Al centro dei piatti fregio in oro raffigurante un Caduceo, antico simbolo composto da un'asta alata con due serpenti avvolti attorno ad essa, rappresentazione fisica del bene e del male degli uomini, tenute in equilibrio dalla bacchetta del dio Ermes. Dentelle interna e sguardie in seta verde. Tagli dorati. Brossura editoriale muta conservata all'interno, alla prima carta bianca ex libris manoscritto 'Jacobi Silbuth, 1848 ....' Esemplare su carta forte ad ampi margini in prima tiratura con l'indirizzo di 'Clarke, New Bond Street' anziché ' Mount Street'. Prima edizione in lingua francese pubblicata a Londra. Beckford scrisse Vathek in francese nel 1782, completando la prima bozza in "tre giorni e due notti" in gennaio, A maggio il romanzo era finito. Beckford incoraggiò prima il suo tutore John Lettice e poi il suo amico, il reverendo Samuel Henley, a preparare una versione in inglese, ma ne proibì espressamente la pubblicazione prima della pubblicazione del testo francese. Henley inviò comunque la sua traduzione alla stampa nel 1786 lasciando intendere che Vathek era stato tradotto da una fonte araba, senza menzionare l'autore. Beckford, che era a Losanna, era furioso. Egli "si vendicò come meglio poté", pubblicando frettolosamente l'originale francese "da un manoscritto che doveva avere con sé, in uno stato leggermente precedente a quello tradotto da Henley" (Roger Lonsdale, citando gli studi testuali del professor André Parreaux, che smentì la vecchia teoria secondo cui l'edizione di Losanna sarebbe stata ritradotta dall'inglese). La stampa di Losanna riflette la sua rabbia immediata; l'edizione parigina fornisce un testo più ponderato. Nonostante il continuo interesse per il romanzo in francese, Beckford non produsse personalmente alcuna versione inglese, sebbene alla fine acconsentì ad apportare alcune correzioni alla terza edizione della traduzione di Henley. Tutte le edizioni di Vathek in cui Beckford fu direttamente coinvolto sono testualmente importanti, e le prime due in francese sono 'extrêmement rares', come scrive nelle nota Beckford in questa edizione francese riveduta del 1815. L'opera su svolge come romanzo gotico-orientale, si ispira alle Mille e una notte e alla tradizione orientalista, ma anche alla filosofia illuminista e alla critica religiosa. Vathek è il racconto di una discesa agli inferi, di una ricerca ossessiva del sapere e del potere, di una sfida al divino e al destino. Il romanzo è ricco di immagini fantastiche, di scene horror, di ironia e di erotismo. Vathek è considerato un precursore del genere fantastico e un capolavoro del Romanticismo e della letteratura gotica.
