letterhead stating ".There will be moans abt. this report. Some at U.S.M.A. think nothing is wrong. But in 30 years there have been two cadet honor dismissals involving abt. 100 cadets each plus one "Scandal" that was swept under the rug. U.S.M.A. should expect some outside changes because they were not cleaning up internally." Loosely inserted are several letters & carbon copies of letters one from Reeder to Frank Borman wherein Reeder tells of meeting with General of the Army Eisenhower who specifically had asked Col. Reeder about the cadets' adherence and loyalty to the Code and his concerns Reeder noting that now more than ever is there need for paying attention to the good structure of the Academy since enrollment was nearly 4 times the size as when Eisenhower was a cadet; with a note to Col. William J. Taylor Jr. regarding the report and Taylor's grateful reply after reading it and Reeder's comments and recommendations. Evidently Reeder had sent the annotated report to several respected colleagues as well as the commission as there are notes that Lt. Col. Dale Hruby as well as Brig. Gen. Harvey Fraser had been in communication list in reviewing this document their names both on the front cover as being forwarded the report. <br /> <br /> 91 pages with handwritten marginal notations underlining for emphasis in red and blue and references to other internal notes and incidents by him. Stapled on the side some edge tips wear soiling to cover sheet and back cover which is loose laid-in materials with light wear and contained in the original manila envelope titled in Reeder's hand worn with tears; overall in very good condition; a very interesting annotated report and group of correspondence a unique archive of material concerning the U.S.M.A. at West Point during a particularly troublesome time of upheaval and self-examination especially as coming from the knowledgeable pen of the prominent Col. Reeder. USMA unknown‎
