‎Eugene III, Pope (ca. 1080-1153).‎

‎Papal bull. Altissiodorum [Auxerre], 26. X. 1147.‎

‎Large folio (555 x 420 mm). Latin manuscript on vellum. 1 p. Exceedingly rare document from the third year of Eugene's papacy (1145-1153), concerning the Cistercian Abbey of Barzelle (Indre), with the Pope's rota, signature "Ego Eugenius catholice ecclie eps" (chancery), probably autograph subscription, and the valedictory Benevalete monogram. - Addressing the 1st Abbot of Barzelle named Foucher, Eugene places the monastery under his protection and confirms its rights and possessions, comprising the territory and forest of Barzelle and several smaller properties (pastures, manors, vineyards) along the river Nahon between Barzelle and Valençay: "Religiolorum locorum cura nos admonet de eorum pace arquibus utilitate sollicite cogitare. Nec dubio a siservorum dei petitionibus benigne concurrim clemente in nostris oportunitatibus dum repetimus. Ideoquibus dilecti in dno filii nostris justis postulationibus clementer annuim et Barzellacense monasterium inque divino mancipiati estis obsequio sub beati Perri et nostra protectione suspicimere presentis scripti privilegio comunimus. Statuentes ut quascumque possessiones quecumquibus bona inpresentiarum juste [...]". - Founded in 1137 as a filial house of the Le Landais Abbey, which went back to L'Aumône, the 7th filial house of Cîteaux Abbey, the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Barzelle never reached the size and significance to found filial abbeys of its own. The church of the monastery was not consecrated until 1219. - Born as Bernardo Pignatelli, or possibly Paganelli, in Pisa, Eugene III was the first of four Cistercian Popes and was heavily influenced by his friend and teacher Bernard of Clairvaux. Although Bernard initially condemned the election of Eugene, who came from humble origins and had never been a cardinal, he dominated the pontificate, which led to conflicts with the College of Cardinals. Most importantly, Bernard of Clairvaux played a central role in Eugene's announcement of the catastrophic Second Crusade in 1145 and its propagation. Almost for the entirety of his papacy Eugene III could not reside in Rome, due to the uprising led by Giordano Pierleoni in 1143 and the subsequent foundation of the Commune of Rome (1143-93), which renounced the temporal power of the Pope. Therefore, Eugene held synods in Paris, Reims, and Trier, mostly residing in various French cities, in Viterbo and in Tusculum. - Counter-signed by two cardinal-deacons, two cardinal-priests, and two bishops, including Alberic of Ostia (1080-1148) and Imar of Tusculum (d. 1161). First line in majuscules. With an authentication of the Papal Chancery to the lower margin. - Traces of folds. Some browning and somewhat stained. The original bulla (leaden seal) is missing. - A later copy of the bull on paper can be found in the departmental archive of Indre (H5). Full transcription on request.‎

‎Wissenschaftlicher Brief an einen Kollegen, "die Hitze Wiens fliehend": [...] Was das laute Sprechen einsamer Spaziergänger anbelangt, so bin ich über dessen Erklärung ziemlich ähnlicher Meinung, wie Sie, nur würde ich dieselbe etwas concreter dahin zusammenfassen: Wir pflegen vielfach in Worten zu denken; bei der geistigen Reproduction eines Wortes machen wir gewöhnlich und unwillkürlich sehr schwache Bewegungen mit unseren Sprachorganen, welche dem gedachten Worte entsprechen [...] Bei sehr lebhaften Individuen, oder bei grosser Aufregung werden diese Bewegungsinnervationen so stark, dass sie zum eigentlichen Sprechen führen. Dasselbe ist im Alkoholrausch der Fall, der ja überhaupt durch die Unsicherheit im Maasse der Innervationen charakterisiert ist. Was das Gestikuliren anbelangt, so hat dasselbe, meines Erachtens, jedenfalls einen ähnlichen Ursprung, doch dürften die unbewussten Innervationen dieses Falles sich nicht unter einen so allgemeinen Gesichtspunkt bringen lassen. Es handelt sich eben auch um das Übergreifen von Innervationen in der Gehirnsrinde auf Gebiete, welche nicht willkürlich in Action gesetzt werden, und sind analog der Erscheinung dass die meisten Menschen bei intensiver Muskelaktion z. B. des rechten Armes auch die Gesichtsmuskeln verziehen, und zwar hauptsächlich auf derselben Seite [...]" - Exner von Ewarten ist der Vater der vergleichenden Physiologie, der Hirnforschung und der Wahrnehmungspsychologie aus physiologischer Sicht.‎

‎Ecrivain républicain né à Salon de Provence, Jean Charles Expilly (1814-1886) fut chargé par Émile Olivier, commissaire de la République dans les Bouches-du-Rhône, en février 1848, d’une mission gouvernementale dans ce même département. Il écrit ici depuis la prison à l’écrivain et homme politique Taxile Delord (1815-1877).‎

