‎Form and content of instruction in Anglo-Saxon England in the light of contemporary manuscript evidence Papers presented at the International Conference, Udine, 6-8 April 2006‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2007 Hardcover. XIII 546 p., 2 b/w ill. 4 colour ill., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503525910.‎

‎The essays collected in this volume focus on a prominent aspect of Anglo-Saxon culture: educational texts and the Insular manuscripts which have preserved them. The English imported manuscripts and texts from the Continent, whilst a series of foreign masters, from Theodore of Tarsus to Abbo of Fleury, brought with them knowledge of works which were being studied in Continental schools. Although monastic education played a leading role for the entire Anglo-Saxon period, it was in the second half of the tenth and early eleventh centuries that it reached its zenith, with its renewed importance and the presence of energetic masters such as AEthelwold and AElfric. The indebtedness to Continental programs of study is evident at each step, beginning with the Disticha Catonis. Nevertheless, a number of texts initially designed for a Latin-speaking milieu appear to have been abandoned (for instance in the field of grammar) in favour of new teaching tools. Besides texts which were part of the standard curriculum, Anglo-Saxon manuscripts provide abundant evidence of other learning and teaching instruments, in particular those for a specialized class of laymen, the Old English laece, the healer or physician. Medicine occupies a relevant place in the book production of late Anglo-Saxon England and, in this field too, knowledge from very far afield was preserved and reshaped. All these essays, many by leading scholars in the various fields, explore these issues by analysing the actual manuscripts, their layout and contents. They show how miscellaneous collections of treatises in medieval codices had an internal logic, and highlight how crucial manuscripts are to the study of medieval culture.‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2010 Hardcover in dusjacket, IV 268 p., 184 colour ill., 220 x 280 mm,Languages: French. ISBN 9782503534312.‎

‎Manuscripts of the 'Evangelium Nicodemi', A Census.‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 1994 Hardcover. 292 p., 165 x 245 mm, Languages: English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9780888443700.‎

‎The so-called Evangelium Nicodmi (EN), a fifth-century apocryphal passion narrative, showed remarkable vitality throughout the Middle Ages and by the close of the period established itself as one of the most influential religious texts, its authority approaching - though not often attaining - that of the canonical gospels. The importance of the EN for the religious culture of the Middle Ages has long been recognized, yet its scope and vicissitudes, its gradual evolution and transmission, have occasioned but a few tentative explorations. The reason for this paucity of detailed studies and for the continued absence of a comprehensive edition of the EN lies in the circumstances that make them all the more desirable - the apocryphon's enormous popularity in the Middle Ages and, as a natural corollary, the daunting abundance of extant manuscripts. Manuscripts of the Evangelium Nicodemi offers the first comprehensive listing of all known Latin manuscripts of the apocryphon. Descriptions of individual manuscripts provide information about the coodices (writing material, number of folios, size, date, place of origin, scribes, owners, contents) and about the texts those codices contain (incipits and explicit of the texts that make up the Evangelium). A series of five analytical and interpretative indexes serves as a guide to the composition of the Evangelium and its satellites, to the chronology of the manuscripts, to their contents, and to persons and places connected with them. The information gathered in this volume may be of assistance in studying the sources of vernacular translations of the Evangelium, patterns of its ownership and readership, medieval attitudes towards it, and the dynamics of its textual evolution; in investigating scribal practices of selection and compilation; and in identifying manuscripts of other apocrypha.‎

‎Catalogue of Western Book Illumination in the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Cambridge Colleges. Part Three: France: Volume One: c. 1000 - c. 1250‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2015 Hardcover with dusjacket, 296 p., 382 colour ill., 230 x 330 mm, 2015 Languages: English. ISBN 9781909400375.‎

