‎Summary Early medieval manuscripts were commonly annotated not only by glosses but also by annotation symbols. These graphic signs inserted in manuscript margins provided manuscript text with layers of additional meaning and functionality. From the most common signs marking biblical quotations and passages of interest to the sophisticated systems of signs used by some of the early medieval scholars, annotation symbols represent perhaps the most common form of marginalia encountered in early medieval books. Yet, their non-verbal character proved a serious obstacle to their understanding and appreciation. This book represents the first systematic study of annotation symbols used in the Latin West between c. 400 and c. 900. Combining paleographic evidence with the evidence of written sources such as late antique and early medieval lists of signs, this book identifies the most important communities of sign users and conventions in use in the early Middle Ages. It explores some of the notable differences between regions, periods, linguistic communities and classes of users and reconstructs a fascinating history of the practice of using signs, rather than words, to annotate text. Er organisierte die österreichische Universitätsreform, die sich vornehmlich mit der Lehr- und Lernfreiheit und der Verbindung von Forschung und Lehre befasste. Schon schwer erkrankt ging er 1852 als Ministerialkommissär für das lombardisch-venezianische Schulwesen nach Oberitalien.‎

Rulemann Friedrich Eylert studierte Theologie an der Universität Halle. Nach seiner Promotion 1794 folgte er seinem Vater als Pfarrer an der reformierten Gemeinde in Hamm. 1806 wurde er auf Empfehlung des Freiherrn vom Stein zum Hof-, Garde- und Garnisonsprediger in Potsdam berufen und Seelsorger des preußischen Königspaares. Daneben war er der wichtigste Berater des preußischen Königs Friedrich Wilhlemm III. in kirchenpolitischen Fragen.‎

‎Bien que l'edition originale de l'Enseignement d'Amenemhet Ier a son fils Sesostris Ier remonte a 1841, ce n'est qu'apres bien des annees que les egyptologuqes lui ont prete toute l'attention qu'il merite. Il a fallu attendre le "Berliner Worterbuch-Projekt", dans le cadre duquel l'edition de textes litteraires s'est rapidement developpee entre 1890 et 1914, pour que G. Maspero en donne en 1914 une edition synoptique, enrichie d'un commentaire philologique qui demeure exemplaire. Dans la suite, nombre de travaux lui ont ete consacres, entre autres par W. Helck (1969), J.C. Foster (1981) et en dernier lieu H. Goedicke (1988), qui se sont appliques a rassembler les diverses versions apparues entre-temps. La presente edition a pour but de dresser le bilan de cette abondante recolte qui n'a cesse de s'accroitre dans le courant des annees. Elle constitue ainsi une base actualisee pour l'etude et l'interpretation de ce texte remarquable qui compte parmi les chefs-d'oeuvre de la litteratre sapientiale. Obwohl der agyptologischen Fachwelt bereits seit 1841 bekannt, schenkte man dem Text der "Lehre des Amenemhet" uber viele Jahrzehnte nur ein begrenztes Interesse. Erst im Zuge der konzentrierten Publikation literarischer Texte in den Jahren zwischen 1890 und 1914 im Rahmen des Berliner "Worterbuch-Projektes" erstellte G. Maspero (1914) die erste wissenschaftliche Synopse der "Lehre des Amenemhet", die besonders in ihrer philologischen Kommentierung als vorbildlich gelten darf. In regelmassigen Abstanden bemuhten sich seitdem unter anderem W. Helck (1969), J.L. Foster (1981) und zuletzt H. Goedicke (1988) die kontinuierlich wachsende Zahl an bekannten Textzeugen dieses bedeutenden literarischen Werkes zusammenzutragen und synoptisch zu editieren. Die hier vorliegende Zusammenstellung der Quellen zur "Lehre des Amenemhet" soll diese Tradition fortsetzen und dem ungebrochen grossen Interesse an dem literarischen Werk eine ubersichtliche und aktualisierte Materialbasis liefern. Since 1970, Virginia Brown has been a Senior Research Fellow at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies. She is recognized as one of the world's leading authorities in classical reception and Latin palaeography. Her numerous publications on the Beneventan script have dramatically altered our knowledge of the dissemination of this southern Italian book hand from 800 to 1600. ‎In its understated way, this work establishes several theses each one of which, taken separately, could reasonably be considered sensational. First we have the discovery of the autograph of Cassiodorus. In shorthand, as one would expect from a busy man with a strong sense of time management, it testifies that Cassiodorus reviewed (Cassiodorus legi), or verified (perlegi Cassiodorus) a text. The signature occurs in codices that had already, through other considerations, been associated with Vivarium, and becomes in turn a strong criterion for the identification of works not previously associated with the Calabrian foundation. In some manuscripts a hand already known as 'manus prima', can now be identified with those of scribes active at Vivarium. These hands were not simply copying orthodox texts, but critically examining those written by authors of different persuasions: we know now that a codex well-known for its Arian scholia was studied and annotated at Vivarium. Cassiodorus and his team of writers/translators were squirreling away on texts by Church Fathers and heretics, analysing them, taking from them what could be suitable, reading everything. So, Vivarium was a militantly Chalcedonian monastery, but also one where the alternatives, dubbed by modern scholars 'Arian scholia' were duly studied and annotated. These essays by Fabio Troncarelli are an example of 'integral palaeography' in the sense of the definition, by now a classic, of Leonard E. Boyle (Medieval Latin Palaeography, Author's Preface, p. xv). Through the highly specialised technique of demanding discipline, the author succeeds in reconstructing the intellectual climate and the historical setting of Vivarium. Languages : Italian.‎
