Orlando Furioso "Orlando Enraged" is a continuation of the "Orlando Innamorato" of Matteo Maria Boiardo which was left unfinished upon the author's death in 1494. It begins more or less at the point where Boiardo left it. Boiardo's tale is a classic chivalric romance of knights errantry on a quest. Though it retains the form and theme of the earlier work Aristo's is a thoroughly modern production of the Cinquecento. Along with thrilling adventure and complex plots it shows in it's pages the "culture of the contradiction" that appear so strongly in Erasmus and Rabelais. There is no room here to recount any details of the thrilling saga but we'd be pleased to provide a synopsis upon request. This is considered the best translation into English. Rare. The early owner of this set was Redmond Conyngham 1781-1846. Born in Philadelphia he inherited an estate in the county Donegal Ireland from his grandfather yielding �2000 a year and subsequently spent some time in Ireland. During his stay abroad he became intimate with Curran Grattan and other prominent Irishmen including his cousin William Conyngham Plunket afterward lord-chancellor of Ireland. On his return to the United States he settled in Sugarloaf Luzerne County graduated from Princeton and in 1815 served in the state House of Representatives; then from 1820-1824 the state Senate. After legislative service Conyngham moved to Lancaster county where he ran a print shop and devoted much of his time to antiquarian research; producing papers of historical interest to the American Philosophical Society and to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. He made a specialty of the early history of Pennsylvania and of Lancaster County in particular. His wife was Elizabeth Yeates a daughter of Supreme Court Judge Jaspar Yeates. Prior to this Sansovino also worked on the satires of Ariosto 14741533 separately published.<br>Â Â Â Â The text is divided into sections by author each of whom the editor introduces with a brief biography. A short abstract printed in roman precedes each poem printed in italic. Fine woodcut head- and tailpieces and a variety of initials in historiated patterned and factotum designs decorate the text; and the title-page features the woodcut printers' device of Truth personified flanked by an eagle a lion a bull and an angel representing the Four Evangelists.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Ownership inscription on front fly-leaf of Luigi Pagani Cesa possibly the Italian jurist born at Belluno in 1855 who served as a member of Parliament for 190413; and the words "penso che" "I think that . . ." written above in an earlier hand <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Adams A1691; CNCE 2806. Later glazed cream-colored boards title and date inked on upper spine small paper label on lower spine marbled red edges; boards soiled and front joint opening. Rare first edition of Orlando Furioso translated by the Elizabethan courtier and poet Sir John Harington 1560-1612 - the first English version of Ludovico Ariosto's 1454-1553 famous epic poem - here with its 47 full-page engravings enriched with exceptionally fine contemporary hand-coloring complete with extensive silver and gold accents and giving every appearance of being a presentation copy. Hand-coloring of this quality is outstandingly rare in any English work of this period and such an extensive suite of illustrations is very unusual for purely literary works. Containing "the best known engraved illustrations in an English book before 1700" Hodnett p. 46 Harington's Orlando Furioso represents a landmark in engraving in England an achievement that Harington himself highlighted in his prefatory comments on the "vse of the Pictures" in the book noting that its images "are all cut in brasse and most of them by the best workemen of that kinde" and that he had "not seene anie made in England better nor in deed any of this kinde in any booke." He further states that although England had produced some impressive illustrated volumes "all their figures are cut in wood & none in metall and in that respect inferior to these" fol. Ar. In these remarks "Harington gives us the first critical comment on book illustrating by an Englishman" Hodnett p. 46 and by citing the fine English woodcut books of "Liuy Gesner Alciats emblemes a booke de Spectris in Latin & in our tong the Chronicles the booke of Martyrs the book of hauking and hunting and M. Whitneys excellent Emblems" he announces his intention to produce an illustrated volume comparable to the best yet produced in England.