‎This volume contains an impressive range of texts, from Horace (Cat. 17) and Ovid (Cat. 61) to the earliest known copy of the Collectio Lanfranci (Cat. 5) and Gerard of Cremona?s translations of Rasis? works (Cat. 93). The bulk, however, consists of Bibles of two kinds: imposing glossed books, produced in great numbers in the twelfth-century, and their thirteenth-century successors, the compact pandects. Both categories include some of the most richly illuminated French manuscripts of the period. Among the former are two deluxe sets made for Thomas Becket, the first completed while he was in exile in Pontigny and Sens from 1164 until 1170 (Cat. 27-31), the second edited after his martyrdom by his secretary Herbert of Bosham (Cat. 32-34). The majority of the thirteenth-century Bibles are so-called ?Paris? or ?pocket? Bibles produced from the 1220s onwards, mostly in Paris, and containing the biblical books in a standard order. They are illuminated in a variety of figure and ornamental styles, some comparable to the Bibles moralisees of c.1220-1240 (e.g. Cat. 72), others bearing no resemblance to them (e.g. Cat. 73). There are also notable exceptions of complete Bibles made not in Paris, but in North-Eastern France or Champagne (e.g. Cat. 70), and displaying iconography, figure styles and order of books different from those found in their better-known Parisian contemporaries. We hope that the inclusion of numerous images in full colour representing Bibles illuminated in all of these different styles will inspire and support further research, especially on the ornamental initials which deserve more attention. While this volume contains outstanding examples of illumination, notably the work of the itinerant Simon Master (Cat. 46), it also includes books that are modest in artistic terms, but valuable in other ways. Among them is a glossed Ezekiel which boasts one of the finest Romanesque bindings to survive in Cambridge collections, made almost certainly in Paris c.1160-1170 (Cat. 41). Other aesthetically unassuming volumes form important groups of material, for instance, the books assembled by Master Robert Amiclas during his forty years in France and given or sold by him to the Cistercian Abbey of Buildwas in Shropshire (Cat. 20-26, 37).‎

‎Renaissance Manuscripts: The Sixteenth Century‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2015 Hardcovers with dusjackets, 2 vol., 721 p., 321 b/w ill. + 55 colour ill., 230 x 330 mm, Languages: English. ISBN 9781872501307.‎

‎This publication is the first comprehensive survey to establish the importance of Renaissance manuscript illumination in the history of sixteenth-century French art. Although illustrated printed books were circulating freely by the beginning of the sixteenth century, patronage of manuscripts became all the more special to the ruling elite, and commissions from the court, aristocratic circles and the higher clergy resulted in a surge of artistic creativity that produced a wide range of outstanding illustrated works from devotional books to translations of classical and humanistic texts. While continuing the tradition of French figurative art, ornamentation became a major element in the style of the period, with frames and borders becoming a significant feature of the aesthetic impact of the illuminated page. One hundred manuscripts have been chosen for this survey to represent the artistic excellence of French book production of the period, as well as to demonstrate the stylistic relationships between artists and between books that may be seen to form distinct groups. Many years of research enabled the author to identify the hands of individual illuminators, both named and anonymous, and to connect these to a particular artistic milieu or regional group. Moreover, not only are the stylistic aspects of the manuscripts analysed, but entirely new information regarding authorship, patronage and historical context are revealed here of hitherto unstudied material. The author, Myra Orth, completed her catalogue and introductory texts shortly before her sad death some years ago. Since that time, a number of scholars ? specialists in French manuscripts studies of the period ? have helped to update the literature that has more recently appeared relating to the manuscripts catalogued and to the individual artists and workshops discussed. Present locations of manuscripts that may have changed ownership since Dr Orth?s submission of her work have also been noted. To accompany the detailed catalogue, the publication includes a corpus of 360 illustrations that offers a significant visual conspectus of manuscript illumination of the period. In addition to the introductory text, the author also provides brief biographies of Artists and Scribes, Authors and Translators, and Patrons and Dedicatees Survey of Manuscripts Illuminated in France (HMMSF 4)‎

‎Spectacle for a Spanish Princess. The Festive Entry of Joanna of Castile into Brussels (1496)‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 440 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:240 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503594439.‎

