‎SEMIRAMIS; A TRAGEDY. Translated from the French of M. De Voltaire .‎

‎London: Printed for G. Kearsly 1760. Small quarto pp. 1-4 1 2-76 drab boards. First edition in English. Semiramis ninth-century queen of Assyria present-day Iraq was until the early twentieth century a figure of legend that had been well-established as of the classical period: begotten of the fish-goddess Atargatis and fed by doves until her rescue by a royal shepherd; bride of general Onnes and successor to his power and eventually to the throne of Assyria; founder of Babylon and every other monument in the region; long-lived brave wise and sexually potent she was turned into a dove at her death and worshipped subsequently as a surrogate of the Assyrian fertility goddess Astarte. Modern archaeological research by Lehman-Haupt and others has largely replaced legend with history but the legend was still alive and well in Voltaire's time. She was a female personification of all that was gaudy and glorious in pre-Christian antiquity and she furnished good material for this tragedy Voltaire's preference in drama composed in 1748 a year after his conte philosophique ZADIG. Voltaire's play has probably had more continuing vitality as the foundation of the libretto of the Rossini opera "Semiramide" 1823 widely considered as one of the best and last operas in the Baroque style. ESTC T62226. The front paste-down bears the bookplate of Alaskan bibliographer James Wickersham who attached to the rear paste-down the mailing label with canceled stamp of the British bookseller McLeish & Sons from whom presumably he obtained this book. Lacks the advertising leaf at rear a very good copy. #140101 Printed for G. Kearsly unknown books‎

‎LA PUCELLE;; or The Maid of Orleans: A Poem in six cantos. From the French of M. De Voltaire with the author's preface and original notes Translated by Catherine Maria Bury Countess of Charleville‎

‎London: privately printed by Catherine Maria Bury Countess of Charleville 1796. First Edition large paper copy one of just 5. The first complete English translation. Large 8vo just under 24 cm pp. 227 218. Untrimmed. Bound in later 3/4 red morocco and plain boards rubbed along the extremities without the half title. "Mostly all of the copies were destroyed the freedom of the translation being considered injurious to the memory of Lady Charleville. Only 5 copies were printed on large paper. See the notes to the Renouard copy no. 1349- sale by Sotheby June 30 1834." The preface and notes cover 5 pages. ESTC; T137636.A nice clean tight set. A poem about Joan of Arc. From Wikipedia: "Voltaire was undoubtedly one of the most controversial writers and philosophers of the Enlightenment Age and The Maid of Orleans was also certainly one of his more contentious works. An epic and scandalous satire concerning the life of the not-yet-canonised Joan of Arc "the Maid of Orleans" the poem was outlawed burned and banned throughout a great portion of Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. Containing mockery and satirical commentary on the life and antics of its subject the poem itself has variously been described as "bawdy" and "licentious". Despite the often sexist and indecent contents of the text its notoriety and contraband status made it one of the most widely read texts concerning Joan of Arc for several centuries. Circulating throughout the banned regions by often surreptitious means the book was read by a large number of the populace. It was also disseminated by Voltaire himself to some of his colleagues and other members of the upper class the circle of people and the portion of society that the text was specifically intended for. The author 1762-1851 was the daughter of Thomas Townley Dawson she married first James Tisdall and then in 1798 Charles William Bury first Earl of Charleville. She was an invalid for many years. privately printed by Catherine Maria Bury, Countess of Charleville unknown books‎

‎La Pucelle d'Orleans. Suivie du Temple du Gout &c.‎

‎Geneva: Cramer et Bardin 1775. Edition encadré" volume 11. Volume 11 only of the 40-volume "edition encadré" published in 1775 by Cramer et Bardin the last edition of Voltaire's works published under the author's supervision. Then as now La Pucelle d'Orleans was Voltaire's most consumed work so it is not surprising to find this volume detached from the its 39 companions. Voltaire's greatest poem but not the one you read in school. With Ariosto in mind Voltaire rewrote the Joan of Arc story with all the wit and critical distance of an 18th-century libertine. The result is that France's sainted woman warrior becomes the vehicle for an intelligent and licentious burlesque. Good and right-thinking people have always found it offensive but it doesn't really care. Nice binding charming illustrations. Octavo 21 cm; 420 pages portrait frontispiece by Martinet and 21 engraved plates. Text within typographic borders. Bound in contemporary etched leather scored in gilt. Spine decorated in gilt with leather labels. Marbled endpapers. Boards somewhjat splayed. Negligible loss at head and tail. Hinges starting. Upper joint reinforced. Contents clean. "Candide ou l'Optimisme /kndid/ kon-DEED5 French: kdid About this soundlisten is a French satire first published in 1759 by Voltaire a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment.6 The novella has been widely translated with English versions titled Candide: or All for the Best 1759; Candide: or The Optimist 1762; and Candide: Optimism 1947.7 It begins with a young man Candide who is living a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise and being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism by his mentor Professor Pangloss.8 The work describes the abrupt cessation of this lifestyle followed by Candide's slow and painful disillusionment as he witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world. Voltaire concludes Candide with if not rejecting Leibnizian optimism outright advocating a deeply practical precept "we must cultivate our garden" in lieu of the Leibnizian mantra of Pangloss "all is for the best" in the "best of all possible worlds". Candide is characterized by its tone as well as by its erratic fantastical and fast-moving plot. A picaresque novel with a story similar to that of a more serious coming-of-age narrative Bildungsroman it parodies many adventure and romance clich The Franklin Library hardcover books‎

Bookplates of William Paul to front pastedown of each; ownership stamp of Robert Paul to front endpapers and title of volume II. Small closed tear to margin of pages v-vi and paper loss to margin of pages 3-4 of volume I neither affecting text. Collating complete: viii 356; 258.68 20. A pleasing set of this important French history.

In the Introduction Voltaire declares that his aim is greater than merely writing the life of Louis XIV: "We would endeavour to describe to posterity not the actions only of one man but the genius of the age; that age which was the most enlightened of all others." Greater than the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome and that period "which followed the taking of Constantinople by Mahomet II" the age of Louis XIV comes the closest according to Voltaire to reaching perfection. He lays out his claims in two volumes celebrating the richness of Enlightenment thought in this grandiose history. George Faulkner unknown books‎

Etching at p.54 with loss in the lower corner not affecting the image paper somewhat toned at edges and occasional small tears to some sheets but copy is in near fine condition paper supple. Half cloth binding with marbled boards; gilt title on spine slightly rubbed some bumping and wear at corners and edges 2-inch crack to top of front hinge but binding tight and square.
All for the Best. This edition enriched by Clara Tice's racy and whimsical illustrations is an "Exact reprint of the earliest English text" and was printed in Holland by the Johann Enschedé en Zonen of Haarlem founded in 1703. The verso of the title page states it was "set entirely by hand from type cast by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen from original Didot matrices." It bears amusing legends on the tissue guards printed in red: "Their hands strayed"; "Cut off only one of the buttocks"; "Their veils dropt".

Clara Tice 1888 - 1973 drew racy illustrations at a time when ladies did not engage in such things and when Anthony Comstock's Society for the Suppression of Vice was very active. Tice attracted their unwanted attention for one of her early exhibitions at Polly's Restaurant in Greenwich Village in 1915 and it helped to jump-start her career. Vanity Fair dubbed Tice the "QUEEN OF GREENWICH VILLAGE". According to The New York Times 27 June 1920 she was the first woman in Greenwich village to bob her hair. Tice also created a cartoon strip and posters and she is included in the New York Dada Movement. J. Enschedé en Zonen for the Bennett Libraries Inc unknown‎