‎Bel ensemble de lettres du journaliste, écrivain et voyageur né à en Martinique, Xavier Eyma (1816-1876). Il voyagera notamment aux Etats-Unis qui lui donneront la matière de plusieurs récits de récits et romans dont «Les Peaux-Rouges, scènes de la vie des Indiens», publié en 1854, qu’il évoque dans la première lettre. Xavier Eyma dénoncera plus tard la déportation des Séminoles et le massacre des indiens.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph letter signed (ALS) 'Eyubzâde Lâmi' Ömer' addressed to his aunt. 26,5x20 cm. In Ottoman script. 1 p. Full. Folded. It starts with 'My dear aunt'. He describes his travel during sixteen days from Trebizond to Anvers, Belgium by a ship and his memoirs in the capital of Antwerp province in the Flemish Region of Belgium. 'Eyubzade'family of Trebizond, especially settled in Maçka region, is a well-established and very important family that raised prominent individuals in the 18th and 19th centuries and played important roles in the social and economic life of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey. The family served in 'Maçka voivodalik' from 1764 to 1837. In the period after the declaration of the Tanzimat, the role of family members who held administrative positions in the Trabzon bureaucracy is very important as well in regard to the central administration-local bureaucracy-gentry triangle. Eyübzade Mehmed Hamdi Efendi was the writer of 'Safahat-i Hayatim' book who was also the grandfather of Bedri Rahmi Eyuboglu, (1911-1975), who was a famous Turkish poet and painter.‎

The authors investigate a wide-range of topics such as the development and application of the Beneventan script, comparative codicology, uses of early liturgical manuscripts, medieval artes and biblical texts and their readers, and the reception and dissemination of classical texts during the Italian Renaissance. Since 1970, Virginia Brown has been a Senior Research Fellow at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies. She is recognized as one of the world's leading authorities in classical reception and Latin palaeography. Her numerous publications on the Beneventan script have dramatically altered our knowledge of the dissemination of this southern Italian book hand from 800 to 1600. ‎These volumes catalogue more than 200 botanical drawings from the Erbario Miniato, an early seventeenth-century herbal made for Federico Cesi and acquired by Cassiano after Cesi's death in 1630. Also included are a further sixty or so loose sheets that originally formed a companion volume, broken up in the eighteenth century, and botanical drawings commissioned by Cassiano and Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo. Most of the drawings depict the native flora of central Italy, but mycological specimens, rarities from across Europe and recently imported species such as the crown imperial, the tobacco plant, the tomato and the aubergine are also represented. ‎In its understated way, this work establishes several theses each one of which, taken separately, could reasonably be considered sensational. First we have the discovery of the autograph of Cassiodorus. In shorthand, as one would expect from a busy man with a strong sense of time management, it testifies that Cassiodorus reviewed (Cassiodorus legi), or verified (perlegi Cassiodorus) a text. The signature occurs in codices that had already, through other considerations, been associated with Vivarium, and becomes in turn a strong criterion for the identification of works not previously associated with the Calabrian foundation. In some manuscripts a hand already known as 'manus prima', can now be identified with those of scribes active at Vivarium. These hands were not simply copying orthodox texts, but critically examining those written by authors of different persuasions: we know now that a codex well-known for its Arian scholia was studied and annotated at Vivarium. Cassiodorus and his team of writers/translators were squirreling away on texts by Church Fathers and heretics, analysing them, taking from them what could be suitable, reading everything. So, Vivarium was a militantly Chalcedonian monastery, but also one where the alternatives, dubbed by modern scholars 'Arian scholia' were duly studied and annotated. These essays by Fabio Troncarelli are an example of 'integral palaeography' in the sense of the definition, by now a classic, of Leonard E. Boyle (Medieval Latin Palaeography, Author's Preface, p. xv). ‎From Augustine to Anselm: The Influence of De trinitate on the Monologion,‎

‎Anselm (1033-1109) described the Monologion, his first major theological work, as a model meditation on the divine essence; and he enjoined his potential critics to read Augustine's De trinitate diligently and then judge the Monologion by it. In following Anselm's admonition, I have paid particular attention to Anselm's claims about the persuasiveness of his arguments, and probed the cogency of some of the many arguments that make up the Monologion. The result is something like a critical companion to the Monologion. It is not meant to replace an actual reading of the Monologion, which is an experience worth having, since no interpretation or paraphrase can capture the feeling of wading through Anselm's analytic arguments. And I have resisted the common tendency of reading the Monologion merely as a prelude to its more evocative sequel, the Proslogion. Because Anselm's arguments attend to fundamental themes in philosophical theology, this book also provides comment on the state of early medieval philosophical theology and Anselm's unique contribution to it. The book has implications not only for our understanding of Anselm's thought and its relation to ancient and early medieval Christian tradition, but also for the ways in which theologians and philosophers since Anselm have appropriated his ideas. Since a good deal of that appropriation often overlooks the Monologion, this study should help towards a re-orientation to Anselm and his relevance to contemporary debates about theological method in general and analytic theology in particular.