‎Summary On the evening of 9 December 1496, Princess Joanna, Infanta of Castile, reaches the outskirts of Brussels where a procession of secular and ecclesiastical dignitaries welcomes her. After having been married to Philip the Fair in Lier, Joanna travelled to Brussels by herself. Equipped with torches and processional crosses, the citizens accompany her all the way to the heart of the city, the large market square with its magnificent town hall. The Berlin manuscript 78 D5 is the first illustrated report of an entry concentrating on one single lady. The manuscript is a treasure to all those interested in urban culture of the Early Modern period. The author of the festival booklet compares the well-lit city with the splendours of Troy and Carthage. Twenty-eight stage sets, or Tableaux Vivants, and an elaborate procession mirror the costly intellectual program presented to the sixteen-year-old princess. The carefully planned theatrical productions underscore themes of marriage, female virtues and the politics of war and peace. The program includes entertainments, soundscapes, and pyrotechnic amusements. The Latin texts are made available in English translation. The entire manuscript, with its sixty-three folios, is reproduced in colour. Eleven leading scholars present their new findings on this spectacular entry from an interdisciplinary approach. ‎Saints' Lives for Medieval English Nuns, I. A Study of the 'Lyves and Dethes' in Cambridge University Library, MS Additional 2604‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, xxxii + 398 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:24 b/w, 8 col., 5 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503545516.‎

‎Summary Cambridge University Library, MS Additional 2604 contains a unique prose legendary almost entirely of female saints, all of whom are virgins, martyrs, or nuns. The manuscript, which also has varied post-medieval items, is written in one hand probably dating from c. 1480 to c. 1510. This previously unstudied Middle English collection features twenty-two universal and native saints, both common (like John the Baptist and thelthryth) and rare (such as Wihtburh and Domitilla). These texts are dependent on a complex mixture of Latin sources and analogues. Specific linguistic and art-historical features, as well as attention to the predominant female saints of Ely and post-medieval provenance, suggest an East Anglian convent for the original readership. Through an exploration of the manuscript and its later ownership (both recusant and antiquarian), a discussion of its linguistic attributes, a consideration of local female monastic and book history, a comparison of hagiographical texts, and a wide-ranging source and analogue study, this Study fully contextualises these Middle English lives. The book concludes with a survey of the structural and stylistic aspects of the texts, followed by three appendices, and an extensive bibliography. The texts are edited for the first time in its companion volume, Saints' Lives for Medieval English Nuns, II: An Edition of the 'Lyves and Dethes' in Cambridge University Library, MS Additional 2604. ‎Summary By comparison with Latin Europe, Anglo-Saxon civilization is notable for the amount of literature preserved in contemporary manuscripts in the vernacular language, formerly called ?Anglo-Saxon' but now more usually called ?Old English'. This literature includes some remarkable poetry, which is the subject of the present collection of essays. Some of the earliest poems may well have been written at a time when northern England held the intellectual leadership of Europe. The approach is holistic, investigating important issues in the manuscripts that affect the integrity of the texts to be studied or the way they relate to each other, examining metrical issues that affect the way the poems are appreciated for their compositional skill, studying particular textual problems that require elucidation or even emendation to make the meaning clear, and finally offering readings of particular poems focussing on themes that are central to Old English poetry. A postscript examines Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky, which is presented as a ?Stanza of Anglo-Saxon Poetry'. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Section A: Manuscripts Foreword 1. ‎Learning Hebrew in Medieval England. Christian Scholars and the Longleat House Grammar‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 204 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:24 col., Language: English. ISBN 9780888442307.‎

