‎Sehr gutes Exemplar - Herman Melville und Nathaniel Hawthorne hatten sich 1850 bei einem Picknick in den Berkshire Mountains kennengelernt. Der lebhafte Gedankenaustausch, der daraufhin begann, hatte unmittelbar Einfluß auf Melvilles Roman Moby-Dick. In ?Bewunderung für seinen Genius" widmete Melville seinem Freund das Buch. Die drei Briefe aus dem Jahr 1851 zeugen von diesem Einfluß. Einen gleichermaßen faszinierenden Einblick in die Werkstatt Melvilles geben die Briefe aus dem Jahr 1852. Melville versucht in ihnen, Hawthorne einen Stoff anzutragen, den ihm ein Rechtsanwalt berichtet hatte. Nachdem Hawthorne das Material nicht verwenden will, schreibt Melville die Geschichte selbst.
