A handsome clean and bright copy very well preserved tight and strong minimal aging one corner a bit bumped. VERY SCARCE AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. This book was based on a series of lectures Stein gave at the Lowell Institute in Boston at the request of the president of Harvard University and represents a succinct account of the explorations antiquarian and geographical which he undertook throughout his life in Chinese Turkistan and adjacent parts of Central Asia. While many of Stein’s career travels took him further south he states that the memories of his years in the areas in “the deserts and mountains of innermost Asia are still as fresh and cherished as before.†Within the pages of this book can be found the accounts of sojourns across the Hindukush to the Pamirs and K’un-Lun ventures into the cave-shrines of the Thousand Buddhas and explorations in the Nan-Shan Ranges all told in Stein’s knowledgeable and eloquent style. Oxford: privately printed at the Clarendon Press 1923. First edition 8vo pp. 19 1; original brown printed wrappers; some minor creasing slight separation at the top of the spine; all else very good. Inscribed at the top of the from wrapper: "With kindest regards of / A. Stein." Pandit Govind Kaul a respected scholar of Persian and Sanskrit was born in Srinagar and came into contact with Aurel Stein through George Buhler "that doyen of European Indologists . It was Buhler's commendatory reference that attracted Stein's attention towards G.K. and he solicited his assistance in translating Kalhan's Rajatarangini - a job that G.K. along with Pandit Sahaz Bhatt did with utmost competence from 1888 to 1896 and to Stein's great satisfaction. "G.K. went into another collaboration with Stein and fellow scholar Sahaz Bhatt when they classified and catalogued more than six thousand Sanskrit manuscripts for Maharaja Ranbir Singh's library at Raghunath Temple Jammu. Yet another contribution G.K. made was to compile Kashmiri folk tales with Stein which the latter formally edited with George Grierson and published in 1917 as " Hatim's Tales." The tales supposedly told by one Hatim Tilawony were interpreted by Govind Kaul who also rendered assistance to Grierson in the compilation of his Kashmiri dictionary but did not live to see the work completed. Grierson went on to record later that Govind Kaul's assistance to him was "one of the many debts he ever owed to Stein. "On Govind Kaul's death in June 1899 a shocked Stein lamented that Govind Kaul ''like another Kalhana departed as my best Indian friend beyond all hope of reunion in this Janma'. Paying fulsome tributes to him Stein wrote: 'Whenever Govind Kaul was by my side whether in the dusty exile of Lahore or alpine coolness of Mohand Marg in Kashmir I was in continuity with the past as the historical student of India. Member of “The Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire†as Knight Commander KCIE and Fellow of British Academy. He made four major expeditions to Central Asia in 1900 1906–1908 1913–1916 and 1930. His greatest discovery was made at Mogao Caves also known as “Caves of the Thousand Buddhas†near Dunhuang in 1907. The Stein collection mostly manuscripts and other relics has been placed in the British Library the British Museum and partly to the Srinagar Museum and the National Museum in New Delhi.<br /> <p>. Boyd Glasgow to front free endpaper some marginal pencil marks; preserved in a clamshell box.<br /><br /><b>Scarce first edition of this significant report</b> from Stein's period as Inspector-General of Education and Archaeological Surveyor of the North-West Frontier Province and Baluchistan to which combined post he had been appointed in July 1903. No copies are recorded at auction on Rare Book Hub.<br /><br />During his 1904-5 survey Stein became the first European to visit Mahaban accompanied by Rai Lal Singh of the Survey of India who made a survey map under Stein's supervision. Stein concluded that the identification of Mahaban as the Aornos of Alexander the Great's time was invalid and discovered on Banj mountain south of Mahaban ruins which he identified as the site of the Buddha's Body-offering where according to Chinese pilgrims. the Buddha in his former life was believed to have offered his body to feed a tigress. Stein also made a survey of the remains of a mountain stronghold known as Kafirkot on the Khasor range south-east of the Kurram valley. Il est illustré de 147 figures hors texte, parfois dépliantes ou en couleurs, accompagnées des serpentes légendées d'origine ainsi que d'une carte dépliante en fin de volume. Cet ouvrage est le fruit de trois expéditions effectuées par Stein en 1900-1901, 1906-1908 et 1913-1916, soit presque de 7 ans de voyage, la plupart du temps à pied ou à cheval, sur une distance de plus de 40 000 kilomètres, dans le Turkestan chinois et aux alentours. En tant que spécialiste reconnu de la région, le président de l'Université d'Harvard aux États-Unis lui demande de donner une série de conférences sur ses expéditions. C'est à cette occasion qu'il rédige son récit. Au contraire de celles publiées précédemment, cette relation de voyage est destinée à un public large et non spécialiste, dans le but de faire une introduction géographique, historique et ethnographique de la région.