‎Summary For inquisitive Christian minds in the Middle Ages, there were many reasons to learn Hebrew. The rediscovery of classical sources and Aristotelian philosophy and the engagement with Graeco-Arabic sciences that marked the renaissance of the twelfth century also brought about an acute awareness of the need for a philological understanding of the Hebrew language. In England in particular, various factors combined to encourage and facilitate the study of Hebrew texts, not only among well-known writers but also among English scholars whose names have not been preserved. They nevertheless produced bilingual Hebrew-Latin manuscripts in collaboration with Jewish scribes, along with manuals, textbooks, and reference aids to facilitate access to the sources. This volume presents an edition and analysis of one such learning tool: a thirteenth-century grammar written in Hebrew, Latin, and Anglo-Norman French (the vernacular language of the Jews of England) in a complex combination of Hebrew and Latin alphabets. ‎Summary Medieval astronomers used tables to solve most of the problems they faced. These tables were generally assembled in sets, which constituted genuine tool-boxes aimed at facilitating the task of practitioners of astronomy. In the early fourteenth century, the set of tables compiled by the astronomers at the service of King Alfonso X of Castile and Le n (d. 1284), reached Paris, where several scholars linked to the university recast them and generated new tables. John of Lign res, one of the earliest Alfonsine astronomers, assembled his own set of astronomical tables, mainly building on the work of previous Muslim and Jewish astronomers in the Iberian Peninsula, especially in Toledo. Two major sets had been compiled in this town: one in Arabic, the Toledan Tables, during the second half of the eleventh century, and the Castilian Alfonsine Tables, under the patronage of King Alfonso. This monograph provides for the first time an edition of the Tables of 1322 by John of Lign res. It is the earliest major set of astronomical tables to be compiled in Latin astronomy. It was widely distributed and is found in about fifty manuscripts. A great number of the tables were borrowed directly from the work of the Toledan astronomers, while others were adapted to the meridian of Paris, and many were later transferred to the standard version of the Parisian Alfonsine Tables. Therefore, John of Lign res' set can be considered as an intermediary work between the Toledan Tables and the Parisian Alfonsine Tables. ‎Summary A collaborative investigation of one of the best-known works of late medieval European literature, the Franco-Burgundian collection of short stories known as the Cent Nouvelles nouvelles. Modelled loosely on Boccaccio's Decameron and incorporating elements from Old French fabliaux as well as Poggio Bracciolini's Liber Facetiarum, the anonymous collection attributes its morally challenging and frequently humorous tales to named narrators including Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy and Louis of Luxembourg, Count of Saint Pol. The contribution of this new volume of essays is threefold: - empirical, in that it brings entirely new interdisciplinary insights into the study of the genesis and reception of the work; - methodological, in that it integrates study of the text within a 360-degree evaluation of the work's manuscript and early printed context; and - conceptual, in that it seeks to understand the social dimensions of textual production and consumption. These approaches unite ten principal contributions by specialists in the fields of art history, book history, court history and linguistics from France, the Netherlands, the USA and the UK. ‎Summary This volume of twelve essays aims to honour the career and scholarship of Lesley Smith. The first section begins with two witnesses to Lesley's excellence as teacher and culminates with an appreciation of her as a scholar. The second section explores the scholarly terrain in which Lesley has made her most signal contributions: the material and cultural sites and artefacts within and by which the Christian Scriptures emerged as a field of theoretical inquiry in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The third and final section explores Latin Christian use of scriptural inquiry and understanding so as to engage scholarly and religious traditions outside those of the Latin Church. ‎Summary The present book is a result of the Turfan studies carried out at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities since more than 100 years. The edition of Old Uyghur fragments that could be assigned to various texts about the Bodhisattva Avalokite?vara provides an insight into the history of Central Asian Buddhism. The monograph is accompanied by commentaries to a large number of subjects related to Tantric Buddhism of the Middle Ages. Some of the manuscripts have illustrations of the 40 objects held in the hands of the Bodhisattva Avalokite?vara of thousand arms and eyes well-known from statues and temple banners from Turfan, Dunhuang as well as China, Korea, and Japan. The Old Uyghur manuscripts are mainly based on Chinese originals of the Mijiao section (T. 1057, T. 1060, T. 1064 and T. 1982). One booklet was translated from a Tibetan original. The book concludes with a word index as a complement for the study of the Old Uyghur lexicon. ‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2022 Paperback, 328 pages, Size:210 x 270 mm, Illustrations:47 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9781912554270.‎

