"Ethiopian illuminated manuscripts of the present quality today have virtually disappeared from the market" (Hartung & Hartung, original sales note). Occasional marginalia by a later hand. The illuminations are marked by short strings sewn into the blank margins of the relevant pages. - Provenance: Hartung & Hartung 79 (2 May 1995), lot 127; sold to an Austrian private collection and acquired from the descendants.

Together with original cover, opened on three sides, bearing three postal marks and one stamp, and measuring 11 x 8 cm. Both in very good condition, from the autograph collection of Seymour C.J. Freeman-Matthews. The addressee, Seymour C.J. Freeman-Matthews was a collector of autographs and amassed a sizeable treasure of signatures with solicitations such as which led to this letter and autograph being penned by a great Arctic navigator. The letter reads as follows: "Dear Sir, I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 5th inst. and, in reply, have much pleasure in complying with your request, Believe me. - S.n., Cassis 2 Novembre 1933, 13,5x21,5cm, une feuille. - Belle et amusante lettre manuscrite signée de Roger Martin du Gard adressée depuis Cassis à Alice Rim (3 pages et demi, 54 lignes à l'encre noire) dans laquelle il encense lyriquement les bienfaits des délicieuses sucreries parisiennes que lui fait parvenir sa correspondante : "... Et quelles sucreries ! Si Dieu pouvait goûter ce que Boissier fabrique avec ses fruits, comme il serait honteux des grossiers produits de ses arbres, et comme il aurait envie de recommencer sa création..." Il loue également la quiétude du Cassis sans estivants : "Plus d'autos, plus de poussière, plus de phonos, plus de sirènes entre deux vagues... C'est le beau, clair et silencieux Cassis authentique, où rien ne gêne le travail..." et le plaisir de lire "Voilà", revue dans laquelle collabore Carlo Rim en tant que dessinateur : "... pas un moucheron de Cassis qui ne s'imagine avoir collaboré avec Carlo Rim, et son livre sera ici une oeuvre collective, nationale...", plaisir partagé par tous les cassidains : "... je ne sais comment réagissent les puissants de Marseille qu'il égratigne si gaillardement.