‎Summary This is the ninth volume in a continuing series of publications listing and identifying all illustrations contained in English manuscripts from the time of Chaucer to Henry VIII. Because representations of all types are included?from miniatures to marginalia? the series provides unparalleled reference to imagery in the long fifteenth century. The present fascicle, the second of two devoted to the collections in Cambridge, catalogues 553 manuscripts for eleven colleges and can be used as a search tool for manuscripts available on line. The manuscript entries in the catalogue note the subject of every illustration, all of which are fully indexed in the index of pictorial subjects. Entries for alchemy and medicine are particularly rich in this fascicle; the largest entry is for costume. The broad range of pictorial information makes the Cambridge fascicles useful supplements to the fifth volume of A Catalogue of Western Illumination in the Fitzwilliam Museum and Cambridge Colleges. Like the other fascicles in the series, Cambridge II includes a manual for users, an extensive glossary of subjects and terms, indexes of authors, texts and incipits, as well as a list of manuscripts with coats of arms. There are forty-seven black and white illustrations.‎

‎Summary Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts (1814-1906), descendant of a wealthy and well-known family of bankers, inherited quite young, through a series of unpredictable circumstances, the enormous fortune of Thomas Coutts, her maternal grand-father. She spent most of her long life in London, where she occupied a prominent position in society, becoming well-known not only for her splendid life-style and her important literary and political acquaintances, as, for instance, Charles Dickens and Admiral Nelson, but also for her active role as a philanthropist. This book explores a little-known side of her life; although she did not know Greek, she became the owner of ca. 100 Greek manuscripts, mostly theological, datable between the tenth and the sixteenth century, a part of which she donated to Highgate School. The manuscripts, with all the Baroness's possessions, were dispersed at auction in 1921 and in 1987 and are now mainly divided between American and European University Libraries. This book has identified for the first time the Baroness's Greek manuscripts, located and described them in detail, with special attention to their script style and their origin, adding to their description one or two plates of each codex.

‎Summary For manuscript historians, the Bible in the form of a codex represents a handcrafted object of the utmost importance: it was the sacred text par excellence and served as a vital reference point in the lives of medieval monks. In addition, it functioned as an indispensable tool for daily liturgical celebration, and as a study text and individual reading book for the purpose of moral edification. The manuscript collection of the Montecassino Abbey presents an exemplary case study, both for the total number of biblical manuscripts it preserves (just under a hundred, and for the diversity of types (complete 'monolithic' Bibles, Old and/or New Testament sequences of varying size and physiognomy, and individual glossed books with commentary beside the text), as well as for the presence of a significant group of codices in Beneventan minuscule produced for internal use within the same Abbey or in its dependencies in a period centered around the eleventh century (with sporadic extensions into the twelfth and thirteenth). The present catalogue aims to deepen our current knowledge of the presence, transmission and reception of the Bible in one of the most important and emblematic medieval Benedictine monasteries. ‎Illuminated Manuscript Production in Medieval Iceland. Literary and Artistic Activities of the Monastery at Helgafell in the Fourteenth Century‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 275 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:192 b/w, 22 col., 47 tables b/w., 2 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503589022.‎

‎Summary This book examines a cultural revolution that took place in the Scandinavian artistic landscape during the medieval period. Within just one generation (c. 1340-1400), the Augustinian monastery of Helgafell became the most important centre of illuminated manuscript production in western Iceland. By conducting interdisciplinary research that combines methodologies and sources from the fields of Art History, Old Norse-Icelandic manuscript studies, codicology, and Scandinavian history, this book explores both the illuminated manuscripts produced at Helgafell and the cultural and historical setting of the manuscript production. Equally, the book explores the broader European contexts of manuscript production at Helgafell, comparing the similar domestic artistic monuments and relevant historical evidence of Norwich and surrounding East Anglia in England, northern France, and the region between Bergen and Trondheim in western Norway. The book proposes that most of these workshops are related to ecclesiastical networks, as well as secular trade in the North Sea, which became an important economic factor to western Icelandic society in the fourteenth century. The book thereby contributes to a new and multidisciplinary area of research that studies not only one but several European cultures in relation to similar domestic artistic monuments and relevant historical evidence. It offers a detailed account of this cultural site in relation to its scribal and artistic connections with other ecclesiastical and secular scriptoria in the broader North Atlantic region. ‎Poetry, Art, and Music in Guillaume de Machaut's Earliest Manuscript (BnF fr. 1586)‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Paperback, 476 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:119 col., 22 tables b/w., 1 maps b/w, 18 musical examples, Language: English. ISBN 9782503586915.‎

‎Summary Around the middle of a career lasting over forty years, Guillaume de Machaut (c.1300-77) was afforded an outstanding opportunity to present his oeuvre in a book. The occasion arose in the late 1340s, when a special manuscript was commissioned, perhaps by Queen Jeanne de Bourgogne, for the first time collecting all of Machaut's works, including narrative poems, lyrical poems, musical settings of lyrics, and motets. The manuscript would celebrate Bonne of Luxembourg, the wife of a future king of France. Only the royal treasury could have funded the extraordinary team of craftsmen involved in its production - from the careful preparation of fine parchment, to the calligraphy and ornament of the text, to the carefully copied innovative ars nova musical notation, to the miniatures painted in a shop directed by one of the greatest illuminators in France. Then Bonne died of the Black Death in 1349, just before the manuscript was completed. It would be finished for her son, the future King Charles the Wise. Although Machaut would go on to supervise other manuscripts, none were so luxuriously executed as his first complete-works manuscript (Paris, Biblioth que nationale de France, fr. 1586), known today as Machaut MS C. The present volume, the first dedicated entirely to MS C, offers a multidisciplinary collection of essays written by fourteen leading scholars, who provide innovative approaches to literary, musical, art-historical, and manuscript studies. It is replete with images, including over sixty colour reproductions from MS C itself. ‎Summary In the fall of 2016 an international scholarly conference accompanied the exhibition Beyond Words: Illuminated Manuscripts in Boston Collections. The speakers were chosen because of their expertise and because they were known to have research underway pertaining to important manuscripts in the exhibition. The aim of both exhibition and conference was to provide a broad overview of the history of patronage and book production over the course of the High and late Middle Ages, to the extent that the eclectic holdings of Boston-area institutions permitted. Most of the papers delivered at the conference have been collected as essays in this abundantly illustrated volume which, while still linked to the exhibition, now has an independent purpose. Just as the essays cover a wide range of topics, all relating to the history of the book, but also, inter alia, to the history of law, liturgy, literature, and libraries as well as to devotion, theology, and art, so too the approaches adopted by the contributors are as varied as the materials they study, ranging from paleography, codicology, and provenance research to painstaking reconstructions of historical patterns of patronage and the interpretative strategies of authors and artists. What results is not simply a wealth of fascinating insights into individual illuminated books, their makers, and their readers, but also an indication of how much remains to be learned about the materials to which the exhibition served as no more than an introduction. ‎Armenian Manuscripts. Catalogues, Collections, Libraries: 2nd revised edition‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, xix + 463 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Language(s):English, Armenian. ISBN 9782503590349.‎

‎Summary Hellenists know the services rendered by the R pertoire des catalogues de manuscrits grecs of Marcel Richard and Jean-Marie Olivier. It is an indispensable heuristic tool, but also a witness to the development of codicology and cultural history. Such a tool was lacking for specialists of Armenian manuscripts, philologists, linguists, and art historians. Armenian Manuscripts. Catalogues, Collections, Libraries (in English) is the second edition, revised and updated, of the R pertoire des biblioth ques et des catalogues de manuscrits arm niens first published in 1992. It includes the four supplements published in the journal Le Mus on in 1995, 2000, 2004, and 2019, as well as new sections devoted e.g. to the main copy centers of Armenian manuscripts. The book provides a full bibliography on all repositories of Armenian manuscripts in the world, public and private, large and small. It also gives many insights about the fate of Armenian manuscripts in the course of history: where and when they have been produced, mostly in medieval monastic centers, how they escaped invasions, fires, thefts and even destructions linked to the genocide of the Armenians, and finally how they ended up in private or public collections where they can be studied and admired today. Tables of concordance between current and old references enable one to locate manuscripts that are thought to have disappeared or to find more complete descriptions in an old catalogue than are given in recent lists. The volume also includes an impressive index of manuscripts. ‎Summary An intriguing development in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth-century Christian Hebraism is how and why Christian scholars came to produce their own Hebrew books. Jewish Book - Christian Book: Hebrew Manuscripts in Transition between Jews and Christians in the Context of German Humanism offers a novel examination of this phenomenon in light of nearly unknown Hebrew manuscripts produced by German Hebraists in that period. Anticipating Hebraist printed editions, the Hebraist manuscript copies of Jewish texts represent one of the earliest attempts of Christians to independently form a stock of Jewish literature, which would meet their scholarly needs and interests, and embody a unique encounter of Jewish and Christian views of the Hebrew text and book. How Hebraist copyists coped with the inherent "Jewishness" of the Hebrew texts and in what ways they transformed and adapted them both textually and materially to serve Christian audience are among the key questions discussed in this study. ‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, vi + 369 pages, Size:150 x 230 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9780888448330.‎

‎Summary This volume pays homage to manuscripts and early printed books as material witnesses in the Middle Ages. The essays discuss broad questions relating to the partisan interpretation of texts, but they also illustrate how small details of format, script, and decoration uncover the text, its context, and its reception. Some articles explore scientific methods, examining whether social network analysis can offer an advance over traditional methods of establishing textual connections and using statistics to understand the transmission of ancillary materials. Others present critical editions and contextualize lost genres, providing a first edition of an unedited summary of Ovid's Metamorphoses steeped in the Boccaccian genealogical tradition, exploring mock funeral eulogies for animals, and discussing the variety of texts that pay witness to Ovid's penetration into vernacular literature. A closing brace of essays catalogue collections and reflect on changing trends in the study of manuscripts. ‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 296 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503582931.‎

‎Summary The Pore Caitif is an anonymous late fourteenth-century manual of devotion and religious instruction destined for a lay readership. The text, in its various forms, circulated widely and was evidently very popular, as the fifty of so extant manuscripts and fragments readily attest. Of them, no fewer that twenty-eight transmit a full text showing remarkable fidelity to the now presumably lost archetype. As such, the Pore Caitif invites comparison with the considerable production and diffusion of religious texts in English which figure prominently in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. In this respect, it is to note that some critics have argued for the presence of Lollard interpolators or commentators in a number of the extant manuscripts, including the influence of the Wycliffite Bible translation. This edition will be published in two volumes. This, the first, provides a full Introduction to the manuscripts and their transmission, classifying them in groups, while examining some of the trends observable in some of the more notable variants they inevitably preserve. A commentary on the text is followed by a full glossary. The second volume will discuss manuscript relationships and the problems arising therefrom. ‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, 327 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:1 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503573397.‎

‎Summary This is the third and final volume describing manuscripts and fragments in British libraries containing commentaries and glosses on the Latin Aristotle. It covers institutional libraries from Aberdeen to York, including cathedral libraries, and lists 193 main items (including fragments dismembered from several books), dating from the twelfth century until c.1500. While many of these manuscripts have come to Britain from elsewhere in Europe and were only acquired post-1500, they represent teaching and learning not only in the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge but also in continental universities. A majority of them are now held in the British Library, London, and many have not been fully described before. The volume also includes addenda from Oxford and Cambridge, and four indexes are provided to facilitate searching the main text.‎

‎Summary The current volume presents ten different studies dealing with the final stages of Hebrew book art production in medieval Iberia. Ranging from the Farhi Codex, copied and illuminated in the late 14th century, to the Philadelphia Bible, copied and illuminated in Lisbon in 1496, this volume discusses a wide scope of topics related with the production, consumption and circulation of medieval decorated Hebrew manuscripts. Among the issues discussed in this volume we highlight the role played by three distinct artistic languages (Mud jar, Late Gothic and Renaissance) in the shapping of 15th-century Sephardic illumination, the codicological specificity of some solutions in terms of layout and the relation between the layout of these manuscripts and Hebrew incunabula, the use of geometric decoration in scientific diagrams, or the afterlife of these manuscripts in Europe and Asia following the expulsion of the Jews from Iberia.
